WELCOME Hello and Welcome to the 2021 Jackie Fairweather Memorial , presented by , Triathlon ACT and the Triathlon Clubs of ACT.

This event is in its second year on the calendar, after being cancelled in the 2019/20 season, and is incorporating the ACT Sprint Championships as well as the Super Sprint event. As much as we are able with the easing of border restrictions, we welcome many athletes from across Australia.

This is going to be very exciting with courses that are scenic, fun, challenging and a fantastic opportunity for our athletes and coaches to test themselves, both physically and mentally. We want to ensure you have the best experience possible, so please read this Guide before you arrive at the event.

The event schedule has potential to change in the event of cancellations / bad weather /withdrawals, etc. All athletes are advised to stay at the event site as the Race starts will not be held for athletes who have left the venue.

We look forward to watching you race and wish you all the best at this event. If you have any questions at the event, please do not hesitate to ask one of the Triathlon ACT staff.

WEATHER We are having quite a wet summer so far! Temperatures have been in the mid to high 20’s with a fair amount of rain predicted for the next couple of weeks. Please check the weather forecast closer to the event and prepare clothing, etc. accordingly.

Venue Travel

You can access Black Mountain Peninsula via Clunes Ross Street (from the North), Lady Denman Drive (from the South/West) and Parkes Way from the East.

Road Closures

Please note that the Road Closures will take effect on Black Mountain Peninsula from 5:30am to 10:15am (Sunday) on the following roads: For the Age Group Draft Legal Sprint Race • Lady Denman Drive between Cotter Road and Parkes Way down ramp • Garryowen Drive and John Gordon Close from Lady Denman Drive For the Super Sprint Race • Lady Denman Drive between Parkes Way down ramp and Burrunju Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Culture Centre • Garryowen Drive and John Gordon Close from Lady Denman Drive

Parking

Parking is available as per the Event Parking Plan available on the Event website. Please take note of the areas where you can and cannot park and arrive before the road closure takes effect at 5:30am.

Food

Here’s the Coffee will be onsite selling coffee and drinks. Please note that there are no cafes or restaurants within a 4km drive or a 3km walk of the race site.

EVENT SAFETY FOR ATHLETES AND SPECTATORS It is important for athletes and spectators to be aware of the race courses and transition zones to ensure races are not disrupted and athlete performance is not hindered. Start areas, Transition and the Finish chute are STRICTLY for athletes ONLY. Please obey all signage and instructions from event staff and Officials. A full road closure is in place for the event.

During the Race:  Do not run or ride beside an athlete on course as this will result in disqualification  Do not use permanent paint or crayons on the road or footpaths  Do cheer for athletes, but do not provide them any outside assistance  Do not accept any equipment or clothing from an athlete as this will result in disqualification  Please only cross the course in designated spectator crossing zones OR only when it safe to do so

 Please obey all instructions from Police, Traffic Management, Staff, Technical Officials and event volunteers  The use of drones is not permitted at 2021 Jackie Fairweather Memorial Triathlon, unless you have approval from the Event Manager. Please contact the TACT Office at [email protected] if you would like to seek approval. According to Civil Aviation Safety Authority regulations, you must not fly any remote-controlled aeroplanes/ helicopters or drones over populous beaches, parks or sports ovals when they are in use. Therefore, the use of drones during the event may result in an unsafe operations complaint being lodged with the Civil Aviation Safety Authority.

BIKE MECHANIC There will be no bike mechanic supplied on Sunday at the race venue.

There are a number of cycle shops around town and maybe for you to do walk in cycle checks (at your own expense) on Friday 19th – some shops are listed below. It is advised that you phone ahead to book your appointment. Depending on demand from other cyclists, you may have to wait, so allow a bit of extra time, just in case.

THE EVENT Sprint (Draft-Legal) – 750m Swim / 19.2km Cycle / 5km Run The Draft Legal Sprint distance event on Sunday 21st February 2021 is an ACT Sprint Triathlon Championships and a Triathlon Australia ITU World Sprint Triathlon Championships Qualifying Race (WQE) for the 2021 ITU World Sprint Championships.

