The project was undertaken as an initiative of the National Park Service Chesapeake Bay office, which supports and manages the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail. One of the goals of the Captain John Smith Trail is to interpret Native life in the Middle Atlantic in the early years of colonization by Europeans. The Indigenous Cultural Landscape (ICL) concept, developed as an important tool for identifying Native landscapes, has been incorporated into the Smith Trail’s Comprehensive Management Plan in an effort to identify Native communities along the trail as they existed in the early17th century and as they exist today. Identifying ICLs along the Smith Trail serves land and cultural conservation, education, historic preservation, and economic development goals. Identifying ICLs empowers descendant indigenous communities to participate fully in achieving these goals. -

The GWMP encompasses some 7,428 acres in Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia. For reasons that will later be explained, a small part of this acreage is not administered by its superintendent, and a greater amount of land formerly within GWMP now lies within another national park unit. Some of the GWMP acreage the superintendent administers is commonly known by other names, like Great Falls Park in Virginia and Glen Echo Park in Maryland. While most national park units may be characterized as predominantly natural, historical, or recreational, GWMP comprises such a diverse array of natural, historic, and recreational resources that it defies any such categorization. Further complicating matters, GWMP's superintendent also administers four other areas classed as discrete national park units-Arlington House, The Robert E. -

The Oconee Group is formally recognized in the Savannah River area and four South Carolina Formations not previously used in Georgia by the Georgia Geologic Survey are recognized in eastern Burke County. The Still Branch Sand is a new formation and the two new members are the Bennock Millpond Sand Member of the Still Branch Sand and the Blue Bluff Member of the Lisbon Formation. The four South Carolina formations recognized in eastern Burke CountY include the Steel Creek Formation and Snapp Formation of the Oconee Group, the Black Mingo Formation (undifferentiated), and the Congaree Formation. The Congaree Formation and Still Branch Sand are considered to be lithostratigraphic components of the Claiborne Group. -
