Recensie: Tina Turner****1/2 Sportpaleis Merksem donderdag 22 januari 2009 foto © Concertnieuws Recensie: Vernieuwend en indrukwekkend is de ganse show van Tina Turner. 5 Keer doet ze het Sportpaleis in Merksem aan. Ondertussen heeft de kranige 60er al 4 van haar Belgische concerten erop zitten. Op 30 april komt ze nog eens. De ticketverkoop ging ontzettend had vorig jaar. 5 Uitverkochte concerten zijn een knap resultaat en dat terwijl Turner de laatste jaren nauwelijks nieuwe nummers heeft uitgebracht. Hoeveel lokale kopieën van Turner moeten er niet op deze wereldbol rondlopen vraag ik me soms af. Onze eigenste Natalia wordt wel eens de Vlaamse Turner genoemd. Wel, we hebben haar al heel wat soloconcerten zien geven. Conclusie: in vergelijking met Turner is ze klein bier. De promoboys en-girls samen met enkele collega journalisten verzoeken we dan ook vriendelijk elke vergelijking vanaf nu te staken. Hoge veiligheidsvoorschriften in het Sportpaleis. Een zittend middenplein, voor de eerste rijen werd een rood lint gespannen. Het soort lint dat je op luchthavens vindt. Daarachter stond of zat en leger veiligheidsmensen. Ook in de zaal zelf zaten er een aantal of wandelden die rond. Zelfs rond de volgspotters op het balkon stond steevast veiligheidspersoneel. Op de tram hoorde ik enkele West-Vlamingen mopperen en zich vragen stellen waarom de dopjes van de flesjes water werden gedaan. Ook dat was een veiligheidsmaatregel. Bij Livenation die Rock Werchter organiseren, zijn ze de editie van 1991 nog lang niet vergeten. Toen vroeg Iggy Pop aan het publiek om met de plastiek flessen te smijten. Tijdens het concert van The Police en hun nummer "Message in a bottle“ vlogen de flesjes in de lucht. De boodschap kwam bij sommigen hard aan en het Rode Kruis mocht heel wat gekwetsten, waaronder enkelen met neusbeenbreuken, verzorgen. Sindsdien, komt het wel vaker voor dat er flesjes zonder dop worden geserveerd. Alles voor de veiligheid van het publiek, maar vooral voor de artiest uiteraard. Ook buiten achteraan werd alles hermetisch afgesloten en zagen we ongeziene maatregelen. Enkel het bezoek van de Dalai Lama aan het Sportpaleis enkele jaren geleden was nog straffer, meen ik me te herinneren. Toen was de Staatsveiligheid zelfs paraat. Turner en haar entourage zijn dus niet toegankelijk voor publiek. Zelfs onze eigen pers moet het doen met interviews die aan andere zenders werden gegeven. Turner houdt niet van promo. We kunnen haar geen ongelijk geven. Duizenden keren op dezelfde vragen antwoorden, terwijl er slechts hier en daar een muzikale vraag in zit. Wie wil dat eigenlijk? Turner heeft ook geen promo meer nodig. Vier concerten op een mum van tijd uitverkopen, nagenoeg enkel door media-aandacht, nog voor de reclamemachine in gang moest getrokken worden. Dat moet je maar doen! En die snelle beslissers kregen waar voor hun geld. Turner die bijna 70 is, smeet zich volledig. Het lijkt wel alsof ze denkt dat ze nog maar een twintiger is. Wat een bom vol energie zagen we daar aan het werk! Het zaallicht ging uit, en al meteen ging het publiek uit zijn dak. Het rode gordijn ging open en Turner daalde naar beneden af op haar vierkante blokje. "Steamy windows“ zong ze. Wat later zouden de ramen inderdaad beginnen aandampen. Buiten was het winderig en viel de regen met bakken uit de lucht. De parkingmedewerkers leken eerder op verzopen waterkiekens. "Alles voor Tina“ moeten die mensen meermaals gedacht hebben. En Tina gaf alles ook terug. Al meteen trok ze een blik hits open "Typical male“ en "River deep mountain high“ volgden elkaar in sneltreinvaart op. "Super“ zei ze in het Duits. Ze zou het nog een drietal keer herhalen. Visueel kregen we een waar spektakel te zien. Na "What you see is what you get“ zagen we een verbluffende choreografie tussen enkele "Ninja's“. Het spektakel dat we voorgeschoteld kregen was een mengeling van hiphoptechnieken en gevechtsport. Indrukwekkend. Na "What's love got to do with it“ vroeg Turner aan de vrouwen om deze zin te zingen. De mannen hadden daarna iets minder zin, zo leek het. "Let's give the fellows a second chance. As usual“ zo repliceerde Turner gevat. De dames kwamen niet bij. Ook wij waren behoorlijk onder de indruk van de humor en toegegeven ook de waarheid die er in haar zin zat. "Private dancer“ klonk ontzettend