  • Aristotle's Explanation for the Value of the External Goods Ian Halim
Aristotle’s Explanation for the Value of the External Goods Ian Halim Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2012 © 2011 Ian Halim All rights reserved ABSTRACT Aristotle’s Explanation for the Value of the External Goods Ian Halim An interpretation of how Aristotle explains the value of worldly goods within the terms of his ethical theory in the Nicomachean Ethics . Aristotle claims that to live in a worthwhile and subjectively satisfying way—that is, to achieve eudaimonia —one needs such things as honor, wealth, friends, and political power. He groups these things together as the external goods, since they are all external in a spatial sense from the perspective of any given person. It is clear that people almost always attach value to such things, but it is less clear why Aristotle should. My aim is to explain why Aristotle regards these things as important, and—in a more formal sense—how far his definition of eudaimonia explains their value. On Aristotle’s formal theory, the external goods ought to gain value through some relation to excellent rational activity, but fleshing out the details of this relation raises problems. Chapter 2 assesses Aristotle’s formal argument for the value of such goods at NE I.1099a31-b8, chapter 1 develops an account of Aristotle’s method in order to support this assessment, and chapter 3 considers the kinds of explanations for the value of the external goods available to Aristotle in terms of his account of action.

  • The Failure of the American Dream in “The Great Gatsby”- Fitzgerald
ISSN 2414-8385 (Online) European Journal of September-December 2017 ISSN 2414-8377 (Print Multidisciplinary Studies Volume 2, Issue 7 The Failure of the American Dream in “The Great Gatsby”- Fitzgerald Zamira Hodo “Hena e Plote” Beder University Abstract The American Dream is one of the most important issues, which has drawn the attention of literary criticism through many years. It represents the ideals of a nation: equality, liberty, pursuit of happiness and democracy; ideals that have been understood in different ways by people. The real values related to these ideals changed and deviated from what it was meant into the enormous desire and greed for wealth and power. Fitzgerald tried to reveal that social discrimination is present and no one is treated as equal to others. The following research over the novel “The Great Gatsby” demonstrates how the dream cannot be successful because of the way it is misunderstood by the society and people’s materialism view of modern life. The characters and their attitudes through the chronology of the story are the embodiment of disappointment and the lack of moral values in the pursuance of a dream. Qualitative research used in this study aims to give a clear image and a deep analysis of the novel’s major themes, symbols, the period of writing, author’s life, various perspectives of the American Dream and its failure. We expect this thesis to be a good guide for further readings and projects with an explicit goal that the achievement of a dream does not necessarily requires the loss of the self and an excessive significance to what ruins the personal and the others future.

ANXIETY IN DANIELLE STEEL'S ZOYA: A PSYCHOANALYTIC APPROACH RESEARCH PAPER Submitted as a Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for Getting Bachelor Degree of E ducation in English Department by MILA ARY HERMAWATI A 320 050 116 ENGLISH DEPARTMENT SCHOOL OF TEACHER TRAINING AND EDUCATION MUHAMMADIYAH UNIVERSITY OF SURAKARTA 2009 1 CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Background of the Study Anxiety is a state of psychic distress (White and Watt, 1948:348). The physical, environmental and social factors cause anxiety. It shows our unhappiness, irritability and dissatisfaction. Each person who has post traumatic stress, panic and depression produces strong anxiety reactions. Such a feeling of distress and helplessness is apparent in the birth trauma. All of these experiences lead to increase tension and apprehension. Anxiety is the central problem in these disorders. The onset of anxiety disorders ranges from 16 to 40 years of age (White and Watt, 1948:190). The people who have anxiety disorders get heart disturbance such a chest pain, palpitations and breathlessness. So, it is not surprising that an estimated 10 percent of people suffer from anxiety disorders. The sufferers may also experience panic attack, phobias, obsessions, and compulsions. Because anxiety disorders are mild in comparison with other abnormal behaviors, they are often labeled neurotic. According to Adler, "neurosis is the natural, logical development of an individual who is comparatively inactive, filled with a personal, egocentric striving for superiority and is therefore retarded in the development of his social interest" (Hjelle and Zieglar, 1992:164). But according to Freud, "anxiety is the central place in the theory of neurosis" (White and Watt, 1948:32).
