Course Objectives: To grasp the flow of Christian history in the western world from 1500 A.D. to 1900, its interchange with the non-western world in light of transoceanic exploration and the challenges faced through the division of Christendom at the Reformation, the rise of Enlightenment ideas, the advance of secularization and the eventual challenge offered to the dominance of Europe. To gain the ability to speak and write insightfully regarding the interpretation of this history and the application of its lessons to modern Christianity Course Texts (3): Henry Bettenson & Chris Maunder, eds. Documents of the Christian Church 4th Edition, (Oxford, 2011) Be sure to obtain the 4th edition as documents will be identified by page no. Justo Gonzáles, The Story of Christianity Vol. II, 2nd edition (HarperOne, 2010); insist on 2nd ed. Kenneth J. Atlas of the European Reformations (Minneapolis/London: Fortress Press/Lion, 2015) Course Requirements: Due: Book Review: A 1,000 word review of a biography or church- Review due Fri. June 21th by historical work pertaining to the period 1500-1900. Submit 5pm electronically as a Word document.The instructor will provide fuller details as to what is expected. 15% of final score. Examinations (2): A mid-term exam on Thursday, June 20 and a Mid-term: Thurs. June 20 at final exam a week beyond the final class meeting (which will be 8am June 29) Value: 25% for mid-term; 25% for final. Your final exam will need to be written under the supervision of a proctor. Final must be taken by June 29 2 Essay: You will compose a 3,000 word essay which will investigate (rather than simply narrate) a question or problem in Christian Essay due by July 5 history since 1500. You will assemble a bibliography of 6-8 items, use the best sources available and properly document quoted material (Kate Turabian or the Chicago Manual of Style standards are preferred). Submit electronically as a Word document.   • Wilberforce Penned These Words in His Diary: “God Almighty Has Set Before Me Two Great Objects, the Suppression of the Slave Trade and the Reformation of Manners”
    “The unweary, unostentation, and inglorious crusade of England against slavery may probably be regarded as among the three or four perfectly virtuous pages comprised in the history of nations.” W. E. Lecky1 ”His standing in the country and in Parliament was unique. No man before, and no one since, has held quite his position. Unconnected to any great family, belonging to no party or faction, holding no office or official position, he was yet regarded by all as among the foremost men of his time, and by many in Parliament as the living embodiment of the national conscience.” Sir Patrick Cormack, M. P.2 A remarkable moment in a remarkable life occurred on Sunday, October 28, 1787 when William Wilberforce penned these words in his diary: “God Almighty has set before me two great objects, the suppression of the slave trade and the reformation of manners”. Indeed, the Lord had set before him two great goals and these goals were to provide the impetus for a life of almost frenetic activity – however it is vital to understand that the man who in these words articulates what would be his life’s work wrote as a man fully and fervently committed to Jesus Christ. If this was a defining moment in his life, his conversion to Christ was the great turning point! This man’s faith was a faith that worked (James 2:1-18). After his death the York Herald of August 3, 1833 said: “His warfare is accomplished, his cause is finished, he kept the faith. Those who regarded him merely as a philanthropist, in the worldly sense of that abused term, know but little of his character.”3 He was, in a very real sense, God’s Politician!4 EARLY LIFE.

It is also intended to help prepare students for the First (Written) Examination. They should be able to draw on multiple works to make larger arguments concerning major problems in European history. Reviewed by Susan Wabuda (Department of History, Fordham University) Published on H-Albion (November, 2005) Reformation Resurgens The Reformation was such a startling break in the cultural and political fabric of Europe that it has often had to be understood in slices. So vast in its consequences, historians and theologians have frequently chosen to explore it in terms of their own discreet specialties. The lives and writings of its leaders, and the efforts of its opponents, have been examined in countless works. Nearly every religious affiliation has used it to focus on its own history, until the Reformation has sometimes seemed like a hostage to denominational studies. To explore the entire breadth of the Reformation without partiality or favor, to come to grips with the challenges of source material that stretches across several linguistic boundaries, and to deal with the historiographical and denominational issues of interpretation, are all enormous tasks. In The Reformation, Diarmaid MacCulloch has written a superb, nuanced account of what he terms "the greatest fault line to appear in Christian culture since the Latin and Greek halves of the Roman Empire went their separate ways a thousand years before" (p. xviii). As an editor of The Journal of Ecclesiastical History, one of the premier quarterlies in the field, MacCulloch is well placed to survey that fault line through the latest scholarly trends.

De Hamel, who receives the £40,000 prize, is Fellow and former librarian of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. He was one of six authors shortlisted for the Prize earlier this year.
