The Jewel That Is Sicily

THE JEWEL of Sicily will commence in at the Hotel Villa Igiea situated overlooking the port of Palermo it is approximately 25 minutes from Palermo Airport. We shall remain at this hotel for one night your cars shall await your arrival. The following morning we shall commence our first drive and proceed to Sciacca. We shall begin to see the wonderful landscapes and experience driving through this Historic Island finishing the day at the splendid Verdura Golf resort hotel for four nights. After experiencing the first day and the regional culture we shall drive loop days and discover other parts of Sicily from the resort.

You will have the opportunity to see the magnificent countryside travelling through all the major regions of Sicily view and experience the many different cultures and without any doubt stay in the best five star hotels as well experience the best regional culinary delights this country has to offer. Visit a private home as well as the best restaurants in the regions as well enjoy the fine wines of Sicily many of which are now winning international awards!

There will be many unique and exceptional visits to special venues along the routes we have chosen including many extraordinary special venues where special permissions to enter have been sought, as well we will have with us, to control traffic, the Polizia Stradale. We will also have a staff of 4 mechanics and 4 translators, also a courtesy car with us throughout the entire route. The roadbook will be prepared by the same company as the Targa Florio rally.

The event will end in a fabulous location in the beautiful town of Taormina for the final Black Tie Gala dinner.

The chairman of The Jewel Events has driven through the entire inspection of all venues for this event and is satisfied that all participants will be overwhelmed by the quality that this tour will offer and in fact I am astonished discovering for myself just how much Sicily has to offer from so many different aspects; history, wonderful wine and food, a lovely kind and warm people and exceptional regional diversity.

If you would like to join us on this fantastic adventure, please contact us speedily.

We only have 25 places available for this event.

With warmest good wishes from us all at the Jewel Events

FRIDAY 10TH OCTOBER - ARRIVAL DAY PALERMO – VILLA IGIEA

CHECK IN FROM 3PM

WELCOME COCKTAIL PARTY FOLLOWED BY A SPECIAL PRIVATE DINNER AT THE VILLA IGIEA HOTEL.

THE GRAND HOTEL VILLA IGIEA HAS BEEN A LANDMARK FOR MORE THAN A CENTURY, SINCE IT WAS DESIGN BY THE FAMED ARCHITECT ERNESTO BASILE, AT THE END OF THE 19TH CENTURY FOR THE FLORIO FAMILY. THE HOTEL IS A MAGNIFICENT EXAMPLE OF ART NOUVEAU ON THE PALERMO COAST, THE HISTORICAL CAPITAL OF SUN-SOAKED SICILY. FEATURING FRAGRANT TERRACED GARDENS, PANORAMIC VIEWS OF THE SPARKLING BAY OF PALERMO AND MOUNT PELLEGRINO AND A ACONVENIENT LOCATION, ONLY 3KM FROM THE COMMERCIAL CENTRE OF THE CITY.

SATURDAY 11TH OCTOBER PALERMO TO SCIACCA – ROCCO FORTE VERDURA GOLF & SPA

A DRIVE THROUGH SOME OF THE MOST SPECTACULAR HILLS OF SICILY WILL TAKE US TO THE HISTORIC TOWN OF MONREALE. THE CATHEDRAL OF MONREALE IS ONE OF THE GREATEST EXTANT EXAMPLES OF NORMAN ARCHITECTURE IN THE WORLD. BUILDING BEGAN IN 1174 BY WILLIAM II, AND IN 1182 THE CHURCH, DEDICATED TO THE ASSUMPTION OF THE VIRGIN MARY, WAS, BY POPE LUCIUS III, ELEVATED TO THE RANK OF A METROPOLITAN CATHEDRAL. THE CHURCH IS A NATIONAL MONUMENT OF AND ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ATTRACTIONS OF SICILY.

BEFORE HEADING TO THE WONDERFUL VERDURA RESORT, WE SHALL VISIT AND EXPLORE THE ANCIENT GREEK TEMPLE OF SEGESTA. IT WAS BUILT SOMETIME IN THE LATE 5TH CENTURY BC AND HAS SIX BY FOURTEEN COLUMNS ON A BASE MEASURING 21 BY 56 METERS, ON A PLATFORM THREE STEPS HIGH. SEVERAL THINGS SUGGEST THAT THE TEMPLE WAS NEVER ACTUALLY FINISHED.

