This study was conducted to describe the snapper of the family Lutjanidae from the Spermonde Archipelago, South Sulawesi. Spe- cimens were collected in Rajawali and Paotere Fish Landing Port Makassar, South Sulawesi from November 2005 to August 2009. The result showed that there was 42 species representing eight genera of family Lutjanidae inhabiting the area were examined and identified: Aphareus furca, A. rutilans, Aprion virescens, Etelis carbunculus, E. radiosus, Lut- janus argentimaculatus, L. bengalensis, L. biguttatus, L. bohar, L. boutton, L. carponotatus, L. decussatus, L. fulvus, L. sebae, L. fulviflamma, L. fuscescens. L. johnii, L. kasmira, L. gibbus, L. lemniscatus, L. lunulatus, L. lutjanus, L. mala- baricus, L. monostigma, L. quinquelineatus, L. rivulatus, L. russelli, L. sebae, L. timorensis, L. vitta, Macolor macularis, M. niger, Paracaesio kusakarii, Pristipomoides argyrogrammicus, P. auricilla, P. filamentosus, P. flavipinnis, P. mul- tidens, P. typus, P. zonatus, Symphorichthys spilurus, S. nematophorus. FAO names: En - Goldflag jobfish; Fr - Colas drapeau; Sp - Panchito abanderado. Diagnostic characters: Body elongate, laterally compressed. Nostrils on each side of snout close together. Jaws about equal or lower jaw protruding slightly. Premaxillae protrusible. Maxilla extending to vertical through anterior part of eye or slightly beyond. Upper and lower jaws both with an outer row of conical and canine teeth and an inner band of villiform teeth; vomer and palatines with teeth, those on vomer in triangular patch; no teeth on tongue. Maxilla without scales or longitudinal ridges. Interorbital region flattened. First gill arch with 8 to 11 gill rakers on upper limb, 17 to 21 on lower limb (total 27 to 32). Dorsal fin continuous, not deeply incised near junction of spinous and soft portions. Last soft ray of both dorsal and anal fins well produced, longer than next to last ray. Caudal fin forked. Pectoral fins long, equal to or somewhat shorter than head length. Dorsal fin with X spines and 11 soft rays. Anal fin with III spines and 8 soft rays. Pectoral-fin rays 15 or 16. Membranes of dorsal and anal fins without scales. Tubed lateral-line scales 67 to 74. Colour: body purplish or brownish violet; sides with numerous yellow spots or faint yellow chevron-shaped bands; dorsal fin yellowish to yellowish brown; upper lobe of caudal fin yellow. Sexual dichromatism: males over 27 cm (fork length) with much yellow on lower lobe of caudal fin, usually forming a distinct blotch; females with or without yellowish colour on lower lobe of caudal fin, but if yellow present, not forming a distinct blotch. -

A Lexicographical Introduction and Inventory of Pendau * Fish Names Phil Quick SIL International [email protected] ABSTRACT This paper introduces the first inventory of fish names in Pendau (Tolitoli language group in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia). Among other purposes this paper provides a documentation of about 290 Pendau fish names (in an appended dictionary format), provides other Sulawesi specialists with comparative data, provides field linguists with an outline of some of the issues involved in descriptive documentation of flora and fauna, and provides new data for historical and comparative linguists. Topics covered in this paper are presented in such a way as to help researchers evaluate either the entire inventory of fish names or particular entries of interest. 1. INTRODUCTION This paper introduces the first inventory of fish names in Pendau (Tomini-Tolitoli language group in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia). The purpose of this portion of the paper is to focus on identifying fish names and the total number of fish names possible in a language, understanding the syntax used for binomial names, understanding some of the innovations and folk taxonomy employed, highlight those fish names that begin with one of the two formatives si and ’ali, as in sinobulung ‘various parrotfish species’ and ’alibambang ‘various butterflyfish species’, various bannerfish species, and various angelfish species’, and finally discuss the potential for discovering new species. The identification of fish names and other flora and fauna in a language is not a simple task. This paper also reviews the problems and challenges involved in providing a quality inventory that can be used by other researchers. -

Vanhove1,2,3,6 and Simona Georgieva7 Abstract Background: Lake Tanganyika is considered a biodiversity hotspot with exceptional species richness and level of endemism. Given the global importance of the lake in the feld of evolutionary biology, the understudied status of its parasite fauna is surprising with a single digenean species reported to date. Although the most famous group within the lake’s fsh fauna are cichlids, the pelagic zone is occupied mainly by endemic species of clupeids (Actinop- terygii: Clupeidae) and lates perches (Actinopterygii: Latidae, Lates Cuvier), which are an important commercial source for local fsheries. In this study, we focused on the lake’s four lates perches and targeted their thus far unexplored endoparasitic digenean fauna. Methods: A total of 85 lates perches from four localities in Lake Tanganyika were examined. Cryptogonimid dige- neans were studied by means of morphological and molecular characterisation. Partial sequences of the nuclear 28S rRNA gene and the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) gene were sequenced for a representa- tive subset of the specimens recovered. Phylogenetic analyses were conducted at the family level under Bayesian inference. Results: Our integrative approach revealed the presence of six species within the family Cryptogonimidae Ward, 1917. Three out of the four species of Lates were found to be infected with at least one cryptogonimid species. -

This species has not previously been recorded from Korea. L. ophuysenii is very similar to Lutjanus vitta. But several morphological characteristics distinguish the two species, including the number of lateral line scales (46–49 scales in L. ophuysenii;49–52 scales in L. vitta), a black spot in the middle part of the longitudinal stripe (present in L. ophuysenii; absent in L. vitta), and the absence of a scale on posterior end of the preopercle in L. ophuysenii (present in L. vitta).
