DON’T MISS: RED SQUIRREL AWARENESS WEEK 26 SEPTEMBER – 4 OCTOBER These super-cute red heads were once commonly found across the UK, but since the introduction of the grey squirrel in the 50s, our native reds have rapidly declined in numbers. So, what can you do? Get out snapping and raise awareness of course! We’d love to see your squirrel shots shared with us on Twitter too, just tag them #olyreds and #OlympusUK and we’ll retweet our favourites. For more information on how you can support these beautiful beasties, read more on the The Wildlife Trusts website.

TOP TIPS: 1. LOCATION, LOCATION Red squirrels are most commonly found in Scotland, the Lake District and Northumberland, though some can be found further south in England and Wales, including Anglesey, Formby and the Isle of Wight. If this seems a little too wild for your liking, we highly recommend a trip to the British Wildlife Centre in Surrey where you can get up close and personal with their confident scurry of red squirrels – you’re guaranteed great shots.

2. BE PREPARED Take a zoom lens, like the M.ZUIKO 40-150mm f/2.8 Pro. With incredible reach – equivalent to an impressive 80- 300mm in 35mm terms, any timid critters will be brought right into your sights in crystal clear quality thanks to ZUIKO Extra-low Reflection Optical coating. And if you’re met with typically British weather, no problem – it’s dust, splash and freezeproof too.

3. PRIME TIME If you’re lucky enough to get up close, the M.ZUIKO 45mm f/1.8 is as perfect for furry-faced portraits as it is for the human kind. With delightful bokeh, go wide open with your aperture and pull all focus onto your sassy subject. Most natural habitats you find squirrels in should provide a pleasing backdrop colour for their glossy red coats.

4. IT’S ALL ABOUT THE EYES You can apply the rules of portraiture to your squirrel shots, so aim to get the eyes in focus. Using Single Autofocus on your PEN or OM-D should secure you what you need, or if you have the PEN-F, make use of the thumb focus tracking mode for locking onto your subject.

5. GO NUTS Squirrels can be shy, so don’t waste your time running after them hoping to steal the odd shot here and there, set yourself up to win. If you’re in the wild, find out about local feeding stations or go prepared with your own. Peanuts, sunflower seeds and hazelnuts are good offerings, as well as some fresh bounty like apple and carrot. If you joined us at the wonderful Giffords Circus earlier this summer for the fantastic Olympus photography event, you’ll recall some pretty healthy competition between the 60 or so keen photographers welcomed to the big top. The prize? An Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark II, along with a framed print of the winning shot from the day. The subjects? The incredible team at Giffords, who treated us to a show of multitalented entertainment including Bibi & Bichu the juggling brothers, set to test our low-light and focusing capabilities, incredible foot juggling by the Konjowoch Troupe and, of course, our favourite funny guy, Tweedy the clown. With the ever-British weather keeping us sheltering under the big top, attendees rotated around three portraits sessions led by Olympus masters, Damian

© DARREN© WILKIN McGillicuddy, Neil Buchan-Grant and Gavin Hoey. With plenty of opportunity to bag some crackin’ shots and ask plenty of questions, the competition was really hotting up, but there could only be one winner. Judges were super impressed with Nicole Tomkowiak, who captured Nancy Trotter Landry’s Native American Dance. Well done Nicole! © ALEEM CULLASY ALEEM ©

MARK VOLANTE GONE FISHING

As the sun dipped in the sky, Mark shot this pretty, picturesque scene in beautiful Cornwall

“Although only an hour away by car I couldn’t remember the last time I’d been to Mullion Cove so decided to spend an afternoon taking in the sun on the harbour wall. I went with one objective: to this old net store. It sits on its own and with the sun behind, it just screamed ‘quintessential Cornwall’. “It actually only took a couple of minutes to take the image, but hours for the sun to come into frame. I love the image because it epitomises Cornwall: the coast, fishing and granite cottages. Click “I see my Olympus gear as a reliable to hide friend, not just a camera.”

