Rao) Twenty out of twenty-six of Andrea Camilleri’s detective Montalbano novels feature three motifs related to the mafia. First, although the mafia is not necessarily the main subject of the narratives, mafioso behavior and communication are present in all novels through both mafia and non-mafia-affiliated characters and dialogue. Second, within the narratives there is a distinction between the old and the new generations of the mafia, and a preference for the old mafia ways. Last, the mafia is illustrated as the usual suspect in everyday crime, consequentially diverting attention and accountability away from government authorities. Few critics have focused on Camilleri’s representations of the mafia and their literary significance in mafia and detective fiction. The purpose of the present study is to cast light on these three motifs through a close reading and analysis of the detective Montalbano novels, lending a new twist to the genre of detective fiction.

VOCAL 78 rpm Discs Minimum bid as indicated per item. Listings “Just about 1-2” should be considered as mint and “Cons. 2” with just the slightest marks. For collectors searching top copies, you’ve come to the right place! The further we get from the time of production (in many cases now 100 years or more), the more difficult it is to find such excellent extant pressings. Some are actually from mint dealer stocks and others the result of having improved copies via dozens of collections purchased over the past fifty years. * * * For those looking for the best sound via modern reproduction, those items marked “late” are usually of high quality shellac, pressed in the 1950-55 period. A number of items in this particular catalogue are excellent pressings from that era. * * * Please keep in mind that the minimum bids are in U.S. Dollars, a benefit to most collectors. * * * “Text label on verso.” For a brief period (1912-14), Victor pressed silver-on-black labels on the reverse sides of some of their single-faced recordings, usually with a translation of the text or similarly related comments. She subsequently studied with de Reszke him- self and appeared with him at the Paris Opéra, making her debut as Gounod’s Juliette.

  • Diva: Early Film Culture and Image Theory in Italy
Dalle Vacche, Angela. Diva: Defiance and Passion in Early Italian Cinema. Austin: University of Texas Press, March 2008. Introduction. Mater Dolorosa A “diva” is the most important woman singer, the prima donna on the stage of opera, but this word can also describe an arrogant or temperamental woman. Close to the English word divine, “diva” means goddess, while the label “diva” competes for the spotlight with God, the ultimate divine maker of stars. Whereas God coincides with eternity, stars live and die. The point here is that the word diva strives for timelessness and infinity. By contrast, the word star is about someone special or exceptional or super-human (1), but not comparable to a divinity. In her best moments, the diva involves a certain kind of ineffable spirituality, ritualistic otherness, and an intuitive aura about transcendence. In short, the diva is an anomalous “star” in comparison to the Hollywood model which has defined film stardom for the rest of the world. The diva’s unusual contribution to the history of stardom stems from the cultural specificities of Italian modernity. In early Italian cinema, “diva” meant female star in a “long” feature film of at least sixty minutes, with some close- ups for the heroine and a fairly static use of the camera. The 12 point-of-view shot and the shot reverse shot, two basic features of classical American cinema, did not exist in the Italian films made between 1913 and 1918. However, the point-of-view shot begins to appear around 1919 or 1920 in diva-films. The three most famous divas of this period were Francesca Bertini (1892-1985), Lyda Borelli (1887-1959), and Pina Menichelli (1890-1984).

All of the works discussed are detective novels set the south-western part of Sicily. The authors chosen for analysis use a traditional, formulaic and popular template of the detective story, or some variation thereof, and their novels all contain the figure of the detective as a protagonist and organizing narrative device. The contemporary Sicilian detective novel, as demonstrated by the works of the three selected writers, reveal the importance of place. This thesis compares and contrasts the manner in which the Sicilian locale or setting is depicted, related to, constructed, invented and contextualized by each author. The idea of Sicily as a simulacrum is also discussed. As each author recreates his settings in novel form, these simulacra go on to form connections with, overlap or negate other literary spaces, not all of them located in Sicily or even Italy. The places of the novels are examined with reference to real cities, towns and communities. Furthermore, the emphasis is on how these fictional representations are created or fit into relationships with other texts and genres.