Supersprint (non-Draft) – 200m Swim / 10km Cycle / 2km Run The Supersprint distance is a non-drafting event.

EVENT FORMAT There are 2 events: Sprint (Sunday AM)  750m Swim (1 lap) / 19.2km Cycle (1 lap) / 5km Run (2 laps)  The Bike leg is Draft Legal.  Only traditional drop handlebars are permitted, the handlebars must be plugged and Clip-ons are not allowed.

Supersprint (Sunday AM)  200m Swim (1 lap) / 10km Cycle (2 laps) / 2km Run (1lap)  The bike leg is Non-Drafting.

CUT OFF TIMES For the Draft Legal Age Group Sprint distance triathlon of 750m swim, 19.2km bike and 5km run the TOTAL accumulated cut off time is 2hours 15mins. That is:  Swim cut off is 30 minutes – this is taken from the start of your wave and you then have 30mins to complete the swim  Bike cut off is 1 hour – for you to complete the bike leg only  Run cut off is 45 minutes – for you to complete the run leg only. If you are unable to complete your race within the allocated timeframe, you will be asked to leave the course and your result will be listed as DNF (Did Not Finish). For the Supersprint (non-Drafting) event there are no Cut Off Times.

REGISTRATION & RACE PACK PICKUP Please bring photo ID and your TA membership card, if you are a member, to Registration and Race Pack Pickup.

Race Packs will need to be collected from: The Triathlon ACT office which is located at 22 King Street, Deakin  Friday 19th February between 12noon – 4pm. OR Pickup from the Athletes Services desk at Black Mountain Peninsula – Race Site  Saturday 20th February between 3pm – 6pm.

In your Race Pack, you will receive a swim cap, bike/helmet stickers and timing chip. You will NOT be provided with tattoos – for Race Day please mark both upper arms with your race number. Numbers should be written in large print, vertically downward using a thick dark permanent marker. Due to COVID regulations it is encouraged that you bring your own marker pens.

You will need to sign for the collection of your Race Pack and tick you have read the following:  Race Briefing  Technical Briefing  Athletes Guide  Race Competition Rules to ensure you know the rules around uniforms and equipment before the event.

If you lose your timing chip after collecting it at Race Pack Pickup then let us know at the Athlete Services desk at Race Site so that we can arrange a replacement for you. Please note that there is a charge of $70.00 for unreturned timing chips.

There will not be any Race Pack collection on race morning. For further details please check the website for the current Event Schedule and in Event newsletters in the lead up to the event. If you have special circumstances that mean you cannot collect your race pack, please contact the Office at [email protected] to arrange an alternative.

CONTINGENCY PLAN If we are faced with the unfortunate situation to cancel the swim due to water quality or safety reasons, then the following contingency plan will come into action: • Sprint Triathlon – becomes a with the first segment becoming a 2.5km run to replace the swim. • Supersprint Triathlon – becomes a duathlon with the first segment becoming an 800m run to replace the swim.

TRANSITION CHECK-IN Compulsory bike check-in will take place before you enter transition on Sunday morning. It will occur on the east side of Transition where the Bike Entry is located after the Dismount Line. After you have setup you will then exit by the Bike Exit – west side of Transition.

Please prepare before you arrive for bike check-in.

Please have your helmet on and done up, your Helmet and Bike stickers on your bike and helmet, and Race Numbers are marked on both upper arms – see diagram above. Also, your timing chip is to be worn on your left ankle for safety reasons.

During Bike Check-in the Technical Official will check your bike and helmet to ensure they are compliant. Please read the Race Rules section clearly to ensure you know the rules regarding the right equipment for your event.

Each athlete is allocated a numbered spot on the rack in transition. Please rack your bike over your Numbered Tag either by the handlebars or the seat. All your equipment must be placed beside your bike before the race and any equipment discarded in the race must be placed in the same area. All Bags ae to be removed from the Transition area.

Remember, it is your responsibility to have your bike serviced and checked prior to Race Day and that you have checked that all parts of your bike are correctly tightened and in good working order. And that includes that your handlebars are plugged.

RACE BRIEFINGS Race Briefings are compulsory for all athletes whether they are written and/ or verbal.

