5 A Celebration of Catholic Education

“...in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” 6 6 6 1 Thessalonians 5:18 eucharisteo Every day we have reason to give thanks for the gifts of grace, but November has always been a time for me to really look deeply A Celebration of Catholic Education into the past year with gratitude. No matter what the situation may have been, it is always refreshing to reflect back and see how God’s plan unfolded for the greater good.

I was not a product of Catholic education, but my Mom was, and she instilled in us the same faith values that she received in her parochial school in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The gift of my faith that she helped form is one that grows every year and I am forever thankful. I often look back and think about how blessed I have been, even though I did not attend Catholic school as a student, that I have gotten the opportunity to participate for the last 24 years as a teacher. There are not many people who get to go to work every day and tell their stories about how God works in their life and teach science, too! I count my blessings. I am thankful for all the parents at Blanchet Catholic School that graciously give all of us the opportunity to live out our vocations daily. They have entrusted us with their most precious gift, their children, who constantly inspire us, encourage us and challenge us to be the people God has intended us to be. We are blessed.

This year I am especially grateful for the opportunity to launch a new service club for the middle school called G.O.S.P.E.L. (Go Out Spreading Peace, Encouraging Love). This club will set its efforts on creating a relationship between The Lancaster Village residents and our middle school. We are working on an “Adopt a Grandparent Project,” a Thanksgiving celebration and a Christmas craft project, but our biggest priority is to form lasting relationships for both the residents and our students. We recently won The Schnitzer Spirit of Unity Award. This award is given out by the Wholistic Peace Institute, who has granted us $500 to get our plan up and running. Both the residents and the students are really excited to get started. Again, we are blessed.

As I step back and look at the bigger picture, I am forever reminded that it would not be possible without the love of the Father. The Father that gave us His only Son, that we may have life and have it to the fullest. The Son that gave thanks- eucharisteo. We too, need to follow His example. May this Thanksgiving Day and every day find you truly blessed.

It was a challenging year with the ‘storm of the century’ predicted but True Blue Blanchet fans came to support the school, and we had a wonderful evening of great fellowship on October 15. We were pleased to welcome a new auctioneer, Brad Caldwell with Stokes Auction Group. And our guests were overjoyed with the new catering team from Holy Family Academy who provided a hot and delicious meal for everyone in attendance. While we did not reach our goal to raise $190,000 for the school, we were successful in reaching the matching goal for the fund-a-need item of a bus and new air conditioning in the auxiliary gym. There are so many people to thank: our sponsors, donors, guests, Blanchet staff and faculty, parents and students. We would like to extend a special thank you to the Auction Committee and the hundreds of volunteers and donors who make this event possible. One hundren and forty adults donated over 470 volunteer hours, and 145 students donated over 400 hours to make the event a success. A very big thank you to Blanchet seniors Spencer Schibig, Nick Conway and Joe Pardo who coordinated the student volunteers as their Senior Service project. The auction would not be a success without the generosity of our Blanchet community and we thank you all for supporting Blanchet Catholic School.

This truly was an engaging and educational experience for myself, and I urge all individuals who have the opportunity to partake in such programs to do so. One can learn so much history, as well as grow deeper, and become a changed person through these programs.

Upon my return from the Civil Rights Immersion, I moved to Washington in pursuit of a full-time nursing position. During the interim of obtaining this first nursing position, I was able to work as an administrative assistant at Synrad. The Blanchet staff worked all summer to prepare for the unveiling of a new student information system (RenWeb) and integrated website in August, just before the start of the school year. The primary reason for this change was to provide consolidated and improved functionality for our faculty, staff, students and parents. Not only does the site now have a new and improved look, it also allows for easier browsing and more interactive options, including our new Parent Portal. Parents and students can access schedules, grades, interactive online classrooms, class resources, and homework assignments at any time. The update and conversion over to RenWeb also offers more convenience to facilitate parent/teacher interaction.

We are excited about the opportunities RenWeb offers our faculty, staff, students and parents and will continue to work to make the system more streamlined and user friendly. We also have a new weekly email format. If you would like to receive our weekly email newsletter, please send an email request to [email protected].
