This compilation forms the data base for a series of studies published, in press or in preparation (Buzas, £t_ al. , 1982; Koch and Sohl, in press). The Haustator bilira Assemblage Zone was proposed by Sohl (1977) and traced through Late Cretaceous rocks of the Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plains from New Jersey to Texas (Owens, et_jil_., 1977; Sohl and Smith, 1980). The base of the zone occurs above the base of the foraminiferid Globotruncana gansseri subzone of Pessagno (1967) and includes all subsequent younger Cretaceous deposits on the Coastal Plains (Figure 2). -

SAUL Invertebrate Paleontology, Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, 900 Exposition Boulevard, Los Angeles, California 90007, USA Abstract. Three new species of Praesargana, P. argentea, P. confraga, and P. kennedyi, are the first sarganines reported from southern California. These rare muricacean gastropods of late Turonian age occur in the Baker Canyon Sandstone Member and the overlying lower part of the Holz Shale Member of the Ladd Formation in the Santa Ana Mountains, Orange County, California. Inclusion of P. argentea and P. kennedyi in Praesargana broadens the concept of the genus to include species that have spiny sculpture, and species that lack a strong axial component to the sculpture. One species of Praesargana, P. condoni (White, 1889), was previously known from the Turonian of northern California. This threefold increase in diversity in a more southern fauna suggests that Praesargana may be indicative of a warm- temperate to tropical climate. Sarganinae resemble predaceous Muricidae rather than ciliary-feeding Trichotropidae, but have a fold on the columella and a protoconch more like that of Pyropsinae. For these reasons, despite recent assignments to other families, Sarganinae are included in the family Tudiclidae of the Muricacea. Schweitzer** *Department of Geology, Kent State University, Kent, OH 44240, USA <[email protected]> **Department of Geology, Kent State University at Stark, North Canton, OH 44720, USA <[email protected]> Abstract An extremely large spider crab from Miocene deposits of the St. Marys Formation, Calvert County, Maryland, is referred to Libinia Leach, 1815, as a new species, L. amplissimus. Although severely crushed, the specimen preserves a nearly complete carapace and several of the pereiopods, and it is nearly twice the maximum size of its extant congenors. Key words: Decapoda, Brachyura, Epialtidae, Miocene, Maryland, USA Introduction our understanding of Miocene decapods. The purpose of this work is to name and describe the fossil. The Miocene rocks exposed along the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland are known worldwide as yielding an enormous Systematic Paleontology variety of fossils, including molluscs, bryozoans, echinoderms, ostracods, and vertebrates. Indeed, the first fossil reported and Infraorder Brachyura Linnaeus, 1758 illustrated from North America was Ecphora quadricostata Section Eubrachyura de Saint Laurent, 1980 (Say, 1824). An unnamed specimen readily referable to the Superfamily Majoidea Samouelle, 1819 species was illustrated by Martin Lister in 1685 (fide Shattuck, Family Epialtidae MacLeay, 1838 1904).