On the Event Website you will find the written Event Briefing and the Technical Briefing. Please read both of these as they contain important and relevant information for you to have a safe and fair race. Also having these available on the Event Website is to minimise the need for athletes to gather in a large group before their race therefore COVID safe.

Please arrive at least 10 minutes before your scheduled Wave Race Start for a quick briefing and any updates.

TIMING This event will be fully timed and as the athlete, you must: • Ensure your timing chip is securely fastened around your left ankle at all times • Ensure you cross the timing mat where allocated • Return your timing chip after your race at the collection bucket immediately after you cross the finish line • Do not lose your timing chip. There may be a replacement fee for any lost/damaged bands. If you lose your timing chip after collecting it from your Race Pack Pickup then let us know at the Athlete Services desk at Race Site so that we can arrange a replacement for you. Please note that there is a charge of $70.00 for unreturned timing chips.

MEDICAL SERVICES Medical Services will be available at the venue during the competition hours. Mobile Medical personnel will be available throughout competition times. A Medical tent will be provided on site at near the finish area. Athletes should ensure that they have appropriate medical insurance.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION Rules

World Triathlon (ITU) and Triathlon Australia (TA) rules apply for Draft Legal events at the 2021 Jackie Fairweather Memorial Triathlon. This includes: bicycle, wheels (UCI approved), handle bar and wetsuit restrictions. It is the athlete and coach’s responsibility to know, understand and adhere to the ITU and TA Draft Legal Rules. Protest & Appeals

Standard procedures will be followed according to the TA Race Competition Rules.

Equipment

For Draft Legal Age Group Sprint athletes please check the Draft-Legal Competitor Information Sheet on the Event Website. This Information advises you of the approved equipment for Draft Legal Racing.

The Non-standard wheel lists below are the current UCI approved, which apply to the 2021 Jackie Fairweather Memorial Triathlon. Uniforms

For all athletes (Draft Legal and Super Sprint) that are competing in the 2021 Jackie Fairweather Memorial Triathlon you must wear a race suit that complies with the definition of a “Race Suit” as outline in Appendix A of the TA Race Competition Rules. Appendix A: Definition of a Race Suit Competitors may wear any type of race suit (comprising of 100% textile material) throughout the race except where detailed below: a. During the swim segment the race suit must not cover hands or feet, and must not contain any material which assists in buoyancy, such as polyurethane or neoprene. b. During the bike and run segments, the race suit must cover the torso. If front zipper is attached it may be undone but must be connected at the bottom at all times.

Penalty Box Location

The Penalty Box will be positioned near the Dismount Line on the Bike leg. Run course penalties will be served on the spot as either a Warning or Time Penalty. Rubbish

Triathlon ACT is committed to minimising environmental impact on the host community, so we request that all athletes collect and discard their own rubbish in the bins provided throughout the event site. There will be a designated rubbish zone at the aid station. Athletes risk disqualification if they discard any item outside these designated zones.

RACE COURSE NOTES Draft Legal Age Group For the Draft Legal Age Group Sprint race the course is very scenic, challenging, skill developing and fun. Course maps are available on the Event Website. SWIM COURSE The Swim starts in the closed off swim area near the Aqua Park with a knee or waist deep start and is a 1x lap 750m swim. Swim 220m towards the first swim buoy turn 90 degrees to your right, 185m North towards Black Mountain Telstra Tower, turn 90 degrees to your right and swim 60m towards Black Mountain Peninsula, turn 90 degrees to your right and swim 185m South and then make a 110 degree left hand turn and swim 100m into the swim exit. The swim exit is gradual sand/silt that is level with the grass exit. BIKE COURSE The Bike Course is a 1 lap 19.2km loop. Mount your bike after the Mount Line at the John Cardiff Close carpark and ride up to Garryowen Drive. Turn left and ride all the way to Lady Denman Drive, turn left and continue on Lady Denman Drive all the way out to Cotter Road. Do a 180 degree turn and continue back along Lady Denman Drive and then turn left onto Forest Drive. Ride up into the National Arboretum. Once entering the gates make a left turn and ride clockwise around the National Arboretum Forest Drive Loop. Be aware of the DESCENT – there are some steep sections. As you descend from Dairy Farmer Hill and pass the Main Building, make a left turn up Himalayan Cedar Road. Continue to the end and return back to Forest Drive. Make a left-hand turn and

