Ethnomycological Knowledge of Three Indigenous Communities of Assam, India
Indian Journal of Traditional Knowledge Vol. 17 (2), April 2018, pp 327-335 Ethnomycological knowledge of three indigenous communities of Assam, India Nepolion Borah, RL Semwal & SC Garkoti* School of Environmental Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi-110067, India E-mail: [email protected] Received 9 May 2017, revised 18 December 2017 The paper presents the ethnomycological knowledge related to identification of wild edible mushrooms of three indigenous communities, viz. Karbis, Biates and Khelmas inhabiting the South western part of Dima Hasao district of the Indian state of Assam. Across the communities, a total of 92 knowledge holders were identified through chain referrals method. Semi- directive interview and group discussion methods were employed for documentation of their knowledge. The key features of the knowledge of the studied communities were overwhelmingly identical as all of them used criteria like morphological characters, aroma, and habitat for identifying edible mushrooms. A total of 19 species of wild edible mushrooms were observed to be collected by them. Though mushroom poisoning was rare among the communities; they take certain precautions and remedies which were again broadly more or less common. To avoid poisoning, Karbis never cooked epiphytic and terrestrial mushrooms together. In case of poisoning, they used fresh or dried fruits of any of the species, viz. Garcinia lanceaefolia, Gracinia sp, Hibiscus sabdariffa and Antidesma sp as home remedy. The rich ethnomycological knowledge not only helping these communities overcome food and nutraceutical deficiencies but also contributing in income generation. In addition. I welcome the privilege of expressing my sincere appreciation to the membership of The Mycological Society of America for al- lowing me to serve them as President and Secretary-Treasurer of the Society. It has been a long and rewarding association. Finally, it is with great pleasure and gratitude that I dedicate this lecture to Dr. Alexander H. Smith, Emeritus Professor of Botany at the University of Michigan, who, over thirty years ago in a moment of weakness, agreed to accept me as a graduate student and who has spent a good portion of the ensuing years patiently explaining to me the intricacies, inconsis- tencies and attributes of the higher fungi. Thank you, Alex, for the invaluable experience and privilege of spending so many delightful and profitable hours with you. Abril de 2015 ©2015, Lamus Molina RESUMEN En el presente estudio se confirmó la asociación ectomicorrizógena entre tres especies de hongos comestibles del Área de Protección de Flora y Fauna Nevado del Toluca con plántulas de Abies religiosa. Esto se realizó mediante la síntesis de ectomicorrizas in vitro de hongos y plántulas de Abies religiosa producidas en vivero. Para confirmar que las ectomicorrizas sintetizadas correspondían a los hongos mencionados, el estudio incluyó la obtención de secuencias de ADN del micobionte presente en dichas ectomicorrizas, de las cepas obtenidas y de su comparación con secuencias de ADN obtenidas a partir fructificaciones de los hongos. Las secuencias de ADN obtenidas se analizaron a través de un análisis filogenético para reconocer la relación entre las muestras. -

Three forest sites Kashmir viz., Dachigam, Shalimar and Shankaracharia hills were surveyed periodically for Himalayas, Species Richness, Zabarvan three consecutive years (2011-2013) for ectomycorrhiza. A total number of 67 forest species in 23 genera belonging to 21 families in 07 orders were recorded. The study revealed that mycorrhizal fungal species richness was more in autumn Article Info season (45 species) and less in summer (11 species). Perry or years, one of the most commonly collected and highly sought after Fedible mushroom species in California has gone without a proper scientific name. Although many of you may not have realized this, the oak woodland chanterelle we so commonly collect here in the Bay Area and other regions of California, has had a name based upon a European species loosely applied to it. Undoubtedly, some of you have heard professionals or other knowledgeable fungophiles proclaim that our oak chanterelle is not the same species as that found in the coniferous forests of the Pacific Northwest, and that someone ought to put a good name on that species.
