Letter to the Editor

Heading – “For the record”

In my book review of Peter Snell page 17 last issue, I typed in 1960 instead of 1964 for Snell’s World mile Record of 3m54.1s which beat the 1958 record of Herb Elliott of 3m54.54.

Snell first broke that time in NZ on 27 January 1962 with 3m54.4s.

Don Fraser - Veteran Athletics

Don Fraser has been a champion masters athlete since 1984.

He has recently turned 70. At the masters Athletics Championships held between Thursday 12 and Saturday 14 February, Don set an amazing six new M70 ACT Records - in the 80m hurdles, 300m hurdles, long jump, triple jump, pole vault and javelin.

At the Australian Masters Decathlon Championships in Brisbane, 28 February - 1 March, Don set a new Australian record for this gruelling event with 6762 points. Not sure if you are in with a chance! Plug your age into the relevant equation below and get an estimate of the minimum monthly handicap group that an age buster of your age and gender is likely to be in.

Males: Handicap Group = 91 - 1.087 x Your Age Females: Handicap Group = 82 - 1.075 x Your Age

The above equations assume a course difficulty factor of 1.15. This is probably on the high side so if your handicap is a couple of groups short of the estimate don't throw in the towel. Not only is this a great event by any measure the unique thing about it is that its goal actually gets easier the older you get – how often does that happen – never in my experience!

This year sees the introduction of an 'over 60s' category so if that's you you could not only become an Age Buster but also be immortalised as an inaugural winner in the new category. Report on NSW Masters Athletics Championships (28-29 March 2009)
