GIVING AMERICA BACK THE BLUES OVERVIEW ESSENTIAL QUESTION How did the early Rolling Stones help popularize the Blues? OVERVIEW The Rolling Stones ultimately made their mark as the nonconformist outlaws of Rock and Roll. But before they were bad boys, the Stones were missionaries of the Blues. The young Rolling Stones — Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Charlie Watts, and Bill Wyman — were white kids who hailed from working- and middle-class Britain and set out to play American music, primarily that of African Americans with roots in the South. In so doing, they helped bring this music to a new, largely white audience, both in Britain and the United States. The young men who formed the Rolling Stones emerged from the club scene fostered by British Blues pioneers Cyril Davies and Alexis Korner. These two men and their band, Blues Incorporated, helped popularize the American Blues, whose raw intensity resonated with a generation of Britons who had grown up in the shadow of war, death, the Blitz, postwar rationing, and the hardening of the Cold War standoff. Much of the Stones’ early work consisted of faithful covers of American Blues artists that Davies, Korner, and the Stones venerated: Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Slim Harpo, Jimmy Reed. The early Stones in particular helped make the Blues wildly popular among young Britons. As the Stones’ fame grew and they became part of the mid-1960s British “invasion” of America, they also reintroduced the Blues to American listeners, most notably young, white audiences with limited exposure to the music. But almost from day one, the Stones were more than a Blues cover band. -

Interview with Paul Jones by Gianni Franchi, May 2016 SB: The first news that I've found about your career see you as a young harmonica player hangin' around London blues clubs with Brian Jones. Can you tell us something about those times? PJ: I was more of a singer than harmonica-player in those days; I had a job singing with a dance- band. I had bought a harmonica after hearing Junior Wells playing on a T-Bone Walker track – but I couldn’t get anywhere near the sounds Junior was making. Brian showed me how to play ‘cross- harp’, or as it’s called these days, 2nd position. SB: How did you learn to play the harmonica, how you did you passionate about blues music, and who was your favourite harp player ? PJ: I had been a jazz enthusiast since I was 14, but after hearing Lonnie Donegan’s record of ‘Rock Island Line’, I quickly became immersed in the blues – the more you hear, the more you love. Once Brian’s lesson had sunk in to my thinking, I listened to all harmonica blues, and Muddy Waters’ harpman at the time, James Cotton, became my favourite. But the more I studied, the more I loved and followed the great Little Walter – with Sonny Boy Williamson II close behind. SB: In 1962 you became the singer and harp player of the Manfred Mann , a fantastic band that mixed blues, R & B with jazz instrumental songs. What can you tell us about that experience and why at a certain point you decided to leave the band? PJ: People never ask why I joined those guys in the first place – only why I left. -

London's Longest Running Blues Festival Is
PRESS RELEASE: LONDON’S LONGEST RUNNING BLUES FESTIVAL IS BACK! AND BIGGER THAN EVER! 22-23 July 2017 - 30 years old this year! Founded in 1987, the 30th birthday of the Ealing Blues Festival will take place in Walpole Park, Ealing, on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd July, with music performances between 12.00pm – 10.30pm across three stages. Proudly presented in the London Borough which boasts the location of Ealing Club, meeting place of The Rolling Stones and where Alexis Korner & Cyril Davies started the country’s first dedicated electric Blues Club in 1962, thus giving birth to British Rock Music. The 2017 headline acts are Mungo Jerry and The Blockheads, alongside an array of the best up and coming and established acts in British Blues. The Ealing Blues Festival prides itself on its affordability, with the admission price pegged below £10 per day, making it possibly the ‘best value’ event of its kind. This contributes to the festival being highly family-friendly, with the advantages and facilities that a well- managed park has to offer. The main stage is within an open sided circus tent providing shade when it’s hot and wet weather cover when it’s not. The Festival is served by a wide selection of food stalls and large bar area. Brian Jones – Authenticity and Significance By Christian Botta The Rolling Stones’ guitarist and founder Brian Jones’ importance as a blues player is hard to define. At once a skilled multi-instrumentalist and an iconic symbol of sixties’ excess, he was also a central figure in the British Blues Boom, from which the group began. Because of his early death, the rapidly evolving nature of the Stones’ music in the 1960s, and his being overshadowed by blues players such as Eric Clapton, Jones’ legacy as a blues musician is enigmatic. This paper will take a look at Jones’ work and decide whether or not he was one of the important British blues players of the 1960s. Brian Jones began his career as an acolyte of the British blues scene that began to flower in London around the late 1950s, sitting in on slide guitar with bands like Alexis Korner’s Blues Incorporated. He was one of the first Britons to master slide guitar,1 and was considered to be one of the best blues harmonica players on the scene, as well.2 At the start, he was a blues purist in a milieu that was finding its way with great energy and enthusiasm. But the forces of pop stardom and the creative and competitive drive of Jones’ band mates Mick Jagger and Keith Richards eventually came to bear on Jones’ focus on the blues. What was Brian Jones’ importance to the spread of blues to the world at large and especially to musicians? Who did he influence? How authentic was his playing of the blues? This writer believes that Jones was a significant figure in the British Blues Boom and that he had an effect on American musicians, as well, and that his music has a degree of authenticity. -

Billy Bragg explains, “…[Barber’s] role in inspiring the world-beating British groups of the 1960s cannot be overestimated." Nick Lowe goes even further to suggest that, “without Chris Barber, the sum total of Britain's contribution to popular music would be ‘Green Door’ by Frankie Vaughan.” MEMORIES OF MY TRIP is the only collection of Barber’s rare collaborations in existence.
