Joan uncorked a convincing comeback record last time out and you'd hate yourself if you missed out on chapter two.Her Heavy Metal meets Tommy James & The Shondells treatment of "Dirty Deeds" is big fun with a bigger beat. In a half -frozen add week, 34 FMQBers got their hands dirty, giving Joan a #1 Most Added showing and the week's Traxmaker debut at 69*. Here's a modal era classic revamped and ready to react. The only thing missing is the growl at the end, but your jocks will take care of that. Among the new are WMMR, WNEW, WLLZ, WRIF, WBAB, WHTQ, WSHE, KBER, KSJO and WLVQ JON ANDERSON, "FAR FAR CRY' ("REQUIEM FOR THE AMERICAS"), ENIGMA That voice. It's one of the most recognizable set of chops on the radio. And when it's married to one of Jon's most mainstream solo trax, who'd want to say anything other than yes? This is the first emphasis track from "Requiem For The Americas", Jonathan Elias' tribute to native American culture. Written by Elias and Anderson, "Far Far Cry" sounds both modern and tribal. The record's richly textured with pounding torn toms, Warren Cuccarullo's careening guitar, a big church organ, synths, rhythm machine and, of course, tndt voice.Early play on KTCZ, WZEW, KZYR, WCIZ and WFRD. EDIE BRICKELL & NEW BOHEMIANS, "A HARD RAIN'S A GONNA MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK ALBUM FALL" ("BORN ON THE FOURTH OF JULY" OST), MCA BORN ON THE FOURTH OF JULY EDIE BRICKELL NEWS4HEMIANFS anT4 BORN ON THE BAYOU by THE BROKEN HOMES In case you just crawled out of a cave, Oliver Stone has directed a second Vietnam Plus classH songs by FRANKIEMORE AVALON DON McCLEAN VAN THE SHIRELLES THE TEMPTATIONS HENRY MANCINI flick, starring Tom Cruise as Ron Kovic, the highest profile anti -war vet of that era. and score by JOHN WILLIAMS Unlike its predecessor, this soundtrack Lp sports new material and Edie's contribution is air worthy for several reasons. She and the New Bohemians are unique, tasty and Platinum. Like WBCN's Carter Alan told us a while back, "Edie's the cornerstone of the tie dye rock scene and the sky's the limit with this band." Her cover of Dylan's narrative Sixties epic not only complements the film's subject matter but presents a smart angle for tieing in with what looks like one of the year's biggest movies. Their fans will like the way The New Bo's adapt "Hard Rain" to their distinctive style and Classic -fed listeners should groove out too. COMPANY OF WOLVES, "CALL OF THE WILD", MERCURY The Holiday Freeze is over and your station's slightly impoverished playlist could use a major primp job. So what's a programmer to do? You could let this pack of hungry wolves take a bite out of your list. They're lean, tough and melodic, with a hint of the shit kickin' country -influenced sound that made Steve Earle's "Copperhead Road" such a standout. Their debut track is radio -ready without sounding contrived or calculated. And don't most labels typically put their best baby bands forward in the first quarter? Hey, the Mercury machine's already locked up 15 adds including KISS, WLZR, KRXQ, WTPA, and KRZQ before the obligatory blitz. HAVANA BLACK, "LONE WOLF", CAPITOL We're still trying to figure out if Havana Black is another bar band from Redondo Beach or a root that stimulates nirvanic hallucinations when dried and smoked by Skava Navajos. One thing we are certain of is they've crafted a bee-yoo-tee-full leadoff in the tradition of classic British Rock like Bad Company and Cream. Lead singer J.T. Guts is a vocal dead ringer for Paul Rogers, and the band cooks hotter than the proverbial poodle in a microwave. After staging a slow -building intro, Havana Black letsit rip with a smoldering smoker remixed by Alan (Guns N' Roses) Niven. You won't be alone on "Lone Wolf". PETER MURPHY, "CUTS YOU UP", BEGGARS BANQUET/RCA PETER MURPHY Deep First, a little background: Peter Murphy fronted Bauhaus, forging a look and a sound erl, features. The line Between the Devil's I eellt which came to be called Goth -rock, one of the most influential of the post -punk Cuts 0ou Uti/A Strange kind (t1 musical movements. The breakup of Bauhaus spawned Love And Rockets and Murphy's solo career, which has met with considerable success on the Adventure Club circuit. Here's an extremely tuneful track from his third solo album. It's superbly crafted, gets under your skin in just a couple of listens, and sports a gently weeping fiddle line that you'll remember for some time. The arrangement builds in intensity, climaxing with a nifty modern wall -of -sound. Already #1 Most Added at Alternative and beckoning for the Big Cross. FMQ13, January 5, 1990 SURE SHOTS Continued From Previous Page SHAKING FAMILY, "TIC TOC", ELEKTRA By now, we've all learned that a left field name on Elektra doesn't always mean left field music. In the case of Shaking Family, the music's an original hybrid of acoustic and electric styles, with a very mainstream approach."Tic Toc" goes pop with vocalist/guitarist Barbara Carter, who's voice smacks of Melissa meets Tina. She's energetic and soulful and the rest of this Louisville -based band lays down a cool, accessible sound that's bound to dupe anyone trying to pigeonhole them. Refreshing. STEVIE SALAS COLORCODE,"THE HARDER THEY COME", ISLAND Stevie's not just another flashy guitar slinger from Southern California with a smoking Strat and a bad attitude. He's also an expressive singer and a songwriter/producer with loads of potential. He and his aptly titled band, Colorcode, turn out a burning, churning hunk of brash funk rock in the tradition of "Walk This Way" and Living Colour. There's plenty of volcanic guitar. But you're also treated to a good measure of musical invention steeped in soul, hard rock, funk and blues from a 25 -year -old who's played with Rod Stewart, George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, David Kershenbaum, Was (Not Was), Warrant and The Tubes. Listen loud. DEPTH TRAX TOM PETTY, "FACE IN THE CROWD", MCA RICHARD MARX, "TOOLATE TO SAY Face it, 1989 was Petty's year. Copping top honors in all GOODBYE", EMI major categories, TP was, and is, the king of Automatics. The airplay reach of "Full Moon Fever" Richard's been parking 'em over the fence left and right was unparalleled in with the current album, on a multitude of formats. And the '89, and the per track performance elevated the format's Marx factor on MTV is always A ok.AOR's biggest confidence to the nth degree. The dreamy "Face In The success has come with Richard's rockers and "Too Late Crowd" is vintage Jeff Lynne production, as TPcroons out another winner.
