The unbearable face of human being cannot be hidden and what a director shot in a film may reveal the real sense of what is hidden from our eyes. Thus directors sometimes try to hide their dark side behind such interesting movies after having modified the events of the original text to achieve their end. This paper, however, is an overview about the technique of adaptation which varies from one adaptationist to another depending on the historical background of the screenplay writer. Prof. (English) KG Arts & Science College Raigarh, Chhatisgarh India Abstract Thanks to our drama professor who initiated us to the sheer joy of reading the high flown language and acting in Shakespeare‟s plays that eventually left us spellbound for life. Watching Shakespeare‟s plays in theatre for the yester year English educated Indians has been a hobby. This infatuation with the greatest dramatist has led some Film directors to experiment on the themes of comedies and tragedies. In recent years, director Vishal Bhardwaj holds the credit of adapting themes of his great tragedies to contemporary situation and work wonder through his experimentation. Maqbool is a 2003 Indian crime drama, an adaptation of the play Macbeth. The film had its North American premiere at the 2003 Toronto International Film Festival and was screened in the Marché du Film section of the 2004 Cannes Film Festival. Bhardwaj then moved on to adapt Othello in his 2006 film Omkara which won him commercial as well as critical success and Francis Ford Coppola's attention. Haider is the third installment of Bhardwaj's Shakespearean trilogy. The film is a modern-day adaptation of William Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet, set amidst the insurgency-hit Kashmir during conflicts of 1995 and civilian disappearances. The film was screened at the 19th Busan International Film Festival and released worldwide on 2 October 2014 to wide critical acclaim, and garnered attention from the media due to its controversial subject matter. The present paper intends to study how the movies inspired by Shakespeare still appeal 21st century audience to concur his universality in changing times.

This paper studies the representation of Kashmir and its civilian population in popular Hindi films. As Bollywood has an immensely dedicated audience, both in India as well as globally, the sensitive issues surrounding Kashmir make for extremely sought-after and therefore potentially influential content in films. I argue that these films reflect a sharp bias and a myopic approach towards showcasing the area and its civilian population. This paper employs the use of film analysis and critical discourse analysis to examine seven films — Mission Kashmir (2000), Yahaan (2005),Fanaa (2006), I am (2010), Lamhaa (2010), Haider (2014) and Hamid (2018) — to support the argument. The results show that all the films except Haider and Hamid misrepresent or underrepresent the realities of Kashmir.

    "Light Your Cigarette with My Heart's Fire, My Love": Raunchy Dances and a Golden- hearted Prostitute in Bhardwaj's Omkara (2006) Madhavi Biswas, University of Texas Dallas Abstract This essay argues that Omkara (dir. Vishal Bhardwaj, 2006) foregrounds contemporary gender concerns in modern, small-town India, primarily through the film's reformulation of the three female roles in Othello. Billo/Bianca, played by a glamorous, contemporary, female star, gets her own romance and two popular and raunchy song-and-dance tracks in Omkara. These dance tracks are a peculiar mixture of traditional folk Nautanki and identifiable Bollywood masala "item numbers," whose layered lyrics have been penned by Gulzar, a well-known poet, lyricist, scriptwriter, and ex-film-director who closely collaborates with Bhardwaj. The essay argues for the recognition of the songs in Omkara as a parallel narrative that intertwines with and intersects the central narrative of the plot, inflecting it with a range of cultural and social intertexts, along with a dash of metatextual flavor. The article examines how the two song-and-dance sequences by Billo/Bianca in the film use the familiar tropes of the "courtesan" figure of Hindi films and draw upon traditional folk-theater — reflecting both its local poetry and its vulgarity — to evoke a new kind of verbal and visual "realism" that intertwines Bollywood glamor with local histories. Omkara, with its big budget stars, glossy production values, and popular song- and-dance numbers interspersing the narrative — elements that are often associated with the "Bollywood" style of Hindi cinema — is the most obviously commercial of Vishal Bhardwaj's three Shakespearean adaptations.

    HAIDER WINS PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD AT THE ROME FILM FESTIVAL The film had an Italian Premiere on 24th October and is the first Indian Film to get this award Mumbai, 25th October: Haider produced by UTV Motion Pictures and VB Pictures which had its Italian premiere at the prestigious Rome Film Festival on 24th October, won the ‘People’s Choice Award’ in the Mondo Genre (World Genre) announced today. Out of the 7 films that featured under this genre, Haider was the only Asian film selected across the globe. This is the first time that an Indian film wins the Audience Award in a non- specialized (non-focused on Asian Cinema) wide-ranging International festival. After winning hearts across India, the movie continues to woo audiences across the globe. Winning the ‘People’s Choice Award’ is truly prestigious as it’s one of the most unbiased awards since its chosen by the audiences and Haider was clearly the choice of the people. This is a huge honour for the Film as well as the country. The Mondo Genre had a selection of feature films of young or already successful directors this year and the festival gave priority to films that are world premieres. The movies selected were from countries like Italy, USA, Brazil and France. Along with Haider other films selected at the festival included films like Gone Girl by David Fincher starring Ben Affleck, The Knick by Steven Soderbergh starring Clive Owen, Black and White by Mike, Binder starting Kevin Costner, Still Alice by Richard Glatzer starring Julianne Moore, Kristen Stewart and Alec Baldwin, Night Crawler by Dan Gilroy starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Jia Zhangke, UN Gars De Fenyang by Walter Salles,Time Out of Mine by Oren Moverman starring Richard Gere and movies starring Johnny Depp, Stonehearst Asylum by Richard Anderson starring Kate Beckinsale and Ben Kingsley among several others.

    nos 008 Vishal Bhardwaj the sportsman who turned music composer to woo his collegemate In his own words I did BA Pass, which we used to call the ‘royal course’ at that time. Students from sports quota, aspiring artists, basically those who didn’t want to study, opted for it ! . I had come from Meerut, and being from a small town, college was a totally new world for me. I met so many musicians and learned music here. I’d have never become a composer or a filmmaker had I not studied here. College also brought newfound freedom. But to the aspirants, I want to say that this freedom and liberty come with responsibilities. And hey outstation students, don’t ever feel like a misfit. Always remember that it is the people from outside who make it big. Even in films, people who’ve come from outside Bombay have done better. I came from a small town, but never felt lonely because I stayed in the college hostel and everyone immediately became family, including the hostel staff. I remember living on bun-anda, roaming around till 4 in the morning . Unlike most guys, we never hung out around Miranda House, because the girls in our college were so pretty. Rekha (wife, singer Rekha Bhardwaj) was my senior and just to woo her, I became a composer. But, she was not the first one I tried to woo.
