FUEL ECONOMY Carmakers, don’t pick a fight with California News flash: The Obama- era fuel-economy standards would add $875 to the aver- age price of a new vehicle. But proposed border taxes or other tariffs on Mexican imports would add $2,000. President Donald Trump wants a weaker mandate on mileage, and he also wants the tariffs. Digest those numbers when assessing Trump’s Froma Harrop claim to be helping U.S. carmakers control their man- ufacturing costs. As for that $875 for new technology, drivers would save three times as much at the pump over the lifetime of the vehicle. Trump has ordered a review of the rule that new cars and light trucks must achieve a real-world aver- age of 36 miles per gallon, up from today’s 25 miles, by 2025. It’s true that lower gas prices have spurred demand for larger vehicles that burn more fuel, but no TRADE POLICY one seriously argues that the tighter standards are not attainable. Rather, this would seem part and parcel of Trump’s ‘Buy American. Hire American’ general contempt for environmental protections — especially any related to climate change. Transporta- tion is the largest source of planet-warming gases in is dangerous nonsense the U.S. Trump says this deregulation is all about the economy and jobs. “We don’t have a House chief strategist Steve Bannon said not long ago A warming climate, meanwhile, could put Southern level playing field for in a jumbled explanation of economic nationalism, and much of the East and Gulf coasts under our workers,” President “a country is more than an economy. PARIS — A gunman opened fire on police on Paris’ iconic Champs-Elysees boulevard Thurs- day night, killing one officer and wounding three people before police shot and killed him. The Is- lamic State group quickly claimed responsibility for the attack, which hit just three days before a tense presidential election. Security already has been a dominant theme in the campaign, and the violence on the spar- kling avenue threatened to weigh on voters’ deci- sions. Candidates canceled or rescheduled final campaign events ahead of Sunday’s first round vote. Investigators searched a home early Friday in an eastern suburb of Paris believed linked to the attack. A police document obtained by The As- sociated Press identifies the address searched in the town of Chelles as the family home of Karim Cheurfi, a 39-year-old with a criminal record.
