1 Ad Gentes, Evangelii Nuntiandi, Redemptoris Missio and Dialogue
CHURCH TEACHING ON MISSION: Ad Gentes, Evangelii Nuntiandi, Redemptoris Missio and Dialogue and Proclamation Stephen Bevans, SVD Introduction This paper will summarize the church’s official teaching in the Roman Magisterium on the theology and conduct of its evangelizing mission. Rather than summarize each document, however, which would be quite tedious and repetitious, I will rather present the several aspects of each document that present new aspects to the Magisterium’s teaching on mission. The original request for this paper suggested that I look only at Evangelii Nuntiandi (EN) and Redemptoris Missio (RM). It seems to me, however, that a more rounded picture of contemporary church teaching on mission needs to start with Vatican II’s Decree on Missionary Activity, Ad Gentes and needs also to include the document issued shortly after RM by the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and the Pontifical Council for Dialogue, Dialogue and Proclamation (DP). This last document, issued in 1991, is now eighteen years old. Since then two other documents have been issued by the Roman Magisterium that are important for the church’s mission–Dominus Iesus in 2000 and Doctrinal Notes on Some Aspects of Evangelization in 2007,both issued by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. These, however, are more cautionary in tone and do not present any new or constructive teaching as such. I will refer to them towards the end of the paper, but only briefly. It might be helpful to read or refer to the major documents I am reflecting on here. They are all available in Latin, English, Spanish, German and Italian on the Vatican Website (vatican.va). -

PRAYING with the GRAND MASTER
ORDO EQUESTRIS SANCTI SEPULCHRI HIEROSOLYMITANI PRAYING with the GRAND MASTER By the Communications Office of the Grand Magisterium Brothers and Sisters of our Order, dig deep into your heart’s imagination to see, to realize that it is Jesus who inspires and encourages our mission today. Edwin Cardinal O’Brien Today too, becoming a Knight of the Holy Sepulchre means witnessing to the Kingdom of Christ, and spreading the Church as well as working for charity with the same profound spirit of faith and love. Are you prepared to accept this ideal for your life? From the Mass of Investiture 3 This booklet contains some reflections that could help guide the monthly meetings of the Delegations, Sections, Lieutenancies across the world and, at the same time, our personal prayer. Inspired by the words of the Grand Master, Cardinal Edwin O’Brien, we want to touch on the main points of our mission and calling as members of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre and we hope to do so communally: within our local realities as well as globally – in the knowledge that from Taiwan to Norway and from Alaska to South Africa the Knights and Dames are praying in communion; but also individually. In the following pages you will find twelve themes, one for each month of the year, that touch us closely. In a sort of annual monthly reflection, we can be accompanied in prayer by the meditations of Cardinal O’Brien and by practical reflections. Blessings on both your reading and your journey! 4 JANUARY Jerusalem erusalem is the city of promise but also of fulfillment, a city in Jwhich past, present and future take on a theological and at the same time extremely concrete dimension. -

The Holy See
The Holy See PASTORAL VISIT OF THE HOLY FATHER BENEDICT XVI TO "ST JOHN THE BAPTIST" ROMAN HOSPITAL OF THE SOVEREIGN MILITARY HOSPITALLER ORDER OF MALTA HOMILY OF HIS HOLINESS BENEDICT XVI First Sunday of Advent, 2 December 2007 Dear Brothers and Sisters, "Let us go to the house of the Lord!". These words that we repeated in the response of the Responsorial Psalm clearly express the feelings that fill our hearts today, the First Sunday of Advent. The reason why we can go ahead joyfully, as the Apostle Paul has exhorted us, lies in the fact that our salvation is now at hand. The Lord is coming! With this knowledge we set out on the journey of Advent, preparing ourselves to celebrate with faith the extraordinary event of the Lord's birth. In the coming weeks, day after day the liturgy will offer for our reflection Old Testament texts that recall the lively, constant desire that kept alive in the Jewish people the expectation of the Messiah's coming. Watchful in prayer, let us too seek to prepare our hearts to receive the Lord, who will come to show us his mercy and give us his salvation. Precisely during this time of waiting, Advent is a season of hope, and it is to Christian hope that I wished to dedicate my second Encyclical, officially presented the day before yesterday; it begins with the words St Paul addressed to the Christians of Rome: "Spe salvi facti sumus - in hope we were saved" (Rom 8: 24). In the Encyclical, I write among other things that "we need the greater and lesser hopes that keep us going day by day. -

The extensive timelines have been broken into ten stages, drawing attention to a number of periods and reasons in the history of those eras for the unique experience of vernacular liturgy and the issues connected with it in the Western Catholic Church of our time. The role and function of International Committee of English in the Liturgy (ICEL) over its forty year existence still has a major impact on the way we worship in English. This article deals with the restructuring of ICEL which had been the centre of much controversy in recent years and now operates under different protocols.
