The publication falls within the development plan for Communications approved by the Grand Magisterium and forms an integral part of other activities which are already under way (the annual magazine Annales Ordinis Equestris Sancti Sepulchri Hierosolymitani and the website www.oessg-gm.net). Unlike the Order’s magazine, which is printed, the Newsletterwill be distributed solely by e-mail. In this way, the Presidency of the Order hopes to meet the demand for general information on the life of the Order to be publicised in a way that is more immediate and makes more impact. Hornbake This dissertation is an exploration of associational life in central Italy, an examination of organizations that were central to the everyday experience of tens of thousands of Italians at a time when social, economic and geographical transformations were upending their everyday lives, 1945-1968. This dissertation examines facets of these transformations: the changing shape of cities, increasing mobility of people, technological changes that made possible new media and new cultural forms, from the perspective of local associations. Bransom, Jr. INTRODUCTION he study of apostolic succession and episcopal lineages has long fascinated students of church history. It was not until the middle T of the twentieth century, however, that a systematic attempt was made to trace and catalogue the consecrations of bishops on a world-wide basis. A small group of researchers has catalogued the consecrations of tens of thou­ sands of bishops dating back many centuries. The fruits of their labors--labors that are on going-have resulted in a database, which can trace the episcopal lineage of any living bishop and the vast majority of deceased bishops. In 1984, I began a project on the episcopal ordinations of bishops of re­ ligious orders and congregations. One fruit of that work was a study of the ordi­ nations of Salesian bishops, Les Eveques Salesiens. The present work updates, corrects and expands the 1984 study. In 1984, the episcopal ordinations of 130 bishops were presented. This study contains the details of 196 bishops. The text has been expanded to include the episcopal lineages of the bishops. Of the 196 bishops in this study, 183 trace their orders to Scipione Re­ biba, who was appointed Auxiliary Bishop ofChieti in 1541. The Rebiban suc­ cession is the major episcopal line in the contemporary Catholic episcopate. More than 91 % of the more than 4,500 bishops alive today trace their orders 54 Journal of Salesian Studies back to Rebiba Why so many bishops should trace their lineages to this one bishop can be explained, in great part, by the intense sacramental activity of Pope Benedict XIII, who consecrated 139 bishops during his pontificate, many of them cardinals, nuncios and bishops of important sees who in tum conse­ crated many other bishops.

The basilica is built on the summit of the Esquiline hill, which was once a commanding position. (1) (i)! History Ancient times The church is on the ancient Cispius, the main summit of the Esquiline Hill, which in ancient times was not a heavily built-up area. Near the site had been a Roman temple dedicated to a goddess of childbirth, Juno Lucina, much frequented by women in late pregnancy. Archaeological investigations under the basilica between 1966 and 1971 revealed a 1st century building, it seems to have belonged to a villa complex of the Neratii family. (1) (k) Liberian Basilica - Foundation legend - Civil war According to the Liber Pontificalis, this first church (the so-called Basilica Liberiana or "Liberian Basilica") was founded in the August 5, 358 by Pope Liberius. According to the legend that dates from 1288 A.D., the work was financed by a Roman patrician John, and his wife. They were childless, and so had decided to leave their fortune to the Blessed Virgin. She appeared to them in a dream, and to Pope Liberius, and told them to build a church in her honor on a site outlined by a miraculous snowfall, which occurred in August (traditionally in 358). Such a patch of snow was found on the summit of the Esquiline the following morning. The pope traced the outline of the church with his stick in the snow, and so the church was built.