SUNDAY 12TH OCTOBER LOOP DRIVE – ROCCO FORTE VERDURA GOLF & SPA

TODAY, WE WILL DRIVE TOWARDS THE WESTERNMOST PART OF SICILY TO THE FAMOUS TOWN OF MARSALA, INTERNATIONALLY FAMOUS FOR ONE THING: WINE. ITS INHABITANTS, HOWEVER, WHILE BEING EXTREMELY PROUD OF THEIR AMBER NECTAR, ARE EQUALLY ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT THEIR TOWN’S LONG, ILLUSTRIOUS HISTORY. THE HISTORIC CENTRE OF MARSALA IS AN ELEGANT TOWN FULL OF STATELY BAROQUE BUILDINGS AND BOOKSHOPS WITHIN A PERFECT SQUARE OF WALLS. THE PRESENT-DAY NAME, DERIVING FROM THE ARABIC “MARSA ALLAH”, MEANING “PORT OF GOD”, GIVES US AN IDEA OF JUST HOW STRATEGICALLY IMPORTANT THE TOWN ONCE WAS. BEFORE THE ARABS, HOWEVER, WERE THE ROMANS, AND BEFORE THE ROMANS, THE CARTHAGINIANS. IT WAS THESE LATTER, UNDER HIMILCO, WHO BUILT THE HUGE PORT AND UNASSAILABLE STRONGHOLD OF LILIBEO IN 396BC AS A REPLACEMENT FOR MOTYA (OR MOZIA), WHICH HAD BEEN DESTROYED THE YEAR BEFORE BY DIONYSUS I OF SIRACUSA.

MONDAY 13TH OCTOBER LOOP DRIVE – ROCCO FORTE VERDURA GOLF & SPA

WE DEPARTE FROM THE HOTEL AND HEAD FOR THE HILLS OF SOUTHERN SICILY FOR A GORGEOUS DAY LOOP.

WE SHALL VISIT THE PICTORESQUE PALAZZO ADRIANO. DESPITE BEING A CUTE LITTLE TOWN, FOUNDED IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE 15TH CENTURY BY GREEK- ALBANIANS, IT IS MUCH MORE WELL KNOWN FOR BEING THE SET FOR WHERE ‘CINEMA PARADISO’ WAS SHOT. GIUSEPPE TORNATORI'S 1988 MASTERPIECE "NUOVO CINEMA PARADISO" WAS FILMED HERE: THE VILLAGE STANDS IN AS THE SETTING FOR TORNANBUONI'S FICTIONAL GIANCALDO. IT'S WHERE THE SUCCESSFUL FILM-DIRECTOR (PLAYED BY JACQUES PERRIN) RETURNS AFTER A 30-YEAR ABSENCE FOR THE FUNERAL OF HIS CHILDHOOD HERO AND MENTOR, ALFREDO, THE LOCAL PROJECTIONIST, PLAYED BY PHILIPPE NOIRET, WHO INSPIRED HIS EARLY LOVE FOR FILM.

TUESDAY 14TH OCTOBER LEISURE DAY – ROCCO FORTE VERDURA GOLF & SPA

AFTER SOME EXTREMELLY GOOD, YET INTENSIVE DRIVING, I AM SURE WE ALL WILL BE EAGER FOR A RELAXING DAY BY THE BEACH OR FOR THE GOLF AFFICIONADOS – TWO WORLD CLASS CHAMPIONSHIP COURSES.

AROUND LATE AFTERNOON WE SHALL ALL BE TRANSFERRED TO A WONDERFUL WINE TASTING AT ONE OF SICILY’S BEST WINE PRODUCER, PLANETA, FOR A SPECIAL PRIVATE TASTING FOLLOWED BY DINNER.