BILL BROWN SEA OF DREAMS

Careful planning netted Bill this stunning coastal shot

“This image was taken on Scotland’s east coast, with a view from an area called Seacliff, overlooking the Firth of Forth with Tantallon Castle and the Bass Rock in the background. “My day started at 4am and after a 1.5 hour drive I arrived at my destination. The previous few days were spent checking weather forecasts and tide times for this area, and as it happened, they both worked out perfectly. High tide was 6.50am and sunrise was 6.45am. “Wellington boots and very carefully climbing over the rocks in darkness – with only my head torch to light the way – were required (it’s not for the faint- hearted). Using a Lee 0.9ND hard grad filter, Lee Little Stopper 6-stop filter with a custom adapter kit from Shapeways 3D and a 6secs exposure allowed me to create the dreamlike effect I was looking for, and the wide Olympus lens gave me the perfect angle-of-view to get both the rock and castle in shot.”

RAHUL WALAWALKAR JUST ANOTHER DAY

Seasoned photographer Rahul found the combination of his OM-D E-M1 and 17mm f/1.8 perfect for this situation

“It was a nice sunny afternoon and suddenly the clouds started to creep in so we decided to go out and take some natural light portraits. As the sunlight was breaking through the clouds, it gave me a nice idea to place my model, Ryan Davies-Hall in the light with the white painted window behind, which acted as nice . “The image was shot outside Adrian Pini Studios near Brent Cross. For post- processing I added minimal contrast and some noise reduction and clarity.” rawclicks.wix.com/rawclicks

STEPHEN SHAW LITTLE OWL

Stephen found this cheeky chappy in Derbyshire, and captured his expression perfectly with the E-M1 and new 300mm f/4

“I visited the National Trust property Calke Abbey, in Derbyshire near my home, to test the new 300mm lens out. I usually do but am really pleased with my new Olympus set-up and I only slightly post-processed this shot with sharpening, cropping etc. “I find the main challenge for this type of shot is finding the owls in the first place. On this day it only took about 30 minutes or so but I have spent hours in the past trying to find them.”

DICK HAWKES FOX

Using his E-M1 Dick demonstrates the superb capabilities of the 60mm macro lens

“This image of a fox was taken at the British Wildlife Centre near Lingfield. It shows the detail captured by this amazingly sharp Olympus 60mm macro lens, and is a JPEG straight out of the camera with no post-production at all. The shot was taken while the fox was focusing on some food – you can see the concentration in the eyes! “One of a growing portfolio of wildlife portraits, each is an attempt to bring out the character of the subject, rather than try to show the whole bird or animal. It requires getting in close, either with good access to the subject such as with the fox or by using a very long lens. I hope to be able to test the new 300mm soon!” dickhawkesconsulting.co.uk

“In November 2014 I started a photo series of jazz musicians at the jazz club Unterfahrt, and have more than 50 photos for an exhibition in autumn 2016. “The tenor saxophone player on this photo is Émile Parisien, a French saxophonist, jazz band leader and composer born in 1982 in Cahors. TERRY GLYNN SAN GIORGIO MAGGIORE

A trip to Venice gave Terry the opportunity to experiment with ND filters and his new OM-D E-M5 Mark II

“When my wife suggested an impromptu trip to Venice it was just the excuse I needed to purchase the Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II Titanium edition. I had just started experimenting with neutral density filters and had this shot in mind before I left for Italy. I needed a combination of moving and static elements for a long exposure shot and this was perfect. The image was taken near Piazza San Marco, Venice, towards San Giorgio Maggiore.”

CHRIS BOYCE CONSIDERING LUNCH

Showcasing the talents of the new 300mm f/4 PRO lens Chris captured this stunning beast in Dartmoor

“This was taken on the Friday afternoon of a long weekend photo trip to Dartmoor. The weather was unsettled, cloudy with sunny spells after a morning of heavy cloud, rain and even hail! I went with my standard zoo kit, prepared to take photos, but as always I had to make the most of whatever opportunities presented themselves. “I do like the feeling of getting really close to animals, even if, like here, it’s something of an illusion afforded by a long telephoto lens. This guy is Chincha, a young male jaguar. He’s a teenager really, magnificent with loads of confidence and, well, what we might call arrogance. It is this that I think comes across in his intense stare. He acts as if he thinks he’s all that. To be fair, he probably is. He is certainly a real ‘lad’. “With the heavy showers and hail, it’s not kind weather to equipment and it certainly tested the weather sealing of my E-M1, 40-150mm f/2.8 PRO and 300mm f/4 IS PRO lenses. However, I can carry that kit around all day without cumbersome bags: one lens on camera and the other in my fleece pocket! I’d like to see other wildlife photographers try that with their equivalent kit.”
