PROVENANCE The General Administration Collection of the University Archives is drawn primarily from the records of Office of the Secretary, Office of the Provost and Office of the Treasurer as well as those of the deans of the college and medical school. The majority of the records were held by the Secretary and Treasurer of the University and turned over the University Archives when it was created in 1945. The University Library also had a number of early manuscript records in its collections which were turned over to the Archives in the 1950s and 1960s and to this were added the historical collection of the Dean of the School of Medicine in the 1950s. In addition to these sources a number of individual documents and groups of documents found in this collection were donated or acquired by the University. The provenance of this latter group is often noted on the original document or the document abstract. Beginning in the 1950s all the pre-1820 documents were pulled together into one single collection that it is found today. ARRANGEMENT NOTE The General Administration Collection (also known as Archives General Collection) Pre-1820 is organized into twenty-two series: Communications of Individuals, Constitution and Charter - 1 - General Administration Collection Pre-1820 UPA 3 Pre-1820 Collection, Trustees, Faculty of Arts, Students of Arts, Faculty of Medicine, Students of Medicine, Financial Records, Matriculation and Class Records, Matriculation Lecture Tickets, Curriculum Collection, Commencement Collection, Diploma and Certification Collection, Non- University Organizations, Printed Pieces, Typescripts of Other Documents, Photocopies of Other Documents, Microfilm, Iconographic Collection, Architectural Drawings and Plans, Memorabilia, Personal Papers. All series and subseries are arranged chronologically except for those titled “Communication” which are arranged alphabetically. SCOPE AND CONTENTS The General Administration Collection pre-1820 documents the institutional and education activities of the University of Pennsylvania from its founding to 1820 with some earlier material included. The Collection was created primarily from records of the Provost, Secretary, Treasurer and Deans of the Universitiy of Pennsylvania. The collection is primarily composed of correspondence and reports of various University officers. Since the collection was drawn in large part from the Office of the Secretary records, it contains much of the supporting documentation relating to the University's Board of Trustees and related committees documenting decisions and studies conducted. The correspondence of the deans of the college and medical school covers similar subject matters as well as matters relating to students. Most of the correspondence and reports date from the 1790s to 1810s after the reorganization of the University of Pennsylvania in 1790. A sizable amount of the correspodence relates to matters regarding the School of Medicine. Some student correspondence and petitions are present. Documentation, such as contracts and bills and invoices, for University expenses and building projects and repairs also is present. There is a complete set of account books for the University going back to 1749. Student records for the College and Academy as well as lists for the School of Medicine date back to the 1760s.