WEDNESDAY 15TH OCTOBER SCIACCA TO AGRIGENTO – VILLA ATHENA

A SHORT DISTANCE FROM SCIACCA, NEVERTHELESS A GORGEOUS DRIVE TO OUR NEXT STOP, THE VALLEY OF THE TEMPLES, A UNESCO SITE AND ONE OF SICILY’S MOST FAMOUS HISTORICAL ATTRACTIONS, WITHOUT A DOUBT! THIS SPLENDID ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK CONSISTS OF EIGHT TEMPLES (AND VARIOUS OTHER REMAINS) BUILT BETWEEN ABOUT 510 BC AND 430 BC: THE TEMPLE OF HERA, THE TEMPLE OF CONCORDIA, THE TEMPLE OF HERACLES, THE TEMPLE OF OLYMPIAN ZEUS, THE TEMPLE OF CASTOR AND POLLUX, THE TEMPLE OF HEPHAESTOS, THE TEMPLE OF DEMETER, AND THE TEMPLE OF ASCLEPIUS (THE GOD OF MEDICINE). APART FROM THE LATTER, WHICH IS TO BE FOUND ON THE BANKS OF THE AKRAGAS RIVER, ALL ARE SITUATED IN THE SAME AREA ON ROCKY CRESTS SOUTH OF MODERN DAY AGRIGENTO (NOT REALLY IN A VALLEY AT ALL!).

OUR HOTEL FOR THE NEXT TWO NIGHTS IS AT A BEAUTIFUL 18TH CENTURY VILLA BUILT LITERALLY OPPOSITE TWO OF THE GREEK TEMPLES. AT THE HOTEL VILLA ATHENA, YOU WILL FIND YOURSELF PROJECTED BACK IN TIME: FROM THE HOTEL GROUNDS, YOU WILL BE ABLE TO ADMIRE THE WONDERFUL TEMPLE OF CONCORD, WHICH HAS BEEN PERFECTLY CONSERVED AND IS MERELY A COUPLE OF HUNDRED METRES AWAY.

A VERY SPECIAL PRIVATE DINNER AT THE HOTEL, DIRECTLY OVERLOOKING THE TEMPLE OF CONCORD.

THURSDAY 16TH OCTOBER LOOP DRIVE – VILLA ATHENA

HEADING EAST, WE WILL DRIVE TOWARDS THE SHORES OF LICATA FOR A WONDERFUL EARLY AFTERNOON AT A VERY UNIQUE WINERY, FEUDO PRINCIPI DI BUTERA, IN THE PROVINCE OF CALTANISSETTA.

AN EARLYISH DRIVE BACK IN TIME TO EXPLORE THE VALLEY OF THE TEMPLES AND VIEW THE AMAZING SUNSET OVER THE SEA.

FRIDAY 17TH OCTOBER AGRIGENTO TO TAORMINA – GRAND HOTEL TIMEO

SITUATED DEEP IN THE SICILIAN HINTERLAND, AT 721 METRES ABOVE SEA LEVEL, STANDS PIAZZA ARMERINA, ONE OF SICILY’S MOST FREQUENTED TOURIST SPOTS. HOWEVER, IT IS NOT THE TOWN THAT MOST PEOPLE COME TO SEE, BUT THE FAMOUS VILLA ROMANA DEL CASALE (ALSO A UNESCO SITE). BUILT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE 4TH CENTURY AD AS A HUNTING LODGE BY A ROMAN PATRICIAN (IT IS NOT KNOWN FOR SURE WHO THE OWNER WAS) THE VILLA IS HOME TO SOME OF THE BEST PRESERVED AND EXTENSIVE EXAMPLES OF ROMAN MOSAICS SPREAD OVER AROUND 3500MT. THESE EXTRAORDINARILY VIVID MOSAICS, PROBABLY PRODUCED BY NORTH AFRICAN ARTISANS, DEAL WITH NUMEROUS SUBJECTS, RANGING FROM HOMERIC ESCAPADES AND MYTHOLOGICAL SCENES TO PORTRAYALS OF DAILY LIFE, INCLUDING THE FAMOUS TABLEAU OF GIRLS EXERCISING IN THEIR “BIKINIS”.

A WONDERFUL PRIVATE LUNCH WILL BE AT ONE OF THE MOST EXCLUSIVE AGRITURISMO IN SICILY, BANNATA, HOSTED BY THE CHARMING OWNER NIETTA. THE NAME OF THE BANNATA FARMHOUSE, WHICH IS ALSO THE SAME NAME OF THE AREA THAT IT IS LOCATED IN ENNA, DERIVES FROM ARAB MEANING “LAND KISSED BY THE SUN”. THE STONE FARMHOUSE STYLE OF TYPICAL 19TH CENTURY INLAND SICILIAN ARCHITECTURE IS ALSO ACCOMPANIED BY A PRE-EXISTING STRUCTURE FROM THE 18TH CENTURY IN WHICH LIVED FARM ANIMALS.

