The estate of Arthur Conan Doyle has authorised Andrew Lane to write a series of books about the early years of Sherlock Holmes, and if this book is typical then they made an excellent choice. Through these stories, we see the development of the complex and sometimes contradictory aspects Young Sherlock Holmes: Fire Storm Sherlock's personality, set in the context of the most thrilling adventures and courageous acts Young Sherlock Holmes: Fire Storm derring-do a young person could desire. The young hero finds himself in such dire straits at times that the reader will have to keep reminding himself that Sherlock lives to adulthood: nonetheless, it is hard to imagine just how he will escape the various perils he finds himself in, never mind rescue his friends. The book is definitely not one for those who Young Sherlock Holmes: Fire Storm from a weak stomach, although there is nothing here you would not find in the contemporary adventures of, say, Alex Rider. The story teems with strange and formidable villains, dangers galore and enough mysteries, codes and clues to satisfy any fan of the crime genre. In this particular volume, Sherlock uncovers a connection between a vicious housekeeper and a family secret which almost destroys his confidence in his own abilities. He battles a cruel felon bent on deadly revenge, he solves the enigma of the walking dead men, and in the midst of it all, he experiences, to his astonishment, the first stirrings of young love. From the very first pages of the book, we learn that the life of Virginia Crowe, a feisty and courageous young girl who has won Sherlock's heart, is under threat. Sherlock and his good friend Matty return from fighting a sordid blackmailer to discover that the girl and her father have suddenly disappeared, taking all their belongings with them. Fortunately, they leave behind a single, subtle clue to their destination. Sherlock's brilliant and logical mind, combined with the more emotional, intuitive insights of Matty, lead them at last to their friends, although they do have to endure some rather horrible tortures on the way. What is fascinating and distinctive about these books is the way they seek to foreshadow the later life of Sherlock Holmes. For adult readers, familiar with Conan Doyle's stories, the hints are very obvious, but they are not, of course, the target audience. Few young people will have read an original Holmes story, although they will be familiar with him through general culture and television adaptations. Here he is Young Sherlock Holmes: Fire Storm, at fourteen, a wild mix of logic and sensitivity, with a passion for justice which frequently puts him in mortal danger and an abundance of headstrong courage. We even see him, as this story opens, beginning to understand that playing the violin is not merely a question of getting the notes in the right order. This combination of Young Sherlock Holmes: Fire Storm adventure and curious mysteries, set in the murky underbelly of nineteenth-century England, will give its young readers a great deal of pleasure. Young Sherlock Holmes: Fire Storm by Andy Lane Young Sherlock Holmes is a series of young adult thriller novels by British author Andrew Lane featuring Arthur Conan Doyle 's detective Sherlock Holmes as a teenager in the s and 70s that is faced with numerous mysteries, crimes and adventures throughout the series. So far there have been eight books released in the series, with the eighth book released in September Based on the success of Charlie Higson 's bestselling Young Bond series, the estate of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle authorised a series of books detailing the life of the teenage Sherlock Holmes'. One of Andrew Lane's key aims is to explain some of the complexities of Holmes' character, who is scientific and analytical on the one hand, Young Sherlock Holmes: Fire Storm artistic and moody on the other. Lane also wanted to ensure that his stories jibed with the original Doyle stories as it bothered him that Watson was presented as a young friend of Holmes in Young Sherlock Holmes which contradicts the events of A Study in Scarlet. In the page proposal that I put together, it was important that the series took Sherlock from being a year-old boy at school, through university, and leads seamlessly to the opening lines of the first of Doyle's Sherlock novels. I didn't want them to be seen as period pieces with Victorian wood-cut-style covers, but as contemporary, 21st-century books.     Young Sherlock Holmes (1985) Young Sherlock Holmes is a 1985 American mystery adventure film directed by Barry Levinson and written by Chris Columbus, based on the characters created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Friendship is at the core of Young Sherlock Holmes, an imaginative recreation of how Sherlock Holmes and John Watson became friends. Their personalities are diametrically opposed. Holmes is independent and daring, and Watson is a “play it by the book” medical student, staunchly averse to risk, always worried about jeopardizing his academic future. However, he admires Holmes’s adventurous spirit. Despite their differences, their affection for one another grows and is celebrated in the many detective novels of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The film begins in Victorian England on a dark night when we see a hooded assassin use a blowpipe to shoot a dart into an unsuspecting man. The dart causes the man to hallucinate and commit suicide. Two more people die under similar circumstances; and Holmes, a friend of one of the victims, tries to piece together clues to find the murderer. This leads to all sorts of escapades in which he and Watson put themselves in danger as they discover an Egyptian cult bent on taking revenge for a wrong committed many years earlier. At the end of their adventure, Holmes and Watson take leave of one another, and Watson realizes he forgot to thank him. Watson reflects: “He had taken a weak, frightened boy and made him into a courageous, strong man. My heart soared.” The friendship has transformed Watson and for that he is eternally grateful.

    Erica Hateley Irregular Readers Arthur Conan Doyle’s “six dirty scoundrels”, Boyhood and Literacy in Contemporary Sherlockian Children’s Literature Abstract: Young adult (YA) literature is a socialising genre that encourages young readers to take up particular ways of relating to historical or cultural materials. The first decade of the twenty-first century witnessed a boom in Sherlockian YA fiction using the Conan Doyle canon as a context and vocabulary for stories focused on the Baker Street Irregulars as figures of identification. This paper reads YA fiction’s deployment of Conan Doyle’s fictional universe as a strategy for negotiating anxieties of adolescent mas- culinity, particularly in relation to literacy and social agency. Keywords: Young adult literature, detective fiction, masculinity, lit- eracy, adolescence, intertextuality Holmes was Billy’s hero, the man that more than any other in the world he wanted to be like. Holmes’s ability to solve mysteries, using nothing more than his powers of observation and deduction, brought pleas for his help from all over the world. (Pigott-Smith, 18) At the turn of the twentieth century detective stories and their ado- lescent ilk, boys’ magazine literary cultures (and novels such as those later produced by the Stratemeyer Syndicate) were seen as fodder for juvenile delinquency. One significant exception were Arthur Co- nan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories, published between 1887 and 1927, but already being endorsed by no less an authority than Robert Baden-Powell in Scouting for Boys (1908).