12 Athletes’ Guide | Age Group continue down until you reach Lady Denman Drive. Make a left turn onto Lady Denman Drive and ride until just before the medium strip at the Lady Denman Drive/ Parkes Way Intersection. Do a 180 degree turn and return to the entrance of Black Mountain Peninsula. Turn left into Black Mountain Peninsula, ride to the end of Garryowen Drive and dismount your bike before the Dismount Line and head into Transition 2.

Remember to always keep left at all times while on the bike course, unless you are overtaking, as there will be other vehicles on the roads, such as, motorbikes with Technical Officials and Mobile Medical.

RUN COURSE The Run Course is a 5km Run (2 laps). Remember you must stay on the sealed pavement during the entire run except where indicated. Exit transition and turn left onto the cycle pathway. Continue 1.25km along the cycle pathway around the bottom of Black Mountain peninsula through the lookout carpark and towards the run turnaround near the entrance of Black Mountain Peninsula. Do a 180 degree turn and return back to the 2nd lap turnaround near run start. Repeat for a second time. As you approach the transition area, turn into the finish chute and enjoy your achievement as you cross the finish line.

Supersprint For the Supersprint race the course can be challenging and fun at the same time. Course maps are available on the Event Website. SWIM COURSE SWIM – 200m 1 lap of 200m The Swim is 1 lap of 200m swimming in a clock-wise direction around the course. Swim 85m out to buoy #1, turn right 90 degrees, 30m across to Buoy #2, turn right 90 degrees then 85m to Swim Exit.

BIKE COURSE The bike leg is 2 laps of a 5km undulating course. Mount your bike after crossing the Mount Line and keep left while heading up John Cardiff Close and turn left onto Garryowen Drive. Turn left onto Lady Denman Drive and ride out to the carpark at the end of the Rowing Course. Complete a 180 degree turn and return back the same way. Continue past the entrance of Black Mountain Peninsula. Turnaround prior to the traffic island prior to Parkes Way and return to the entrance of Black Mountain Peninsula. Turn left onto Garryowen Drive and ride to the southern tip around the roundabout. Then continue back up Garryowen Drive and complete the same course 1 more time. At the end of the 2nd lap, as you round the roundabout at the bottom of Garryowen Drive, dismount your bike before the Dismount Line and head into Transition 2.

RUN COURSE The run is one lap of an undulating 2km out-and-back course (approximately 1km out and 1km back). Exit Transition out the bottom corner closest to the lake. Turn left onto the shared bike pathway and run 1km down and around the bottom of Black Mountain Peninsula. Make a 180 degree turn (keeping the cone on your right) and return along the shared cycle pathway. As you approach the transition area, turn into the finish chute and enjoy your achievement as you cross the finish line.

POST RACE INFORMATION Finish line

The Finish chute is STRICTLY for athletes ONLY – no family members can join you. Please place your timing chip into the Chip Bin at the finish line once you have completed your event.

Recovery Area and Run Aid Station

Endurance drink and water will be available at the Run Aid Station and in the Recovery Area near the Athlete Services Tent. Please discard all plastic cups in the bins provided or at the Run Aid Station. The Recovery Area and the Run Aid Station are self-serve.

Bike and Gear Collection

For bike collection announcements will be made when this will start and how you enter and exit transition. For the Draft Legal Age Group Sprint athletes Bike Check out will start at approximately 08:30am. For the Super Sprint athletes Bike Check out will start at approximately 09:30am or after the last athlete has exited transition for the Run leg.

Results & Presentations

Results will be posted next to the Athlete Services Tent after each race once they have been verified by the Race Referee. Additionally, the Results will be uploaded to the TACT’s official website https://www.triathlon.org.au/State_Associations/ACT/ACT_Home.htm Prizemoney will be handed out on the day following confirmation of the results and an announcement will be made. TACT will also advise about the collection of any Medals for placegetters and this information will be made available on TACT’s official website.
