Mrs. Nevine Simaika Halim Abdalla, presented her credentials to Pope John Paul II. This provided The Holy Father with the opportunity to emphasize that negotiations were the only way out of the conflict in the region. Here are a some extracts from his address: “... As the Holy See never ceases to recall in these troubled times, there can be no lasting peace in international relations unless the desire for dialogue gets the better of the logic of confrontation ... ... I once again remind the International Community of its responsibility to encourage the return to reason and negotiation, the only possible way out of conflicts between human beings, because all peoples have the right to live in serenity and peace ... Religions have an important role to play in achieving the construction of peace. This mission is essential for humanity‘s future ... ... ORDO EQUESTRIS SANCTI SEPULCHRI HIEROSOLYMITANI PRAYING with the GRAND MASTER By the Communications Office of the Grand Magisterium Brothers and Sisters of our Order, dig deep into your heart’s imagination to see, to realize that it is Jesus who inspires and encourages our mission today. Edwin Cardinal O’Brien Today too, becoming a Knight of the Holy Sepulchre means witnessing to the Kingdom of Christ, and spreading the Church as well as working for charity with the same profound spirit of faith and love. Are you prepared to accept this ideal for your life? From the Mass of Investiture 3 This booklet contains some reflections that could help guide the monthly meetings of the Delegations, Sections, Lieutenancies across the world and, at the same time, our personal prayer. Inspired by the words of the Grand Master, Cardinal Edwin O’Brien, we want to touch on the main points of our mission and calling as members of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre and we hope to do so communally: within our local realities as well as globally – in the knowledge that from Taiwan to Norway and from Alaska to South Africa the Knights and Dames are praying in communion; but also individually. In the following pages you will find twelve themes, one for each month of the year, that touch us closely. In a sort of annual monthly reflection, we can be accompanied in prayer by the meditations of Cardinal O’Brien and by practical reflections. Blessings on both your reading and your journey! 4 JANUARY Jerusalem erusalem is the city of promise but also of fulfillment, a city in Jwhich past, present and future take on a theological and at the same time extremely concrete dimension.

Newsletter N° 54 jerusalem cross ordinis equestris sancti sepulchri hierosolymitani @granmagistero.oessh www.oessh.va @GM_oessh Message from the Grand Master Called to follow Jesus enewed by the rich graces of the Easter Season and Pentecost, the liturgy of the Church returns to “Ordinary Time” as we return from Jerusalem to Galilee and listen to His Rinvitation to discipleship. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus calls us to live the life He lived. Read along in Matthew, chapters 5 through 7, for a portrait of Christ, a portrait indeed that through grace, He would like to paint in each of us! Beginning with the Beatitudes, the DNA of the Christian life, the Sermon challenges us with teachings and standards, which only the saints would find practical, and achievable only through the daily graces of God. Investiture celebrations and regional lieutenancy gatherings have offered me reassuring evidence of our Order’s rich devotion to God and to good works on behalf of Christians in the Holy Land. Hopefully, our pace slackens a bit during these summer days, perhaps offering some moments of interior spiritual renewal. Might we add to our summer reading list a daily few minutes with the New Testament and a prayerful meditation on the Sermon on the Mount? Edwin Cardinal O’Brien The photo of this altar on the edge of Lake Tiberias reminds us that the members of the Order, together with all baptized, are called to witness to Christ’s Resurrection and to manifest his presence of love in the world today. contents The Order in Union with The Order and

ABSTRACT Community, Place, and Cultural Battles: Associational Life in Central Italy, 1945-1968 Laura J. Hornbake This dissertation is an exploration of associational life in central Italy, an examination of organizations that were central to the everyday experience of tens of thousands of Italians at a time when social, economic and geographical transformations were upending their everyday lives, 1945-1968. This dissertation examines facets of these transformations: the changing shape of cities, increasing mobility of people, technological changes that made possible new media and new cultural forms, from the perspective of local associations. The many lively groups, the cultural circles and case del popolo of central Italy were critical sites where members encountered new ideas, navigated social change, and experimented with alternative cultures. At the same time, these organizations themselves were being transformed from unitary centers that expressed the broad solidarity of the anti-fascist Resistance to loose federations of fragmentary single-interest groups. They were tangles of intertwined politics, culture, and community, important sites in culture

