The school was founded and continues to be run by the Tamworth Christian Education Association, an initiative of Trinity Church Tamworth. The school is one of the ministries of the church, in partnership with parents and other school supporters. In August 1999, Carinya Christian School Gunnedah was officially recognised as a Carinya Christian School campus. The Tamworth Christian Education Association saw an opportunity in 1998 to support the ongoing provision of Christian Education to the Gunnedah community by assuming the management of what was previously Gunnedah Christian Community School, at the beginning of 1999. It was humble beginnings for Carinya Gunnedah with just two classes, less than 20 students from Kindergarten to Year 6 and two full-time teachers. Now, nearly twenty years later, Carinya Gunnedah has 56 students in the Kindergarten Preparatory Program and 100 students in Kindergarten to Year 6, with 7 full-time teachers, 4 casual and part time teachers and 8 permanent support staff. Carinya Dist inct ives 1. The Rew ard is in t he Task Teaching children to ?seek the reward in the task? treats them with dignity and respect as learners, and shows that they are capable of valuing learning for its own sake. They do not have to be ?bribed? to learn, with prizes and public praise. In ?education speak?, that means we seek to motivate children ?intrinsically?. 4 2. Creat ed in God's Im age a. Every child m at t ers Every child matters because they are an individual, personally made by God, and each child's importance as a person is given by the Creator. It is not earned or lost! It is intrinsic to each person. b. Creat ed in t he im age of God To be ?created in the image of God? means each child is created by God with qualities which God Himself has, including purpose, intelligence, creativity, understanding, compassion and insight. c. Every child is an individual God gives His ?image? differently and uniquely to each child we teach, therefore the individuality of every child is prized, nurtured and encouraged in how teachers approach the task of teaching. 3. Charact er over Personalit y The Bible teaches us that through perseverance comes character. When children persevere, it changes failure into a success. Perseverance is critical to producing the intrinsic motivation that is required for children to see the value of learning in itself. Through perseverance, greater life skills are gained and real learning can take place. Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. Romans 5:3-4 4. Hom e and School Toget her One of our school sayings is ?Home and School Together?. This means that Carinya staff and parents work together in partnership to achieve the same goals and objectives for their respective children. Sharing with parents in the education of their children is rightly seen as a privilege for all staff, and one which we take very seriously. We work hard at communicating with parents, so that home and school work together to have the greatest impact on children under our care. Schools function best when the community has mutually supportive relationships. Parents are encouraged to keep in close touch with the school and never hesitate to speak with staff about their child. 4 5 5. Christ , Com m unit y, Discovery - Christ : Jesus is the core reason that Carinya exists. He provides the vision and purpose for our approach to educating children at every level in the school. This means all teaching and learning is based around our understanding of who Christ is and how we seek to bring him glory. - Com m unit y: At Carinya we enjoy a rich and diverse community where we see all children as being precious, as they are made by God, in his image. This means students are not discriminated by their ability, rather they are encouraged to use their gifts to the best of their ability. All students learn and relate differently and it is through these differences that opportunities to learn and grow are provided. - Discovery: Through Jesus, an amazing and complex world was created. Our Christian staff delight in helping students discover God?s world and how we can live and serve in it. 6 The Building Program Stephen Carter, Business Manager The Decision t o Expand In 2016 enrolments began to grow in the Kindergarten to Year 6 school. To provide options for the future accommodation of students, a decision was made in September 2016 to purchase 97 and 101 Little Barber Street, Gunnedah. The existing structures on these premises where demolished thereafter. In 2017 the Board of the Association began to consider a facilities Master Plan for the Gunnedah School, which included expanding to Secondary schooling. As a result of this process the following was summarised and concluded. Gunnedah Populat ion and Econom y The Gunnedah population has increased over the past decade and community sentiment and government projections indicate that population is likely to remain stable or continue to grow. Whilst the Gunnedah economy has historically been subject to boom and bust cycles, efforts by the Gunnedah Shire Council and Gunnedah Chamber of Commerce to improve infrastructure and promote the region serve to diversify and protect the local economy and reduce the economic risk. Based upon a survey of the parent body, families were generally very positive with regard to the future of Gunnedah. Gunnedah Enrolm ent s: Prim ary Schooling An analysis of future enrolments through to 2024 indicated that growth was likely and would create significant capacity constraints. Projections indicated that by 2020 the existing classrooms would not accommodate Kindergarten to Year 6 students. At the very least construction of further classrooms was required on the adjacent Little Barber Street site prior to 2020. 6 7 Expanding To Secondary Schooling The data analysed indicated that an increasing number of graduating primary students were sourcing secondary education outside of Gunnedah. Providing a quality secondary school option would serve the Gunnedah community. In addition, the parent survey indicated that if Years 7 to 10 were offered in Gunnedah, the vast majority (94%) of primary students would continue at the school. This provided confidence that an expansion to Secondary Schooling was the correct decision. Financial Viabilit y A variety of enrolment scenarios were considered with all indicating that operating a Secondary School would be viable and provide an overall benefit to the association given a stable economic and funding climate. Future funding projections, announced as part of Gonski 2.0, were supportive of the Gunnedah School. This funding makes it possible to operate the Gunnedah School with a low annual fee. Forecasts were based upon the fees below, subject to change pending elective options and excursion program offered. Year Annual Fee $ IT Levy $ Tot al 6 2,900 120 3,020 7 3,380 120 3,500 8 3,380 120 3,500 9 4,060 300 4,360 10 4,060 300 4,360 Decision t o Expand In light of these considerations the Board resolved at the March 2017 meeting to expand Carinya Gunnedah to Years 7 to 10 pending support from the Block Grant Authority. In October 2017 the Association was successful in its application to the Commonwealth Government Block Grant Authority for support toward the Stage 1 Development. In November 2017 the process to expand Carinya Gunnedah to Years 7 to 10 was initiated by the Board on the following basis: 8 - Stage 1 to commence with Year 7 in 2019 and Year 8 in 2020 - Stage 2 to continue with Year 9 in 2021 and Year 10 in 2022 This decision also addressed the pending capacity constraints for K to 6 in the existing buildings.