TODAY WE ARRIVE AT THE GRAND HOTEL TIMEO IN TAORMINA. IDYLLICALLY PERCHED ON A ROCKY PROMONTORY HIGH ABOVE THE SEA, TAORMINA HAS BEEN THE MOST POPULAR TOURIST DESTINATION IN SICILY FOR A COUPLE OF HUNDRED YEARS. BEAUTIFULLY RESTORED MEDIAEVAL BUILDINGS, BREATHTAKING VIEWS AROUND EVERY CORNER AND A GIDDY NETWORK OF WINDING STREETS STREWN WITH SHOPS, BARS AND RESTAURANTS. TAORMINA’S PAST IS SICILY’S HISTORY IN A MICROCOSM: GREEKS, ROMANS, BYZANTINES, ARABS, NORMANS, SWABIANS, THE FRENCH AND THE SPANISH ALL CAME, SAW, CONQUERED AND LEFT.

SATURDAY 18TH OCTOBER LOOP DRIVE – GRAND HOTEL TIMEO

NO INTRODUCTION IS NEEDED TO TODAY’S STUNNING DRIVE AROUND MOUNT ETNA. THE CULMINATION POINT OF THIS SICILIAN JEWEL.

IN THE AFTERNOON AN EXCLUSIVE VISIT FOLLOWED BY LUNCH AT THE BEAUTIFUL VILLA MONACI DELLE TERRE NERE, HOSTED BY THE OWNER, GUIDO.

TONIGHT’S VERY SPECIAL PRIVATE BLACK TIE GALA DINNER WILL BE HELD ON THE HOTEL WITH EXCEPTIONAL VIEWS OVER TAORMINA AND MOUNT ETNA.

BOOKING CONDITIONS YOUR CONTRACT IS WITH The Jewel Events, and whose registered office is at Chalet Emeraude, Chateau d’Oex 1660, Switzerland (referred to herein as “the Company” or “us” or “we”).

1. APPLICATION PROCESS & YOUR HOLIDAY CONTRACT: To apply for a place on “The Jewel That is SICILY” (“the Tour”), please complete, sign and date the application form that can be found in the brochure and send it to The Jewel Events, Chalet Emeraude, Chateau d’Oex 1660, Switzerland. We will notify you if your application to participate in the Tour has been accepted. Please note that we shall not be liable whatsoever for loss of enjoyment or any other similar losses or damages if your application is unsuccessful. If your application is accepted, your booking will be subject to these Booking Conditions and a legally binding contract will exist between the Company and each person that is named on the application form as intending to travel and participate in the Tour. Each person that has signed the application form warrants, represents and undertakes that he/she has full authority to do so on behalf of all persons whose names appear on the application form and warrants, represents and undertakes that all such persons are fully aware of and accept these Booking Conditions. Each person that is named on the application form shall be liable to pay all sums due to us in respect of the Tour on a joint and several basis. THEREFORE, PLEASE ENSURE THAT ALL PERSONS DETAILED ON THE APPLICATION FORM READ THESE BOOKING CONDITIONS CAREFULLY. 2. TOUR PRICE: (a) We reserve the right to alter the prices of the Tour shown in the brochure and/or application form. You will be advised of the current prices of the Tour before your contract is confirmed. Please note that the following items are not included in the prices (without limitation): air travel for the participants (unless otherwise specified), incidental and sundry expenses, single room supplement and car marine insurance When you make your booking you must pay the relevant deposit. The balance of the price of your travel arrangements must be paid in accordance with the payment schedule and payment methods set out in the brochure and/or application form. Time for payment is of the essence of your contract. Accordingly, if the deposit and/or balance is not paid by the due dates set out in the payment schedule, we shall cancel your application to participate in the Tour. If the balance is not paid in time we shall retain your deposit and all other sums paid to date. (b) Changes in transportation costs, including (but not limited to) the cost of fuel, taxes or fees chargeable for services such as landing taxes or embarkation or disembarkation fees at ports and airports and exchange rates mean that the price of your participation in the Tour may change after your application has been accepted. However there will be no change within 30 days of your departure. We will absorb and you will not be charged for any increase equivalent to or under 2% of the price of your participation in the Tour, which excludes insurance premiums and any amendment charges. You will be charged for the amount over and above that, plus an administration charge together with an amount to cover agents’ commission. If this means that you have to pay an increase of more than 10% of the price of your participation in the Tour, you will have the option of cancelling and receiving a full refund of all monies paid less appropriate administration charges, except for any amendment charges. Should you decide to cancel for this reason, you must exercise your right to do so within 14 days from the issue date printed on your final invoice. Should the price of your holiday go down due to the changes mentioned above by more than 2% of the cost of your participation in the Tour, then any refund due will be paid to you. However, please note that travel arrangements are not always purchased in local currency and some apparent changes have no impact on the price of your participation in the Tour due to contractual and other protection in place.

