Rao © 2015 Adriana Nicole Cerami ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Adriana Nicole Cerami: Mafia Motifs in Andrea Camilleri’s Detective Montalbano Novels: From the Culture and Breakdown of Omertà to Mafia as a Scapegoat for the Failure of State (Under the direction of Ennio I. Rao) Twenty out of twenty-six of Andrea Camilleri’s detective Montalbano novels feature three motifs related to the mafia. First, although the mafia is not necessarily the main subject of the narratives, mafioso behavior and communication are present in all novels through both mafia and non-mafia-affiliated characters and dialogue. Second, within the narratives there is a distinction between the old and the new generations of the mafia, and a preference for the old mafia ways. Last, the mafia is illustrated as the usual suspect in everyday crime, consequentially diverting attention and accountability away from government authorities. Few critics have focused on Camilleri’s representations of the mafia and their literary significance in mafia and detective fiction. The purpose of the present study is to cast light on these three motifs through a close reading and analysis of the detective Montalbano novels, lending a new twist to the genre of detective fiction. -

ALEXANDRA PREITSCHOPF Between the Local and the Global: The Meaning of the Banlieue, Nation, Religion and Transnational Solidarity in French Muslim Rap GLOBAL CONVERSATIONS: An International Journal in Contemporary Philosophy and Culture Volume I, Number 01 (2018): 104-116 Society and Culture BETWEEN THE LOCAL AND THE GLOBAL: THE MEANING OF THE BANLIEUE, NATION, RELIGION AND TRANSNATIONAL SOLIDARITY IN FRENCH MUSLIM RAP Alexandra Preitschopf Abstract Regarding current trends in popular culture and especially in rap music, the case of France is especially interesting, considering that French rap artists often are children or grandchildren of immigrants and/or from Muslim background. Many of them are very critical concerning French policies and France’s colonial histo- ry or denounce the living conditions in the banlieues (suburbs), discriminations against migrants, racism, xenophobia or Islamophobia. This is often combined with references to Islamic religion and/or a self-presentation of the rappers as Muslim citizens and goes in many cases along with declarations of solidarity with Muslims in other parts of the world, especially in Palestine. In this sense, local, national and historical belongings (the Banlieue, France, the Maghreb,…) and a transnational, global Muslim identity (the Umma) interact and converge. However, this phenomenon is not found only in rap music; it rather reflects general contemporary socio-political processes in France, and Western Europe. On this basis, the present paper aims to take a closer look at se- lected lyrics of French Muslim rappers and analyse them in the wider context of ongoing debates on integration, Islam, laicism and multiculturalism. These are core aspects of our humanity. Much of my work focuses on Haitian Vodou music. --La fin du monde by N.A.P. (1998) and Mauvais Oeil by Lunatic (2000) are considered breakthrough albums for lyrics that draw from the Arabic-Islamic lexical field. Since (2001) many artists have drawn from the Islamic lexical field in their raps. This project began with questions about the Arabic Islamic words and expressions used on recordings by French rappers from cities like Paris, Marseille, Le Havre, Lille, Strasbourg, and others. Art, Activism and the Creation of Awareness of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG); Walking With Our Sisters, REDress Project by Gail Gallagher A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Faculty of Native Studies University of Alberta © Gail Gallagher, 2020 ABSTRACT Artistic expression can be used as a tool to promote activism, to educate and to provide healing opportunities for the families of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls (MMIWG). Indigenous activism has played a significant role in raising awareness of the MMIWG issue in Canada, through the uniting of various Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities. The role that the Walking With Our Sisters (WWOS) initiative and the REDress project plays in bringing these communities together, to reduce the sexual exploitation and marginalization of Indigenous women, will be examined. These two commemorative projects bring an awareness of how Indigenous peoples interact with space in political and cultural ways, and which mainstream society erases. This thesis will demonstrate that through the process to bring people together, there has been education of the MMIWG issue, with more awareness developed with regards to other Indigenous issues within non-Indigenous communities. Furthermore, this paper will show that in communities which have united in their experience with grief and injustice, healing has begun for the Indigenous individuals, families and communities affected.
