Pupillid Land Snails of Eastern North America*

In some regions pupillids represent 80-100% of total molluscan diversity within sites, notably in taiga, tundra, and the base-poor pine savannas and pocosins of the southeastern coastal plain. Adequate documentation of North American land snail biodiversity thus requires investigators to effi ciently collect and accurately identify individuals of this group. This paper presents a set of annotated keys to the 65 species in this family known to occur in North America east of the Rocky Mountains. The distinguishing taxonomic features, updated county-scale range maps, and ecological conditions favored by each are presented in hopes of stimulating future research in this important group. Knowledge of present-day communities and ecosystems resembling those reconstructed from the fossil record can help improve our understanding of historical distribution patterns and species composition of past communities. Here, we use a unique data set of 570 plots explored for vascular plant and 315 for land-snail assemblages located along a 650-km-long transect running across a steep climatic gradient in the Russian Altai Mountains and their foothills in southern Siberia. We analysed climatic and habitat requirements of modern populations for eight land-snail and 16 vascular plant species that are considered characteristic of the full-glacial environment of central Europe based on (i) fossil evidence from loess deposits (snails) or (ii) refugial patterns of their modern distribu- tions (plants). The analysis yielded consistent predictions of the full-glacial central European climate derived from both snail and plant populations. We found that the distribution of these 24 species was limited to the areas with mean annual temperature varying from À6.7 to 3.4 °C (median À2.5 °C) and with total annual precipitation vary- ing from 137 to 593 mm (median 283 mm). -

A portion of this remnant, composed of wetland, grassland and forest, is protected by the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) in southern Manitoba. This heterogene- ous ecosystem has rich biodiversity; however, gastropods have not been surveyed in Canada’s tall grass prairie. We studied gastropods in Prairie, Wet Meadow, Forest, and Wet Forest habitats of the Manitoba Tall Grass Prairie Preserve that vary with respect to land management practices (prescribed burning, grazing by cattle). Gastropod community composition was unique in the Prairie where mounds of grass litter form permanently moist cavities harbouring aquatic species, while dry-habitat species colonized the upper parts of these mounds. Gastropod communities in Prairie habitats were negatively affected by grazing and burning that occurred in the five years prior to our survey. -

It is a treeless alkaline fen located close to the village of Czarny Dunajec (Nowy Targ region, S. Poland). The site is the north-western extension of the Western Carpathian distribution of the species, being more than 30 km away from the previ- ously known Polish site near Niedzica village and also from its known sites in Slovakia. The first recent record of Pupilla pratensis (Clessin) in Poland was found in the north-easternmost part of Poland close to the border with Lithuania, in the vicinity of the village of Rowele. It is an extension of the species’ distribution in NW. Europe and also the easternmost known record of this taxon. Both species are exclusive inhabitants of calcareous fens and fen meadows, highly endangered and mostly isolated, and deserve attention of nature conservation agen- cies. They seem to be very rare in Poland, because no further population was documented at 25 suitable alkaline fen sites sampled mainly in 2010 and 2011 across the southern and eastern part of Poland. Introduction Invertebrates comprise 99% of the species on earth (Ponder and Lunney 1999). Despite the fact that most animals lack a backbone, far less is known about these animals compared to their vertebrate counterparts. Non-marine mollusks are a diverse group of invertebrates composed of terrestrial snails, and freshwater snails and bivalves. Non-marine mollusks are one of the most critically impaired groups of animals on earth (Lydeard et al. 2004). Unfortunately, the highest number of recorded extinctions occurred within the mollusk group. About 24,000 terrestrial mollusks are described, and an estimated 11,000 to 40,000 terrestrial mollusks are currently undescribed (Lydeard et al. 2004). Of the described species, 1,222 (5%) were on the 2002 International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species (www.redlist.org; Lydeard et al. 2004). Land snails have unique life history traits and play an important role in the ecosystem. Land snails generally live in moist microhabitats on the landscape, such as by streams, springs and on north-facing slopes. Snails require moisture to live, because their tissues can be 50% water by weight (Burch and Pearce 1990). -

STEFAN MENG & MATTHIAS H. HOFFMANN *) Abstract: LOŽEK (1986) is of the opinion that Pupilla loessica has been found recently in Central Asia. The aim of this study is to provide some initial, concrete contributions to the discussion of this subject. It should be understood as a basis for further investigations. During recent visits on site between 1995 and 2006 in Central Asia in the Russian Altay, in Northern Mongolia, in the Baikal region and in the Tien Shan, numerous recent malacocenoses were examined. In many places evidence was found of a form of Pupilla which had not previously been described from this region; its shell morphology cannot be distinguished from Pupilla loessica. Its distribution is concentrated in the strongly continental Khrebet Saylyugem in the South Eastern Altay. The probability of the occurrence of Pupilla loessica in Central Asia is supported, apart from the shell morphology criteria, by the preference of this species for more continental types of habitat with average annual temperatures markedly below 0° C and the corresponding accompanying fauna adapted to the cold, including e.g. Columella columella, Vertigo genesii, Vallonia tenuilabris, etc., which make these fauna easily comparable to the Pleistocene glacial associations of the Central European region.
