Australia's Number One Auto Legend Found in Coober Pedy Outback Communities Newspaper Est 1982 ISSN 1833-1831 Tel: 08 86725 920 http://cooberpedyregionaltimes.wordpress.com Thursday 26 April 2012 AUSTRALIA’S NUMBER ONE AUTO LEGEND FOUND IN COOBER PEDY The Grand Prize winner of a newly launched competition JUST AUTO LEGENDS is local Coober Pedy resident, Dave Sawyers or Swampy as he is fondly known by his mates. Swampy, a self-employed electrician, entered into the competition online with video evidence of his life’s passion for automobiles, their parts and associated uses. As a consequence he takes home a $6,000 Sidchrome tool kit, and he will appear on the cover of JUST Cars – May 2012 edition. Living underground in Coober Pedy, Swampys auto lair takes the term “man cave” to a whole new level. Above ground, his property looks like a scene from Mad Max - a post-apocolyptic car yard with around 30 unique vehicles from old racing cars, vans converted to workshops, scooters, demolition derby cars, Fords from previous decades and a caravan. There’s a BBQ that’s tucked away in the boot of an old Kingswood, a hose reel fashioned from a Ford mag, and a Ford branded doorbell. Yes, the number one JUST AUTO LEGEND is a Ford man. Inside Swampy’s man cave is realised the full extent of this auto nut’s obsession. Everything is made from car parts. The banister on the stair case is made from prop shafts, the heater in the lounge made from an old engine block, the ambient lighting is courtesy of a traffic light, and there’s a car being rebuilt in the centre of the living room. • IN AUSTRALIA GJ Leach
    J. Adelaide Bot. Gard. 11(2): 75-100 (1989) TAXONOMIC REVISION OF BERGIA (ELATINACEAE) IN AUSTRALIA G. J. Leach Northern Territory Herbarium, Conservation Commission of the Northern Territory, P.O. Box 496, Palmerston, Northern Territory 0831 Abstract A taxonomic revision of Bergia in Australia is presented. The following ten species are recognised: B. pedicellaris, B. henshallii, B. perennis, B. barklyana, B. auriculata, B. ammannioides, B. trimera, B. occultipetala, B. diacheiron and B. pusilla. B. barklyana, B. auriculata, B. henshalld, B. occultipetala and B. diacheiron are de,scribed as new. B. perennis comprises three subspecies. The existing infrageneric classification is considered inadequate and four informal groups based on Australian taxa are suggested. B. ammannioides and B. trimera have an extra-Australian distribution; all other taxa are endemic. A key to the species and distribution maps are provided. Introduction The Elatinaceae are a small family of aquatic or wetland plants with an almost global distribution but absent from colder regions. Recent workers e.g. Cronquist (1981) have concurred with placement of the Elatinaceae in the Theales and that its closest affinity is to the Clusiaceae. Tucker (1986) provides a recent summary and detailed references to the family. Bergia is one of two genera recognised in the Elatinaceae, the other being Elatine. Both genera are recorded for Australia, Bergia now with 12 taxa recognised, and Elatine generally accepted as represented by a single species. The genus Bergia was described by Linnaeus in 1771 and commemorates Petrus Jonas Bergius (1766-1790), a Swedish pupil of Linnaeus and later professor of natural history and pharmacy at the Collegium Medicum in Stockholm.

  • The Public Will Thank You for Your Timely Article on the Absurdity of So Many of the Names with Which Our Localities in South Australia Are Humiliated
B The public will thank you for your timely article on the absurdity of so many of the names with which our localities in South Australia are humiliated. The places so handicapped are, like the unfortunate infants christened after certain celebrities, voiceless in the matter… (Register, 25 July 1900, page 7d) Baan Hill - On section 50, Hundred of Allenby; an adjacent spring gives a good supply of water all year round; derived from the Aboriginal panau - ‘ochre’. The name was given to a pastoral run by H.S. Williams and J.T. Bagot and, on 24 June 1976, proclaimed as a recreation reserve. Babbage, Mount - B.H. Babbage discovered the mountain in 1856 and named it ‘Mount Hopeful’; in the following year it was renamed by G.W. Goyder. Babbage Peninsula, situated on Lake Eyre North was, virtually, discovered by Babbage, as opposed to Lake Eyre South which was discovered by E.J. Eyre and not named until 1963. Born in London, circa 1814, he came to South Australia in the Hydaspes in 1851. A qualified engineer he was involved in the construction of the Port Adelaide railway, entered Parliament in 1857 and resigned nine months later to command a northern exploration party. By the end of six months his explorations had scarcely penetrated beyond the limits of pastoral settlement and, consequently, both the public and the government, increasingly, became impatient at his slow rate of progress. Eventually, Major P. E. Warburton was dispatched to take over the leadership and, later, it was said that, ‘Babbage’s expedition of 1858-59 was one of the most fruitful in its detailed collection of geographical information and the minuteness of its survey work.’ The Advertiser of 24 December 1858 has a satirical poem - one verse reads: Each caviller at Babbage then A fairy land, no doubt, he’d see, We’d northward send exploring Where others saw but gravel, To find new land, or water when And geographic problems he He chose artesian boring! Most surely would unravel.
