It is the grave church of St. Olav, the patron Saint of Norway and has now become one of Europe’s major historical pilgrim destinations. Nidaros Cathedral is also where coronations and royal blessings take place. The cathedral is mainly built in soapstone. It is located on the foundations of former churches, and the oldest standing parts of the church, the transepts, are from about 1160-70. The church is rebuilt with brick vaults over the choir and western nave, and across the archways under the triforium. The copper-covered roof is carried by steel structures with the exception of the transepts, the chapter house and the extended chapels in the transepts which all have pure wood structures in the roof.

  • Using GPS Mapping Software to Plot Place Names and Trails in Igloolik (Nunavut) CLAUDIO APORTA1
ARCTIC VOL. 56, NO. 4 (DECEMBER 2003) P. 321–327 New Ways of Mapping: Using GPS Mapping Software to Plot Place Names and Trails in Igloolik (Nunavut) CLAUDIO APORTA1 (Received 11 July 2001; accepted in revised form 10 February 2003) ABSTRACT. The combined use of a GPS receiver and mapping software proved to be a straightforward, flexible, and inexpensive way of mapping and displaying (in digital or paper format) 400 place names and 37 trails used by Inuit of Igloolik, in the Eastern Canadian Arctic. The geographic coordinates of some of the places named had been collected in a previous toponymy project. Experienced hunters suggested the names of additional places, and these coordinates were added on location, using a GPS receiver. The database of place names thus created is now available to the community at the Igloolik Research Centre. The trails (most of them traditional, well-traveled routes used in Igloolik for generations) were mainly mapped while traveling, using the track function of a portable GPS unit. Other trails were drawn by experienced hunters, either on paper maps or electronically using Fugawi mapping software. The methods employed in this project are easy to use, making them helpful to local communities involved in toponymy and other mapping projects. The geographic data obtained with this method can be exported easily into text files for use with GIS software if further manipulation and analysis of the data are required. Key words: Inuit place names, Inuit trails, mapping, Geographic Information System, GIS, Global Positioning System, GPS, Igloolik, toponymy RÉSUMÉ.

  • Folklore, Folk Belief, and the Selkie
Supernatural Beings in the Far North: Folklore, Folk Belief, and The Selkie NANCY CASSELL MCENTIRE Within the world of folklore, stories of people turning into animals are well known. Either by accident or by design, a person may become a malevolent wolf, a swan, a helpful bird, a magic seal, a dog, a cat. Sometimes these stories are presented as folktales, part of a fictitious, make-believe world. Other times they are presented as legends, grounded in a narrator’s credibility and connected to everyday life. They may be sung as ballads or their core truths may be implied in a familiar proverb. They also affect human behavior as folk belief. Occasionally, sympathetic magic is involved: the human imagination infers a permanent and contiguous relationship between items that once were either in contact or were parts of a whole that later became separated or transformed. A narrative found in Ireland, England, and North America depicts a man who spends a night in a haunted mill, where he struggles with a cat and cuts off the cat’s paw. In the morning, the wife of a local villager has lost her hand (Baughman: 99; Disenchantment / Motif no. D702.1.1). France, French-speaking Canada and French-speaking Louisiana have stories of the loup-garou, a shape- shifter who is a person trapped in the body of an animal. One might suspect that he or she has encountered a loup-garou if that the animal is unusually annoying, provoking anger and hostile action. One penetrating cut will break the spell that has kept it trapped in animal form.

  • Guidebooks on the Norwegian St. Olav Ways and the Heritagization of Religion
Numen 67 (2020) 508–536 brill.com/nu How to Be a Pilgrim: Guidebooks on the Norwegian St. Olav Ways and the Heritagization of Religion Dirk Johannsen Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages, University of Oslo, Oslo, Norway [email protected] Ane Ohrvik Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages, University of Oslo, Oslo, Norway [email protected] Abstract The Norwegian St. Olav Ways are currently the largest Northern European project re- institutionalizing pilgrimage as cultural heritage, providing a new framework for ver- nacular religious practices to a wide audience. In this article we approach the current pilgrimage revival in Northern Europe as part of a trend toward a heritagization of religion that allows new religious self-understandings to emerge. We analyze pilgrim guidebooks to the St. Olav Ways with regard to their narrative scripts, detailing how they can create expectations, inform the pilgrims’ conduct, and direct their attention toward a history that translates into a heritage. Based on a corpus of published pilgrim journals and diaries, we argue that the guidebooks instruct a process of interpretive drift, which influence the pilgrims toward embracing and embodying a new role with- in the religious field. The guidebooks invite the pilgrims to take on the role of heirs to a medieval European tradition.
