The thesis explores the relationship between the Australian folk revival and Australian Trade Unions. It provides a detailed study of events in the post war history of the union movement and the folk revival as evidence of a long relationship between them. Through a series of interviews with songwriters, and a discussion of folk revival magazines and folk song books, the thesis investigates the details of the connections between the two movements, and the social and political effects of these movements on changes that have occurred in Australia since the end of World War 2.

MAINTAINING OUR RAGE: INSIDE AUSTRALIA’S LONGEST-RUNNING MUSIC VIDEO PROGRAM. By Narelle Gee BA/DipEd (University of NSW) A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Creative Industries) School of Media, Entertainment, Creative Arts, Film, Screen and Animation Creative Industries Faculty Queensland University of Technology 2015 Key Words ABC Music Television Alternative Music Music Videos Australian Broadcasting Corporation Popular Music Australian Cultural Industries Production Cultures Australian Television Public Service Broadcasting Creative Labour rage Cultural Production Television Broadcasting Media Culture Television Production Music Industry TV Programs 2 Abstract The thesis, “Maintaining our rage: inside Australia’s longest-running music video program”, takes a reflective and reflexive narrative journey across the decades of rage, from its 1987 creation through to the program’s current incarnation, providing unique insider perspectives and affordances. Australia’s longest-running music video program is also, arguably, the most sustained such program globally (Bodey, 2012; Helper, 2012). Despite its longevity, there has been scarce scholarly analysis of rage, and of what has underpinned its unusual endurance; many music video programs have come and gone during the program’s long-held tenure. How has rage survived the vicissitudes of network programming – particularly within the capricious space of music video programming - and maintained its cultural place and role, for more than a quarter of a century? The significance of this research is that it explores rage’s unusual durability, examines the program’s unique elements, and answers three key research questions: What has been the history of rage as a program and a cultural entity? What has been the cultural significance of rage? How did rage create a shift within the music industry ecology of Australia? This thesis presents an insider’s account of rage, exploring it within its ABC TV and public broadcasting context.

Soul’s Eternity II. This is the Test Earlier this year I had the unique experience of discovering a poem by Derek Bourne-Jones in a cemetery, located on a rock in the centre of a beautiful ‘Garden of No Distant Place’. The powerful words of the poem eloquently touched on many feelings that I had had up until to that point about life, loss, sacrifice, eternity and most importantly, love. Drawing my inspiration from the poem, ‘No Distant Place’ is being approached as a large-scale and long-term project, of which Movement I and II are initial offerings. Movement I, ‘Soul’s Eternity’ is dedicated to the contributions of our World War 1 heroes, in particular the selfless bravery of Army Nurse Rachel Pratt. Conflicting emotions arise when reflecting on such tragic events as war and sacrifice; an undeniable sense of deep sadness and loss, an aching awareness of the long term impacts and of the vast legacies left behind. These feelings combined left me with a sense of depth, timelessness and the gravity of an immeasurable ‘eternity’.

Life in a Padded Cell: A Biography of Tony Cohen, Australian Sound Engineer by Dale Blair ©copyright ~ One ~ Satan has possessed your Soul! ‘Tony is very devout in “God’s Lesson”. I cannot speak highly enough of Tony’s manners and behaviour. They are beyond reproach’. It was the sort of report card every parent liked to see. It was 1964. The Beatles were big and Tony Cohen was a Grade One student at St. Francis de Sales primary school, East Ringwood. The following year he took his first communion. The Beatles were still big and there seemed little to fear for the parents of this conscientious and attentive eight-year-old boy. The sisters who taught him at that early age would doubtless have been shocked at the life he would come to lead – a life that could hardly be described as devout. Tony Cohen was born on 4 June 1957 in the maternity ward of the Jessie MacPherson hospital in Melbourne. Now a place specializing in the treatment of cancer patients it was a general hospital then. He was christened Anthony Lawrence Cohen. His parents Philip and Margaret Cohen had been living in James Street, Windsor, but had moved to the outer eastern suburb of East Ringwood prior to the birth of their son. Philip Cohen was the son of Jewish immigrants who had left Manchester, England, and settled in Prahran, one of Melbourne’s inner eastern suburbs. Philip’s father had served in the First World War, survived and then migrated to Australia with his wife and infant son (Tony’s Uncle David).
