Cox 2018 DEDICATION For Charles and Bené S. Cox, whose unwavering faith in me has always shone through, even in the hardest times. The world is a better place because you both are in it. And for Laura Ingram Ellis: as much as I wanted this dissertation to spring forth from my head fully formed, like Athena from Zeus’s forehead, it did not happen that way. It happened one sentence at a time, some more excruciatingly wrought than others, and you were there for every single sentence. So these sentences I have written especially for you, Laura, with my deepest and most profound gratitude. ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Although it sometimes felt like a solitary process, I wrote this dissertation with the help and support of several different people, all of whom I deeply appreciate. First and foremost on this list is Prof. Charles Hiroshi Garrett, whom I learned so much from and whose patience and wisdom helped shape this project. I am very grateful to committee members Prof. James Borders, Prof. Walter Everett, Prof. -

Recensie: Tina Turner****1/2
Symbol Analysis in the Who Selected Song Lyrics
1 Eralingua: Jurnal Pendidikan Bahasa Asing dan Sastra Vol.3, No.1, Maret 2019 Symbol Analysis in the who Selected Song Lyrics Yan Ardian Subhan1 and Calvin Jonathan Funck2 English Department, Universitas Pamulang, Tangerang Selatan, Banten1,2 E-mail: [email protected] E-ISSN : 2579-4574 P-ISSN : 2549-7359 Abstract. This study focuses on analysing symbols in five song lyrics of The Who. This study aims at finding and analysing the meanings of symbols and the relationship between both points. The design of this study is descriptive qualitative. The data were analysed by using the theory of symbol by Shaw and Frye. The result of this study showed that the symbols in the five song lyrics of The Who are a reflection of the song writer’s feeling and experience of life. It is clear that his life biography of a song writer influences the song lyric he wrote. Keywords: Symbol analysis, Shaw and Frye theory, lyrics, The Who https://ojs.unm.ac.id/eralingua INTRODUCTION Literature is artistic writings as an expression of human feelings, experiences, ideas, spirit or believes. It Reveals Who I Really Am”: New Metaphors, Symbols, and Motifs in Representations of Autism Spectrum Disorders in Popular Culture
“IT REVEALS WHO I REALLY AM”: NEW METAPHORS, SYMBOLS, AND MOTIFS IN REPRESENTATIONS OF AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS IN POPULAR CULTURE By Summer Joy O’Neal A Dissertation Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English Middle Tennessee State University 2013 Dissertation Committee: Dr. Angela Hague, Chair Dr. David Lavery Dr. Robert Petersen Copyright © 2013 Summer Joy O’Neal ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS There simply is not enough thanks to thank my family, my faithful parents, T. Brian and Pamela O’Neal, and my understanding sisters, Auburn and Taffeta, for their lifelong support; without their love, belief in my strengths, patience with my struggles, and encouragement, I would not be in this position today. I am forever grateful to my wonderful director, Dr. Angela Hague, whose commitment to this project went above and beyond what I deserved to expect. To the rest of my committee, Dr. David Lavery and Dr. Robert Petersen, for their seasoned advice and willingness to participate, I am also indebted. Beyond these, I would like to recognize some “unofficial” members of my committee, including Dr. Elyce Helford, Dr. Alicia Broderick, Ari Ne’eman, Chris Foss, and Melanie Yergau, who graciously offered me necessary guidance and insightful advice for this project, particularly in the field of Disability Studies. Yet most of all, Ephesians 3.20-21. iii ABSTRACT Autism has been sensationalized by the media because of the disorder’s purported prevalence: Diagnoses of this condition that was traditionally considered to be quite rare have radically increased in recent years, and an analogous fascination with autism has emerged in the field of popular culture. -

The Working-Class and Post-War Britain in Pete Townshend's
Class, Youth, and Dirty Jobs: the working-class and post-war Britain in Pete Townshend’s Quadrophenia This chapter examines Pete Townshend’s Quadrophenia (1973) and the way in which it depicts continuity and change in the lives of the British working-class in the period that the album documents (1964/5), the political milieu in which it was written (1972/3), and the legacy of the concept that was depicted in the screen version directed by Franc Roddam (1978/9).1 Quadrophenia was recorded and released in a fraught period of industrial militancy in Britain that had not been witnessed since the general strike of 1926.2 The album can be ‘read’ as both a social history of an element of youth culture in the mid-1960s, but also a reflection on contemporary anxieties relating to youth, class, race, and national identity in the period 1972/3.3 Similarly, the cinematic version of Quadrophenia was conceived and directed in 1978/9 in the months prior to and after Margaret Thatcher was swept to power, ushering in a long period of Conservative politics that economically, socially, and culturally reshaped British society.4 Quadrophenia is a significant historical source for ‘reading’ these pivotal years and providing a sense of how musicians and writers were both reflecting and dramatizing a sense of ‘crisis’, ‘continuity’, and ‘change’ in working-class Britain.5 Along with the novels and films of the English ‘new wave’ and contemporary sociological examinations of working-class communities and youth culture, Quadrophenia represents a classic slice of ‘social realism’, social history, and political commentary. -

Goodbye Jimmy Reed
WORDS FILL MY HEAD Rough And Rowdy Ways Lyrics as sung by Bob Dylan on the released album and transcribed by Daniel Mackay. I Contain Multitudes Today and tomorrow and yesterday too The flowers are dyin’ like all things do Follow me close, I’m going to Bally-na-lee I’ll lose my mind if you don’t come with me I fuss with my hair and I fight blood feuds I contain multitudes Got a tell-tale heart like Mr. Poe Got skeletons in the walls of people you know I’ll drink to the truth and to things we said I’ll drink to the man that shares your bed I paint landscapes and I paint nudes I contain multitudes Red Cadillac and a black moustache Rings on my fingers that sparkle and flash Tell me what’s next, what shall we do? Half my soul, baby, belongs to you I rollick and I frolic with all the young dudes I contain multitudes I’m just like Anne Frank, like Indiana Jones And them British bad boys, the Rolling Stones I go right to the edge, I go right to the end I go right where all things lost are made good again I sing the songs of experience like William Blake I have no apologies to make Everything’s flowing all at the same time I live on a boulevard of crime I drive fast cars and I eat fast foods I contain multitudes WORDS FILL MY HEAD – Rough And Rowdy Ways Pink pedal pushers, red blue jeans All the pretty maids and all the old queens All the old creeds from all my past lives I carry four pistols and two large knives I’m a man of contradictions, I’m a man of many moods I contain multitudes You greedy old wolf, I’ll show you my heart But not all of