3. SUBSTITUTION OF PARTICIPANT(S): If any person named on the application form is prevented from travelling it may be possible to transfer the booking to another suitable person and suitable vehicle (such suitability to be decided at the Company’s absolute discretion) provided that written notice is given a reasonable length of time prior to departure. An administration fee will be charged plus any additional costs that are imposed on us. If applicable, airlines may impose 100% cancellation charges and the cost of a new ticket. All costs incurred in making the transfer will be the responsibility of the original named participant and the proposed substituted participant. If we decide that such alternative person and/or vehicle is not suitable or if your request to transfer is not received a reasonable length of time prior to departure, you will be deemed to have cancelled your booking and the terms of paragraph 4 below shall apply.

4. IF YOU CANCEL: You, or any other participant named in your application form, may cancel your booking at any time but subject to the remaining provisions of this paragraph. Written notification from the person who made the application must be received at our offices no less than 3 months prior to the start date of the Tour. If your notice is received by us less than 3 months prior to the start date of the Tour, then we reserve the right to retain all sums that you have paid to us. If your notice is received by us 3 months or more prior to the start date of the Tour, then you will be entitled to receive a refund of all sums that you have paid to us but less such cancellation charges that we consider to be reasonable and appropriate in all the circumstances. In general, the more notice that you give to us the more money that you will be refunded. Notwithstanding the foregoing, since all accommodation for the Tour participants is booked on a “group basis”, in the event of your cancellation, a hotel’s standard cancellation policy may not apply. In addition and if applicable, many air tickets have no refund value whatsoever and, therefore, airlines may impose 100% cancellation charges. Note: As mentioned at paragraph 8 below, we strongly recommend that you take out an appropriate insurance policy as soon as your application to participate in the Tour is accepted by us and, accordingly, if the reason for your cancellation is covered under the terms of such an insurance policy, you may be able to reclaim from the insurer all or some of the sums that you have paid to us and/or the relevant airline in connection with your participation in the Tour.

5. IF WE CHANGE OR CANCEL THE TOUR: Our aim is to operate the Tour in accordance with the brochure but since we do plan the Tour many months in advance we may have to make changes and we reserve the right to do so at any time. Most of these changes will be minor and we will advise you of them at the earliest possible date. We also reserve the right in any circumstances to cancel your participation in the Tour or indeed to cancel the Tour itself; for example (but without limitation), if the minimum number of participants required for the Tour is not reached, we may have to cancel it. However, we will not cancel your application to participate in the Tour or the Tour itself less than 4 weeks before your departure date, except for reasons of “force majeure” (see below) or failure by you to pay the final balance. If we have to cancel your participation in the Tour or the Tour itself, you can either receive a full refund of all the monies that you have paid less appropriate administration costs or accept an offer to participate in any other tour organised by us (and we will refund any price difference if the alternative tour is of a lower value).

If we make a major change to the Tour, we will inform you as soon as reasonably possible if there is time before your departure. You will have the choice of either accepting the change of arrangements, accepting an offer of your participation in any other tour organised by us (we will refund any price difference if the alternative is of a lower value), or cancelling your participation and receiving a full refund of all monies paid less appropriate administration costs.

“Force Majeure” means unusual or unforeseeable circumstances beyond our control. These can include, for example (but without limitation), war, riot, industrial dispute, terrorist activity and its consequences, natural or nuclear disaster, fire, adverse weather conditions.

