We now have 2.5 acres of Montepulciano planted to four different blocks on our winery ranch. This wine comes from our first vineyard block near the creek, and a block we planted in 2007. The vines are planted to 4’ X 6’ spacing on 101-14 and 420-A rootstock. We believe our climate in Dry Creek is similar to the cooler hillside sites in Abruzzo resulting in a Montepulciano with brighter fruit and acidity. VINTAGE/HARVEST: 2015 was another excellent vintage for Montepulciano. The 2015 growing season featured drought-like growing conditions in the spring and summer. The warm and dry conditions allowed us to harvest our Montepulciano grapes early (September 29 - October 10th) with ideal sugar/acid numbers. Montepulciano is a vigorous vine, thus we routinely drop about 40-50% of the crop for uniform ripening, depth, and complexity. WINEMAKING: We fermented this Montepulciano in small open top tanks. It was de-stemmed, lightly crushed, and kept below 60 degrees for several days prior to spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeast.

    WINE NO. 1 Margins Counoise 96% Counoise + 4% Mourvèdre Sattler’s Vineyard, Santa Clara Valley, California 2020 RE-ORDER: $27 GRAPE: COUNOISE [ku-nwaz ] Counoise is a unique menu item from the Southern Rhône, not typically served à la carte but as a spicy ingredient added to blends. It is one of the 13 grapes allowed in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, but it makes up barely a fraction of its vines. There are only a handful of plantings in California, but as it is vigorous and loves the warm and semi-arid Rhône valley, it may be catching on. It is sort of a goldilocks grape, not too dark in color, not too high in acid, tannin or alcohol, and that hint of cracked pepper is juuuust right. WINEMAKER: Margins’ name reflects the idea that vineyards, grapes, and regions can be outcasts just like underrepresented folks in society. Margins is the work of Megan Bell, seeking to give much deserved attention to the “other” vineyards and varietals throughout northern California. Her small project is based in the Santa Cruz Mountains but she has experience all over the world: apprenticing in Napa, Livermore Valley, Willamette Valley, New Zealand, and the Loire Valley, and receiving a BS in Vit and Enology from UC Davis. She works with growers to transition to organic farming by providing informed advice, and assurance that their grapes have a home in her cellar. The Counoise comes from Ed Sattler’s 2.7 acre backyard vineyard planted in 2009 - a hot, dry site with an intense diurnal swing (and not quite enough elevation to make it in the SCM AVA.) They’ve been converting to organic and this is one of Megan’s proudest accomplishments.

    1 Student questions: Chris Loxton’s colloquium on “Science and the Art of Winemaking” 1/11/17 Question 1: What are the most common mistakes that rockies make? Rookies sometimes make the mistake of making too much wine, or making a style of wine that they like, but which not enough consumers like, and in both cases, they can’t sell enough money to keep up cash flow and then get into financial difficulty. I sometimes also see inconsistency in style. Without the proper training, they make a few good wines, but then in a bad year (with rain, for example), make some mistakes and the wine quality is less, and then they can’t sell it fast enough and again this leads to cash flow problems. Question 2: I would have never guessed that the surrounding temperature and allitude has a lot to deal with what kind of wine you will be making. What areas in Arizona would be ideal for wine making? An ideal climate would have not so much rain in late summer near harvest, very little frost danger in Spring, and enough water to be able to irrigate when necessary and not be too hot in summer (the degree day requirements for grapes mean that you want just enough heat for ripening, but not too much). All this means that there are areas in the foothills south of Tucson and other areas in Southern AZ that are suitable, and some near 3000 foor elevation near Sedona, for example, that should be suitable.     2012 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Cantine Innocenti, Montepulciano, Tuscany, Italy The Wine: 100% Prugnolo Gentile, a very rare and unique clone of San- giovese that is well suited for the clay based soils of Mon- tepulciano. This single vineyard wine was produced from or- ganically grown grapes and aged for 24 months in French oak. With just under 4,000 bottles produced each year the winery is able to do every aspect of winemaking and harvesting by hand. The Estate: Owned and farmed by Vittorio Innocenti, this family run property produces only Sangiovese based red wines from the Montepulciano D.O.C.G. All organically farmed, the vines are non-irrigated and trained to keep extremely low yields. Vittorio brings over 50 years of winemaking experience and family tra- ditions passed down over many generations. This is classic Old-World style Sangiovese from the town known for centu- ries as the wine for the noble men of Tuscany. Vittorio turned 80 years old in 2019 and is passing on his years of experience to his son Tomasso who will be taking over the production at the winery in the next decade.     Beringer Classics WHITE ZINFANDEL VINEYARDS The coordination between viticulture and winemaking teams is essential when choosing fruit, to achieve the optimum level of avor and balance in the wine. The vineyards selected for the Beringer Classics wines are bathed in warm sunshine the majority of the day, to yield the most ripe, sun-kissed fruit avors in the grapes. WINEMAKING NOTES Winemaking begins in the vineyard and often peaks with the harvest of the grapes that have been carefully tended all year long. Grapes for the Beringer Classics White Zinfandel were picked at the peak of maturity and brought into the winery for gentle crushing. By keeping the juice in contact with the grapes’ red skins for approximately three hours, a light blush color was retained. Beringer’s winemakers then used slow, cool fermentations to preserve the vibrant, fresh strawberry, honeydew, and citrus aromas and avors. TASTING NOTES In making Beringer’s White Zinfandel, the focus is to highlight the fresh red berry, citrus and melon aromas and avors, and round them out with subtle hints of nutmeg and clove. The wine has a youthful exuberance that is enjoyable as a sipper on its own, or with a variety of dishes. Alcohol: 10% Beringer Classics wines boast some of the best-selling wines in the country.
