Meeting Superman the Return of Superman: The Return of Superman, Superman discovers the landmass is filled with Kryptonite, which weakens him to the point that Luthor and his henchmen are able to beat him. Superman is stabbed by Luthor with a shard of Kryptonite and falls into the ocean. Lois makes Richard turn back to rescue Superman, whereupon she removes the Kryptonite from his back. Superman, after regaining his strength from the sun, lifts the landmass after putting layers of earth between him and the Kryptonite. Luthor and Kitty escape in their helicopter; Kitty, unwilling to let billions of people die, tosses away the crystals that Lex stole from the Fortress of Solitude. She and Luthor are stranded on a desert island when their helicopter runs out of fuel. Superman pushes the landmass into space with the crystals trapped on the landmass, but is weakened by the Kryptonite and crashes back to Earth. Doctors remove more Kryptonite from Superman's wound, but after it is removed they cannot penetrate his skin with their surgical tools. While Superman remains in a coma, Lois and Jason visit him at the hospital where Lois whispers a secret into Superman's ear and then kisses him. Superman later awakens and flies to visit Jason, reciting his father Jor-El's last speech to Jason as he sleeps.

Ehrlich Professor Department of Journalism University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Urbana, IL [email protected] Superman is an icon of American popular culture—variously described as being “better known than the president of the United States [and] more familiar to school children than Abraham Lincoln,” a “triumphant mixture of marketing and imagination, familiar all around the world and re-created for generation after generation,” an “ideal, a hope and a dream, the fantasy of millions,” and a symbol of “our universal longing for perfection, for wisdom and power used in service of the human race.”1 As such, the character offers “clues to hopes and tensions within the current American consciousness,” including the “tensions between our mythic values and the requirements of a democratic society.”2 This paper uses Superman as a way of thinking about journalism, following the tradition of cultural and critical studies that uses media artifacts as tools “to size up the shape, character, and direction of society itself.”3 Superman’s alter ego Clark Kent is of course a reporter for a daily newspaper (and at times for TV news as well), and many of his closest friends and colleagues are also journalists. However, although many scholars have analyzed the Superman mythology, not so many have systematically analyzed what it might say about the real-world press. The paper draws upon Superman’s multiple incarnations over the years in comics, radio, movies, and television in the context of past research and criticism regarding the popular culture phenomenon.

The hero's journey, a recurring cycle of events in mythology, is described by Joseph Campbell. Dr. Sunny Ahn Early in the movie “Superman Returns,” Jor-El tells his son, “Even though you’ve been raised as a human being you’re not one of them. They can be a great people, Kal-El. They wish to be. They only lack the light to show the way. For this reason above all, I have sent them you, my only son.” Of all the different superheroes, Superman is a real evident type of Christ. Sent to earth by his father, only son, to be a Light to show the Way? That’s just like Jesus! The question we have before us today is: “Is there a real life superhero?” To this, I would say, it depends on the context where we are. Please hear the names I will call out and see what these bring you in your mind. Hitler, Caeser, Kim Jung-un, Trump, Hilary Clinton, Obama…when you hear these names what comes to your mind? Please keep the answer to yourself. Let me try other names: Gandhi, Mother Theresa, Jesus…what comes to your mind? The people in the first group are named in the context of “kingdom” and the second ones are in the “kin-dom.” When we talk about “Superheroes,” we usually think of them in the context of “kingdom”—political ruling. The kingdom terminology we use in the Bible is a radical political statement against the ruling of the world.
