Most people farmed, and boys and girls were expected to help with the chores. As children grew, they learned more skills. For example, boys were taught to fight with weapons, and girls learned to spin wool and make clothes. This training prepared young people for their roles in adulthood. Ivar was also learning to be a blacksmith. As soon as he was done with his chores, he had to run to the village blacksmith’s shop to help make some iron tools. Vocabulary When Ivar had any free time, he spent it blacksmith, n. a type with other boys, learning how to hunt and of craftsperson who fish and ride horses. Music and board games makes iron tools by hand were also popular among both boys and girls. Viking childhood did not last long, though! Young people had to take on adult roles as soon as they could. In addition to his work at home, Ivar was learning how to be a blacksmith. 4 A Viking boy might look forward to one day getting his own sword. Today the blacksmith was pleased that Ivar had kept his promise to stop daydreaming when they had work to do. Yesterday, Ivar’s mind had wandered. He had accidentally knocked over a large water bucket. As a result, the blacksmith had become very angry—and very wet. Ivar hoped that the blacksmith would make a sword for him, but he did not ask about it today. Ivar thought he would wait a few days. He wanted to give the blacksmith a chance to forget about what had happened with the water bucket. Viking Raiders As he worked, Ivar thought about his Vocabulary father, Tor. Ivar’s father was a Viking jarl jarl, n. a Viking chief (/yahr*ul/), or chief. He had been away from home for many months, leading a long voyage at sea. 5 A Viking raid was a terrifying event. Tor the Jarl and his men had taken a voyage to plunder towns, villages, and churches near seacoasts and along rivers. The Vikings raided these places with their swift longships. They stole treasure, burned buildings, and took captives. The Vikings demanded that the families or friends of the captives pay a ransom. If they refused, the Vikings forced the captured people into slavery. The Vikings killed anyone who tried to stop them. Everyone feared the Viking raiders. Ivar ran fast down the pathway that led across the steep wall of the fjord to the beach. He hoped to surprise his father. Ivar had grown while his father was gone.

They plundered extensively in the British Isles and France and even attacked as far south as Spain, Portugal and North Africa. In the ninth century they gained control of Orkney, Shetland and most of the Hebrides, conquered a large part of England and established bases on the Irish coast from which they launched attacks within Ireland and across the Irish Sea. Men and women from west Scandinavia emigrated to settle, not only in the parts of the British Isles that were then under Scandinavian control, but also in the Faeroes and Iceland, which had previously been uninhabited. In the last years of the tenth century they also began to colonize Greenland, and explored North America, but without establishing a permanent settlement there. The Scandinavian assault on Western Europe culminated in the early eleventh century with the Danish conquest of the English kingdom, an achievement that other Scandinavian kings attempted to repeat later in the century, but without success.

Draken Harald Hårfagre reawakened in many Scandinavian-Americans the Viking spirit in their blood and in- spired them to find out more about their heritage. Louise Adie, an Antarctic kayak guide with strong Norwegian roots, made five visits to Draken this summer and even discovered a long-lost cousin on the crew.     Viking Travel Information Sheet (Reading activity) Viking Longships Design and Create a Viking Longship Vikings were excellent boat builders as well as first class sailors, navigating by watching the movement of the sun and observing landmarks and seabirds. We know what their ships looked like because many Vikings were buried with their worldly goods, and sometimes this included their boat. The Gokstad ship was unearthed in a burial site south of Oslo and is now in a museum. Tree-ring dating has shown that this ship was built towards the end of the ninth century. It is 23 metres long and made of curving, overlapping oak planks (clinker built) that would skim the waves. Viking ships were like large open rowing boats and could be up to 28m long and 4.5m wide, which is why they are often called ‘longships’. Longships were fast and easy to row. Because they were narrow they cut through the water easily (like racing yachts), and because they were long the bow wave was well ahead of the stern wave, which made high speeds possible. They would, generally, carry about 60 men, who took it in turns with the 30 oars. The mast was easy to put up and down if they needed to use the sail. Because of the shape of the ship they could not carry much sail so they had to sail when the winds were at their best. In Spring, the easterly winds helped them sail to Britain, Iceland, Greenland and America. Westerly Autumn winds carried them back to Norway and Denmark.

