Market Achievements History Product Market The Komedija theatre fosters a musical and drama repertoire, mostly musicals, rock operas, operettas and of course comedies. As a theatre with a long and rich tradition, the Komedija has throughout the years attracted a large and loyal audience that has been conveying from generation to generation the habit of attending performances at the Komedija theatre. Although it is often said that the Komedija is the most ”Zagrebian“ of all theatres, its audience comes from all over Croatia, as well as from abroad, no matter whether the Komedija is performing somewhere else than at its home address on Kaptol or hosting a performance at its premises in Zagreb attracting people from various parts of Croatia. Due to its peculiar and original repertoire, the Komedija has as the symbol of the Croatian theatre culture often been presented in all promotional activities of the Zagreb Tourist Board as well as at all tourist fairs where the Tourist Boards takes part. The Komedija is the mother of the most famous Croatian musicals, operettas and comedies. It is also renowned for its caring and dignified hosting of the world's most famous plays thanks to its brilliant ensemble. Achievements Promotion and fostering of Croatian and foreign musicals is considered to be one of the greatest achievements of the Komedija theatre and it may be claimed that this form of theatre expression had not existed before the Komedija introduced it on this area. From the numerous excellent plays that have been staged at the Komedija in the last 60 years it is difficult to point out only some of theme, but we will refer to those we are most proud of, like the musical “Yalta, Yalta” (Alfi Kabiljo and Milan Grgić), then the rock opera “Gubec-Beg” (Ivica Krajač, Karlo Metikoš and Miljenko Prohaska) as holding the record of these distinctions are the following : the “Vladimir employees, including theatre workshops and technical audience attendance (performed in Russia!) and a Nazor Award”, the “City of Zagreb Award” and the and general services). number of productions of Mala Floramye (Little “Josip Slavenski“ award. • Authenticity in Electronic Dance Music in Serbia at the Turn of the Centuries
The Other by Itself: Authenticity in electronic dance music in Serbia at the turn of the centuries Inaugural dissertation submitted to attain the academic degree of Dr phil., to Department 07 – History and Cultural Studies at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz Irina Maksimović Belgrade Mainz 2016 Supervisor: Co-supervisor: Date of oral examination: May 10th 2017 Abstract Electronic dance music (shortly EDM) in Serbia was an authentic phenomenon of popular culture whose development went hand in hand with a socio-political situation in the country during the 1990s. After the disintegration of Yugoslavia in 1991 to the moment of the official end of communism in 2000, Serbia was experiencing turbulent situations. On one hand, it was one of the most difficult periods in contemporary history of the country. On the other – it was one of the most original. In that period, EDM officially made its entrance upon the stage of popular culture and began shaping the new scene. My explanation sheds light on the fact that a specific space and a particular time allow the authenticity of transposing a certain phenomenon from one context to another. Transposition of worldwide EDM culture in local environment in Serbia resulted in scene development during the 1990s, interesting DJ tracks and live performances. The other authenticity is the concept that led me to research. This concept is mostly inspired by the book “Death of the Image” by philosopher Milorad Belančić, who says that the image today is moved to the level of new screen and digital spaces. The other authenticity offers another interpretation of a work, or an event, while the criterion by which certain phenomena, based on pre-existing material can be noted is to be different, to stand out by their specificity in a new context.

  • Jewish Communities in the Political and Legal Systems of Post-Yugoslav Countries
TRAMES, 2017, 21(71/66), 3, 251–271 JEWISH COMMUNITIES IN THE POLITICAL AND LEGAL SYSTEMS OF POST-YUGOSLAV COUNTRIES Boris Vukićević University of Montenegro Abstract. After the dissolution of Yugoslavia, the Jewish community within Yugoslavia was also split up, and now various Jewish communities exist in the seven post-Yugoslav countries. Although all of these communities are relatively small, their size, influence, and activity vary. The political and legal status of Jewish communities, normatively speaking, differs across the former Yugoslav republics. Sometimes Jews or Jewish communities are mentioned in constitutions, signed agreements with governments, or are recognized in laws that regulate religious communities. Despite normative differences, they share most of the same problems – a slow process of return of property, diminishing numbers due to emigra- tion and assimilation, and, although on a much lower scale than in many other countries, creeping anti-Semitism. They also share the same opportunities – a push for more minority rights as part of ‘Europeanization’ and the perception of Jewish communities as a link to influential investors and politicians from the Jewish diaspora and Israel. Keywords: Jewish communities, minority rights, post-communism, former Yugoslavia DOI: https://doi.org/10.3176/tr.2017.3.04 1. Introduction In 1948, the first postwar census in Yugoslavia counted 6,538 people of Jewish nationality, although many Jews identified as other nationalities (e.g. Croat, Serb) in the census while identifying religiously as Jewish, as seen by the fact that Jewish municipalities (or communities) across Yugoslavia had 11,934 members (Boeckh 2006:427). The number of Jews in Yugoslavia decreased in the following years after the foundation of the State of Israel.

  • Milko Kelemen: Life and Selected Works for Violoncello
MILKO KELEMEN: LIFE AND SELECTED WORKS FOR VIOLONCELLO by JOSIP PETRAČ (Under the Direction of David Starkweather) ABSTRACT Milko Kelemen (b. 1924) is one of the most extraordinary Croatian composers of the post-World War II era. He has received numerous prestigious awards for his work, while his compositions are published by major companies, including Schott, Universal, Peters, and Hans Sikorski editions. His music is little studied or known internationally. This paper examines this innovative, avant-garde musician and sheds light both on Kelemen’s life and his compositional technique. The latter is examined in four compositions featuring cello as the main subject: Changeant (1968), Drammatico (1983), Requiem for Sarajevo (1994), and Musica Amorosa (2004). The examination of these compositions is placed in a biographical context which reveals how Kelemen’s keen political and cultural interests influenced his development as a composer. In particular, this document looks at Kelemen’s role as one of the founders, and the first president, of the Zagreb Music Biennale Festival, an event known for its ground-breaking work in bringing together artists and composers from the eastern and western blocs during the Cold War, as well as revitalising Croatia’s old-fashioned and provincial cultural scene. This festival of avant-garde music has been running since 1961.

As in all previous competitions, this cultural manifestation is going to tone our town with a rich spectre of colourful human voices for four days. Singing, being one of the most natural forms of artistic expression, has been an inevitable part of cultural heritage of Zadar and its citizens. I am deeply convinced that the joy of singing is being increasingly meliorated through this biennial manifestation and that singing and music are more successfully promoted through all the activities around the Competition. I particularly hope that these efforts will reach the youth! The international character of the Competition exceptionally pleases me. Our singers have the opportunity to meet with singers from all around the world and exchange invaluable experiences, which create genuine, not just momentarily trendy virtual connections. The City of Zadar and Zadar Concert Office, the organiser of the manifestation, are delighted to raise those numerous possibilities of connecting, whose common denominator is music – an art that is woven into the fabric of this town.