6. PASSPORT, VISA & IMMIGRATION REQUIREMENTS AND RECOMMENDED VACCINATIONS & MEDICATIONS: Your specific passport and visa requirements, and other immigration requirements, are your sole responsibility and you must identify any specific immigration requirements. We do not accept any

responsibility if you cannot travel because you have not complied with any passport, visa or immigration requirements. You must also identify and obtain all recommended vaccinations and take all recommended medications for the country where the Tour is taking place. We do not accept any responsibility if you fall ill or die or suffer any loss as a result of your failure to obtain such vaccinations and/or take all such medications.

7. TRAVEL, HEALTH & OTHER INSURANCE: You are advised to take out suitable travel, health and civil liability insurance in order to take part in the Tour, for yourself, your vehicle and the damages your may cause to third parties. You are wholly responsible for arranging your own insurance. We strongly advise you to take out marine and additional road risk insurance which can be provided by our designated car tyransportation company. This cannot be taken up once you have left the UK. We recommend that such additional insurance is taken out and we take no responsibility for any accident or event that may occur to you or your vehicle, in transit, at the destination or during the Tour, except in situations provided for in Art. 9 below.

8. LOCAL LAWS & BEHAVIOUR: All participants in the Tour are expected to obey the laws and regulations of the countries visited and behave in a responsible manner at all times so as not to cause offence or danger to any other person or property. Any failure to do so will relieve us of all obligations that we may otherwise have under this contract. In particular, participants shall comply with all provisions of the local Road Traffic Laws and shall be liable for all consequences (loss and damages) caused by any infringement of these provisions (such as, for example, drinking and driving in breach of the laws of the country where the Tour takes place).

9. OUR LIABILITY AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Given the nature of the Tour, there is an element of potential risk and exposure to potential hazards whilst travelling. All applications are accepted on the understanding that you appreciate such risks and hazards and that you undertake the Tour at your own volition.

If you participate in an activity not included as part of the Tour itinerary, you accept all responsibility for taking part in such an activity and indemnify us against any and all claims related to such an activity.

Were you to suffer any damage as a result from the non-performance or improper performance of the services involved in the Tour, we shall not be so liable if there has been no fault on the part of us or our employees, officers, agents, suppliers or sub-contractors, or if the cause was the fault of you (including, without limiting the generality of the foregoing, your participation in any activity/option not specifically detailed as included on the Tour or operated directly by us) or due to the actions of someone unconnected with the Tour or due to circumstances which neither we nor our partners could have reasonably anticipated or avoided.

In any event of a loss or damage caused by the result from the non-performance or improper performance of the services involved in the Tour and provided there has been a fault by our employees, officers or agents, our liability shall be limited as follows:

(a) In case of a loss or damage other than personal injury, our liability shall be limited to a maximum of twice the total cost of the price that you have paid to participate in the Tour or to the limitation specified in any relevant and applicable international convention, whichever is lower. We are to be regarded as having all benefit of any limitation of compensation contained in these or any other applicable conventions from time to time.

(b) In case of personal injury our liability shall be limited in accordance with and/or in an identical manner to any relevant and applicable international convention. We are to be regarded as having all benefit of any limitation of compensation contained in these or any other applicable conventions from time to time.

10. EXCLUSIONS: To the fullest extent permitted by law, we do not recommend, guarantee, warrant or represent (whether expressly or impliedly): (a) the safety, risk management, planning or any other element whatsoever of the Tour; (b) the suitability, quality, specification, fitness for purpose or any other element whatsoever of any of the routes or venues used in the course of the Tour; (c) the suitability, experience, expertise, training, qualifications, fitness for purpose or any other element whatsoever of any of the sub-contractors, agents, suppliers, consultants or personnel used or engaged in the provision of the Tour.

11. DATA PROTECTION: We shall hold all personal information that we obtain from you in accordance with the Swiss Data Protection Act and any other applicable data protection legislation.

12. JURISDICTION AND APPLICABLE LAW: All matters or claims arrising under or in connection with this Contract shall be governed by and construed in accordance with Swiss laws and the parties irrevocably agree that Swiss courts shall have jurisdiction over any claim or matter arising under or in connection with this Contract.