horny zoals we gewend zijn van dat nummer. De saxofoon is prominent aanwezig, en klonk ijzersterk. Ook John Miles is dat trouwens aan zijn elektrische gitaar. Hij neemt zeer vaak ook de mannelijke backing vocals voor zijn rekening. Een kooi komt naar beneden. We zien een leider van een of andere stam, en daarna komt ook de koningin van de rock. Turner zingt "We don't need another hero“. Wat er allemaal choreografisch in die kooi gebeurt, is teveel om op te noemen. Het nummer sluit af met vuurwerk en het rode gordijn gaat opnieuw dicht. Na de pauze laat Turner opnieuw horen dat ze op haar leeftijd nog over een goede stem beschikt. Al moet gezegd dat ze soms in het eerste deel buiten adem was en dat ook te horen was in haar zang. Wat wil je, Turner wil per se nog de dansjes meedoen, de trappen op en af gaan, terwijl ze zingt. Logisch dat ze dan soms een noot inhoudt. Turner weet nochtans haar stem ook te sparen. Backing vocal Lisa neemt de zanglijn soms op het einde van een nummer van haar over, terwijl Turner de coulissen ingaat voor een kledingwissel. De backing vocal mag even naar het voorplan, en krijgt daar ook het publiek mee. Al wachten anderen ook geduldig op het moment dat Turner terug verschijnt. Deel twee start wanneer Turner de eerste nummers op een kruk samen met enkele muzikanten rond haar zingt. En daarna haalt Turner alles uit de kast. Tijdens "Golden Eye“ zien we uit het bovenste niveau van het podium een trap via een harmonicasysteem naar boven gaan. Enkele minuten geleden nog, stonden de dansers te dansen op die stukjes die nu zich tot treden hebben gevormd. Dit is een stukje technisch vernuft en behoorlijk vernieuwend. Ook het 007-diafragma dat vanonder naar boven opstijgt en waaruit Turner komt, is indrukwekkend. Ondertussen zien we ook de dansers het beste van zichzelf geven. Nu al is de avond meer dan geslaagd en de finale moet nog komen. En wat voor een finale! "Addicted to love“ kondigt de absolute hit van Turner aan. Zowat het ganse Sportpaleis gaat tekeer op de tonen van "Simply the best“. Minutenlang krijgt ze daarvoor een staande ovatie. Het publiek is wildenthousiast. Turner stelt haar band voor en klinkt hipper dan ooit wanneer ze de man aan de keyboards en musical director Oliver voorstelt als "Ollie“. Met een ontzettend strakke "Proud Mary“ sluit ze het concert af. Wanneer we denken dat we ondertussen alles gehad hebben, en de bissen simpel zullen zijn, blijkt dat Turner nog een showelement heeft overgehouden tot het laatst. Tijdens "Nutbush city limits“ gaat een stuk uit het podium en draait het 90 graden als een ladder over het publiek van het middenplein. Turner nog steeds op hakken, gaat erop, loopt erop, en laat zich door de balustrade aan het uiteinde tegenhouden.     Honour Killing in Sindh Men's and Women's Divergent Accounts Shahnaz Begum Laghari PhD University of York Women’s Studies March 2016 Abstract The aim of this project is to investigate the phenomenon of honour-related violence, the most extreme form of which is honour killing. The research was conducted in Sindh (one of the four provinces of Pakistan). The main research question is, ‘Are these killings for honour?’ This study was inspired by a need to investigate whether the practice of honour killing in Sindh is still guided by the norm of honour or whether other elements have come to the fore. It is comprised of the experiences of those involved in honour killings through informal, semi- structured, open-ended, in-depth interviews, conducted under the framework of the qualitative method. The aim of my thesis is to apply a feminist perspective in interpreting the data to explore the tradition of honour killing and to let the versions of the affected people be heard. In my research, the women who are accused as karis, having very little redress, are uncertain about their lives; they speak and reveal the motives behind the allegations and killings in the name of honour. The male killers, whom I met inside and outside the jails, justify their act of killing in the name of honour, culture, tradition and religion. Drawing upon interviews with thirteen women and thirteen men, I explore and interpret the data to reveal their childhood, educational, financial and social conditions and the impacts of these on their lives, thoughts and actions.