ON THE 30th ANNIVERSARY OF HIS DEATH* Josip KAJINIĆ** On the thirtieth anniversary of Cardinal Franjo Šeper’s death, this work presents some better and lesser-known facts and events from his life. Besides these facts, there is an analysis of Šeper’s role, both in the Catholic Church in Croatia and in the world. Certain aspects which have not thus far been sufficiently taken into consideration concerning Šeper’s activities are examined. Key words: Franjo Šeper, Catholic Church, Zagreb archbishop, cardinal, Vatican, Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith Introduction The activity of the Catholic Church in Croatia is a virtually inexhaustible historiographic source. This is why the activity of the Church as an institution and that of distinguished clerical officials who exerted a greater or lesser influ- ence on its work are both vital to historiography. In this regard, Franjo Šeper was certainly one of the Church’s most distinguished personalities. He began as a catechism instructor, and then became archdiocesan secretary, coadjutor * This paper is based on hitherto published data of several authors and research conducted within the framework of the scholarly project The Catholic Church in the Face of Ideology and Political Programmes at the Croatian Institute of History, led by Jure Krišto, Ph.D. ** Josip Kajinić, Croatian Institute of History, Zagreb, Republic of Croatia. 315 J. • Here in the Vatican, You Are, in a Certain Way, at Home
Here in the Vatican, you are, in a certain way, at home “Here in the Vatican, you are, in a certain way, at home, as you constitute an ancient Pontifical institution under the protection of the Holy See.”[1] These affectionate words, which Pope Francis addressed to the Members of the Consulta of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem on November 16, 2018, emphasise its identity and mission. The Order, by its very nature, is an instrument for the specific activities of the Holy See for the maintenance of the Latin Church in the Holy Land. This characteristic that our “ancient Pontifical institution”[2] has always had is now specified in the Statutes approved by Pope Francis on May 11, 2020, with the specific mention of “Central Body of the Church”[3], highlighting the constitutive contribution of the Order in the service of the Holy See in the government of the universal Church. Indeed, since time immemorial, «the Order has participated directly in the Holy See’s concern for the holy places and has embraced the Catholic institutions which work on the ground, as expressions of the Body of Christ present in the most vibrant reality: families, children, school pupils, pilgrims, works of charity and places of worship. We understand, then, the reason why the Holy Father wished to formally explain that the Order is a Central Body of the Catholic Church, that it has a public legal status in the canonical Order and that it is a legal entity of the Vatican.”[4] It is therefore necessary to rightly underline the ecclesial and pastoral character of this statutory clarification, because of the purposes of the Order.

SONS OF DON BOSCO SUCCESSORS OF THE APOSTLES SALESIAN BISHOPS 1884 to 2001 by Charles N. Bransom, Jr. INTRODUCTION he study of apostolic succession and episcopal lineages has long fascinated students of church history. It was not until the middle T of the twentieth century, however, that a systematic attempt was made to trace and catalogue the consecrations of bishops on a world-wide basis. A small group of researchers has catalogued the consecrations of tens of thou sands of bishops dating back many centuries. The fruits of their labors--labors that are on going-have resulted in a database, which can trace the episcopal lineage of any living bishop and the vast majority of deceased bishops. In 1984, I began a project on the episcopal ordinations of bishops of re ligious orders and congregations. One fruit of that work was a study of the ordi nations of Salesian bishops, Les Eveques Salesiens. The present work updates, corrects and expands the 1984 study. In 1984, the episcopal ordinations of 130 bishops were presented. This study contains the details of 196 bishops. The text has been expanded to include the episcopal lineages of the bishops. Of the 196 bishops in this study, 183 trace their orders to Scipione Re biba, who was appointed Auxiliary Bishop ofChieti in 1541. The Rebiban suc cession is the major episcopal line in the contemporary Catholic episcopate. More than 91 % of the more than 4,500 bishops alive today trace their orders 54 Journal of Salesian Studies back to Rebiba Why so many bishops should trace their lineages to this one bishop can be explained, in great part, by the intense sacramental activity of Pope Benedict XIII, who consecrated 139 bishops during his pontificate, many of them cardinals, nuncios and bishops of important sees who in tum conse crated many other bishops.