    1 Representations of Christ in Christian Skaldic Poetry Ruth Elizabeth Cheadle UCL PhD 2 I, Ruth Elizabeth Cheadle, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 3 Abstract This thesis aims to demonstrate that, through use of literary genre, vocabulary, and emphasis of detail, the authors of Christian skaldic verse in the twelfth to fifteenth centuries continually reshaped a specific set of representations for Christ to suit each poem’s individual purpose, its audience, and the literary tastes of the periods in which they were written. In order to show how Christ’s portrayal changes over time and according to each poem’s overarching purpose, I have selected the following five Christian skaldic poems and made each the focus of a chapter: Einarr Skúlason’s Geisli, Gamli kanóki’s Harmsól, and the anonymously-composed poems Leiðarvísan, Líknarbraut, and Lilja. Within each chapter I provide an overview of the poem, selecting stanzas that highlight features of Christ that are prevalent or striking in some way, and analyse how these representations not only influence the poem itself, but also shape perceptions of Christ’s relationship with humanity. Each chapter leads to an overall consideration both of the image of Christ as this has been represented, and of the degree to which this has been influenced by biblical and patristic writings, Old Norse literature and culture, or by a combination of these elements. In the concluding chapter I identify the prevailing representations of Christ throughout these five poems, dividing these characterisations into five categories: Christ as Warrior Chieftain, as Healer and Abundant Nourisher, as Legal Authority, as Beguiler, and as Light.

Because we have so much subject matter to consider in this lesson, I will get right into the substance of the things we need to cover. WALKING STEP BY STEP THROUGH ISRAEL’S SOJOURN IN EGYPT FROM JOSEPH UNTIL JOSHUA In the last lesson we learned two new Egyptian terms which were inscribed on various obelisks. These terms were “ benben ” and the “ Ashet tree.” If you will recall, I promised I would cover these terms in more detail in this lesson. What is interesting is that the term “ ben ” is common in Egyptian, Hebrew and Old English. In The American Heritage Dictionary there are three meanings as follows: “ ben1 ... n. Scottish. The inner room or parlor of a house. — adv. Scottish. Inside; within. — prep. Scottish. Within. [Middle English ben, binne(n), Old English binnan: be, By + innan, within (see en in Appendix).] “ ben2 ... n. Scottish. A mountain peak. Used in names of mountains: Ben Nevis. [Scottish Gaelic beann, peak, height. See bend- in appendix.] “ ben3 ... n. Any of several Asiatic trees of the genus Moringa, bearing winged seeds that yield an oil used in perfumes and cosmetics. [Dialectal Arabic ben, from Arabic ban.] ” The last definition, #3, seems to fit the description of an “ ash tree ”, for an “ ash tree ” produces “ winged seeds.” If this is true, there may be a direct connection between the words “ ben ” and “ ash.” You can see from all three definitions that the term “ ben ” seems to be universal in Egyptian, Hebrew and Old English, giving evidence of a common source.

The director, Richard Fleischer, wanted the utmost authenticity, so he filmed the action in the fjords of Norway. One of the intriguing aspects of the film’s visuals was the rolling credits at the beginning and end of the movie for which the Bayeux Tapestry served as the basis.     Chapter 2 Section 1: Europeans Set Sail Viking Sailors Reach North America The Vikings were the first Europeans to make contact with North America. They came ​ ​ from Scandinavia, a peninsula that includes the present­day countries of Denmark, ​ ​ Norway, and Sweden. The Vikings were skilled sailors who developed a new style of ship, called the longship, that curved up at both ends. Viking vessels traveled the rough North Atlantic seas better than earlier Ships because their designs were more stable. The Vikings raided countries throughout Europe, but they also developed large trading networks. Viking ships sailed to the British Isles and the Mediterranean and Black seas. Eventually, the Vikings sailed west into the North Atlantic. There they founded a settlement on the Island of Iceland in about 874. More than 100 years later, Viking Erik ​ ​ ​ the Red left Iceland to settle Greenland. ​ Leif Eriksson, the son of Erik the Red, shared his father's love of adventure. In the ​ year 1000, he was sailing from west Norway to Greenland when strong winds blew his ship off course and carried his ship all the way to the North American coast. Eriksson and his crew landed on the Labrador Peninsula in present­day Canada. The Vikings then sailed further south to the island of Newfoundland, and perhaps to what is now New England. According to their myths, Vikings saw forests, meadows, and rivers ​ ​ that held "larger salmon then they had ever seen." Eriksson settled in a coastal area he called Vinland, but the Vikings left after only a few years. Attacks by Native Americans posed a constant threat, and the area may have been too far from other Viking settlements to be supported.
