Britain, however, expressed only a narrow preferment for the Conservative Party and Prime Minister Winston Churchill's administra- tion had a lead of only sixteen seats in the House of Commons, as compared with Labor's rule during the preceding twenty months with a majority of six. Political commentators had foretold a landslide for the Conservative Party but Labor retained a plurality of the total votes cast. As in previous years, domestic issues were most persistent in the campaign; but while the cost of living and the housing problem were the dominant issues, the loss of prestige suffered by Britain in the Middle East as a result of the dispute with Iran and the denunciation by Egypt of its 1936 treaty with Great Britain were undoubtedly factors in terminating the Socialist regime. In its attitude to Germany and Western Europe, Conservative policy did not radically vary from its predecessor's, promising only limited participation in any scheme for European unity. The Labor Party voted against ratification of the Contrac- tual Agreement with the Bonn Government in July 1952 on the grounds that this agreement was premature, offering Germany rearmament that would per- manently divide the country and sharpen divisions with Russia before all possibilities of German unification had been explored. Nor was the Labor Party satisfied that Chancellor Konrad Adenauer had the full backing of the West German people. Issues affecting the Jews were absent from the 1951 election, and only a few minor anti-Semitic manifestations occurred during the campaign. -

The Dutch government, which heads the Coun cil for the rest of this year, hopes that the ministers will be able to find political solutions to legal issues that the Council's working party so far has failed to re solve at its weekly meetings. But Community officials are increasingly doubtful whether the problems can be solved hy the end of 1976, the deadline for implementing the proposed system for the 1978 Connnunity Budget. In 1973 the Europe?n Commission had proposed harmoni zation of the VAT base in order to facilitate calculation of part of the Community Budget starting in '78 (Common Market Reports, Par. 3165). This proposal followed up on the Council's 1970 decision that the contributions to the Budget now derived from agricultural levies and customs du ties should be augmented as of 1979 by national VAT revenue obtained by applying a rate not exceeding 1% on a uniform assessment base. -

Leadership and Change: Prime Ministers in the Post-War World - Alec Douglas-Home Transcript Date: Thursday, 24 May 2007 - 12:00AM PRIME MINISTERS IN THE POST-WAR WORLD: ALEC DOUGLAS-HOME D.R. Thorpe After Andrew Bonar Law's funeral in Westminster Abbey in November 1923, Herbert Asquith observed, 'It is fitting that we should have buried the Unknown Prime Minister by the side of the Unknown Soldier'. Asquith owed Bonar Law no posthumous favours, and intended no ironic compliment, but the remark was a serious under-estimate. In post-war politics Alec Douglas-Home is often seen as the Bonar Law of his times, bracketed with his fellow Scot as an interim figure in the history of Downing Street between longer serving Premiers; in Bonar Law's case, Lloyd George and Stanley Baldwin, in Home's, Harold Macmillan and Harold Wilson. Both Law and Home were certainly 'unexpected' Prime Ministers, but both were also 'under-estimated' and they made lasting beneficial changes to the political system, both on a national and a party level. The unexpectedness of their accessions to the top of the greasy pole, and the brevity of their Premierships (they were the two shortest of the 20th century, Bonar Law's one day short of seven months, Alec Douglas-Home's two days short of a year), are not an accurate indication of their respective significance, even if the precise details of their careers were not always accurately recalled, even by their admirers. The Westminster village is often another world to the general public. Stanley Baldwin was once accosted on a train from Chequers to London, at the height of his fame, by a former school friend. -

In my approach to the topic I wish to be somewhat more general than merely considering the aspect of food prices although I intend to give these special attention. My comments must necessarily be brief and in many cases tentative as I am currently engaged in a steady of the impact of the EEC on Ireland) both North and South. In making this study I have had the support of the Committee for Social Research in Ireland whose offices are located here in Belfast. My first point is to restate that a consumer is generally a producer viewed from a specific aspect. The producer’s concern is to obtain income and the consumers to get the most value from this income. In a period of inflation the consumer’s standard of living will rise if the general price rise is slower than the rise in his income as a producer. In the Republic this has been true for large segments of the population though inevitably there have been the usual, victims of inflation - frequently pensioners and lenders. Any consideration of the EEC’s impact on the consumer must be supplemented by an investigation of the Community’s impact on the income which he or she has to spend and this is something to which I hope to return briefly later on. -

1 WITTEVEEN, Hendrikus Johannes (known as Johan or Johannes), Dutch politician and fifth Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) 1973-1978, was born 12 June 1921 in Den Dolder and passed away 23 April 2019 in Wassenaar, the Netherlands. He was the son of Willem Gerrit Witteveen, civil engineer and Rotterdam city planner, and Anna Maria Wibaut, leader of a local Sufi centre. On 3 March 1949 he married Liesbeth Ratan de Vries Feijens, piano teacher, with whom he had one daughter and three sons. His mother was the daughter of a prominent Social-Democrat couple, Floor Wibaut and Mathilde Wibaut-Berdenis van Berlekom, but politically Witteveen’s parents were Liberal. His mother was actively involved in the Dutch Sufi movement, inspired by Inayat Khan, the teacher of Universal Sufism. Sufism emphasizes establishing harmonious human relations through its focus on themes such as love, harmony and beauty. Witteveen felt attracted to Sufism, which helped him to become a more balanced young person. At the age of 18 the leader of the Rotterdam Sufi Centre formally initiated him, which led to his lifelong commitment to, and study of, the Sufi message. After attending public grammar school, the Gymnasium Erasmianum, Witteveen studied economics at the Netherlands School of Economics between 1939 and 1946. The aerial bombardment of Rotterdam by the German air force in May 1940 destroyed the city centre and marked the beginning of the occupation of the Netherlands by Nazi Germany.
