Shaping Sense Italian Post-War Functionalistic Design
Kjetil Fallan SHAPING SENSE ITALIAN POST-WAR FUNCTIONALISTIC DESIGN Thesis in fulfilment of the degree of cand. philol. (MA) Department of History / Centre for Technology and Society Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) Trondheim 2001 To my parents “We have never discussed it, but I think the main reason why we are reluctant to get married is all those dreadful presents you get and can not dispose of just like that. Every christmas, we get a little foretaste of that hell. Cathrine’s parents have gotten wind of our “interest in design”, so that is why the garish wrapping paper nor- mally contains something even more garish; rubbish from Alessi.” -Torgrim Eggen in Pynt Preface This project has been fatiguing in addition to being extremely interesting. I would never have finished it without the help and support from many persons: I wish to thank my supervisor Per Østby for taking on such a unorthodox project. His enthusiasm has been very important to me, and his experience crucial to my work. Øst- by and my co-supervisor Stig Kvaal have guided a sometimes frustrated candidate through the non-determined, multidirectional flux of writing history. Centre for Technology and Society has been my haunt the last two years. I am very thankful for the good working environment the centre has provided me with. I have shared office, problems and laughter with Jon N. Eikrem and Finn Arne Jørgensen. Jørgensen also deserves many thanks for his proofreading and formatting. I also wish to thank the staff at the Biblioteca Nazionale Braidense and the Settore Bib- lioteca, Documentazione, Archivio of the Triennale di Milano for being so helpful and service-minded. -

When La Biennale di Venezia Meets History does not just convey the content that visitors to the Central Pavilion in the Giardini della Biennale will encounter, but also a vision. Disquiet serves as a driving force behind research, which requires dialogue to verify its theories and needs history to absorb knowledge. This is what La Biennale does and will continue to do as it seeks to reinforce a methodology that creates even stronger bonds between its own disciplines. There are six Muses at the Biennale: Art, Architecture, Cinema, Theatre, Music and Dance, given a voice through the great events that fill Venice and the world every year. There are the places that serve as venues for all of La Biennale’s activities: the Giardini, the Arsenale, the Palazzo del Cinema and other cinemas on the Lido, the theatres, the city of Venice itself. -

UNFOLDING of HISTORY. AGOSTINO BONALUMI, SANDRO DE ALEXANDRIS” Curated by Marco Meneguzzo
MILAN GALLERIA 10 A.M. ART FROM 10 JUNE TO 30 SEPTEMBER 2021 “UNFOLDING OF HISTORY. AGOSTINO BONALUMI, SANDRO DE ALEXANDRIS” curated by Marco Meneguzzo From 10 June to 30 September the Galleria 10 A.M. ART in Milan is organising the show Unfolding of history. Agostino Bonalumi, Sandro De Alexandris. In the show an important selection of works from the 1960s and 1970s will open a new dialogue between the researches of the two artists. This is what the curator, Marco Meneguzzo, has written: The habit of looking at a certain kind of reading of history – all histories – is usually generated by a very convincing interpretation of what has happened, and also of the inevitable generalisations that the distance in time from the events produces in those very interpretations. The history of art, which is made of individuals as well as of languages, is not immune from these generalisations and habits: the cataloguing by movements and by successive phases really is convenient (from the viewpoint of scholastic or frivolous divulgation) and allows the placing of each work of an artist in the place that news and the universally known attribute to them, and thus to define them once and for all, in such a way as to make clear what we are speaking about and anyway the territory in which we move. Luckily, history is a dynamic affair that, even without resorting to impossible revisionism, in the urgency of defining certain important moments of its course – important for us, not for history in itself which is indifferent –, together with generalisations, searches the opposite pole in order to refine its own view, to make it more acute until it finds the various underground rivers of its own course which, on the one hand, shift from the principle current and, on the other, perhaps finds in another direction part of that current that was held to run calmly to the mouth. -

National and International Modernism in Italian Sculpture from 1935-1959
National and International Modernism in Italian Sculpture from 1935-1959 by Antje K. Gamble A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (History of Art) in the University of Michigan 2015 Doctoral Committee: Professor Alexander D. Potts, Chair Associate Professor Giorgio Bertellini Professor Matthew N. Biro Sharon Hecker Associate Professor Claire A. Zimmerman Associate Professor Rebecca Zurier Copyright: Antje K. Gamble, 2015 © Acknowledgements As with any large project, this dissertation could not have been completed without the support and guidance of a large number of individuals and institutions. I am glad that I have the opportunity to acknowledge them here. There were a large number of funding sources that allowed me to study, travel, and conduct primary research that I want to thank: without them, I would not have been able to do the rich archival study that has, I think, made this dissertation an important contribution to the field. For travel funding to Italy, I thank the Horace R. Rackham Graduate School at the University of Michigan for its support with the Rackham International International Research Award and the Rackham Rackham Humanities Research Fellowship. For writing support and U.S.-based research funding, I thank the Department of History of Art at the University of Michigan, the Rackham Graduate School, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the University of Michigan Museum of Art. For conference travel support, I thank the Horace R. Rackham Graduate School, the Department of History of Art, and the American Association of Italian Studies. While in Italy, I was fortunate enough to work with a great number of amazing scholars, archivists, librarians and museum staff who aided in my research efforts. -
CS Gillo Dorfles Engl
One of the things that has always interested me and that interests me most is studying the person, “man” as he is, his virtues and his defects. [...] I’ve always been curious about the world and I think that this depends uniquely on the great interest I’ve always felt, and still feel, for my fellow man. Fortunately, other people interest me more than myself.” (Gillo Dorfles, Catalogue raisonné, Mazzotta, 2010) Gillo Dorfles. Ieri e oggi Curated by Luigi Sansone Opening: January 14, 2014 from 6 pm From January 15 to February 22, 2014 The Fondazione Marconi is pleased to present an exhibition devoted to the works of Gillo Dorfles, a polyhedric personality of the contemporary artistic and cultural scene. Artist, teacher of aesthetics, philosopher and an extremely prolific and innovative art critic, Gillo Dorfles is a direct witness of XXth century artistic movements in which he is involved sometimes as a protagonist, some others as a careful critic and observer. Dorfles devotes himself to painting since the early Thirties. He starts executing surreal compositions in egg tempera, a technique used by the XVth century masters. The artist himself admits that in those years he was not aiming to say something precise. Certain pre-existent symbols interested him: the cross, the moon and the sun were archetypal forms that seemed particularly suggestive to him and he used them but also in a very casual way. Since the beginning his painting – defined “organic” and “vaguely surreal” – is unencumbered by any subjection to rigid geometric structures and by the given rules of a sterile abstract style. -
Edizioni Originali Degli Scrittori Italiani (1900-1947)
