  • Two Recurring Themes Populate the Kingdom Hearts Series: 1. True Power Comes from Friendship and Connections with Others 2
Two recurring themes populate the Kingdom Hearts series: 1. True power comes from friendship and connections with others 2. Women are useless The protagonist of the game is Sora, but first, background: Kingdom Hearts is the heart of all worlds and a source of immense power. It is controlled by a weapon called the x-blade (not to be confused with keyblade), which acts as its key. Long ago thousands of people used keyblades (not to be confused with the x-blade), magical weapons that can lock and unlock stuff and also have lots of other powers, to fight for control of the x-blade (not to be confused with the keyblades, which they already had). In the process the world was split into lots of different pieces which were then walled off from each other with a substance called gummi. In the less-distant past, Xehanort, a boy from Destiny Islands, escapes his tiny world and becomes a keyblade master in his own right. He learned that there are many worlds (which is supposed to be a secret) because Xehanort-from-the-present sends a version of himself back in time to tell him about it and then tells him to travel to a bunch of different places because time travel requires that a version of one’s self must be present at the time and place. More on that later. He’s friends with Eraqus and Yen Sid who are also keyblade masters, but then they aren’t friends anymore because Xehanort is evil (but later he pretends to be good).

  • 1 You're Listening to Imaginary Worlds, a Show About How We Create Them
1 You're listening to imaginary worlds, a show about how we create them and why we suspend our disbelief. I'm Eric Molinsky I recently did a call out on social media asking for suggestions of topics to explore. A few people mentioned Sailor Moon – the classic anime series from the ‘90s -- because there’s a new two-part Sailor Moon movie on Netflix. People suggested that I look into the queer content of Sailor Moon and why it was so groundbreaking and controversial. And I said – wait, what? I remember when Sailor Moon came on Cartoon Network in the late ‘90s. I was studying animation at CalArts, and these women in my program were painting murals of Sailor Moon on the walls of the dorms. It was the first time I had seen the characters with their big eyes, long hair, long legs, and short skirts, and I thought it was like the anime equivalent to The Spice Girls – fun, empowering but not subversive. I was so wrong. Although I think I got that impression because the American and Canadians companies that dubbed different seasons Sailor Moon did everything they could to censor the queer content. But it was still there. Sara Century is a journalist who wrote about Sailor Moon for the website Syfy. She was in junior high when the show came to American TV. SARA: It was definitely around this time where I was definitely coming into my queerness, like at least a little bit, like it was a long and winding road as it is for so many people.

  • The Effects of Disney Princess Movies on Girls
The Effects of Disney Princess Movies on Girls By Camille Porter-Phillips Eighth grade project research paper Hilltown Cooperative Charter Public School June 2014 1 Introduction Personally, before this project, I thought that the Disney princesses were foolish. People have been watching Disney movies for nearly 100 years and through the course of this project I realized that they are actually really foolish and my beliefs were affirmed. Since the Walt Disney company started in 1923 (Gillies), its movies have become very widespread and pervasive. My question is, have Disney princess movies affected girls? In this essay I will show that watching princess movies affects girls’ independence and body image. I will first give a background of Disney and their princesses, then show how the princess films might affect girls and then describe how to evaluate them. Background The first princess movie the Walt Disney company produced was Snow White, in 1937. It was the first animated feature film to come out of the0 U.S. (Disney). Next came Cinderella, in 1950. Then Sleeping Beauty in 1959. Thirty years later in 1989 The Little Mermaid came out. Then in 1991 Beauty and the Beast. The very next year in 1992 Aladdin came to theaters. Then Pocahontas, in 1995. But this was not the last one, more and more princess movies are produced by Disney every few years. Snow White is about a girl who runs away from an evil queen because the queen wants to kill Snow White. When she meets 12 dwarfs she is happy to cook and take care of them.

  • Fiscal Year 2015 Annual Financial Report and Shareholder Letter 10DEC201511292957
6JAN201605190975 Fiscal Year 2015 Annual Financial Report And Shareholder Letter 10DEC201511292957 10DEC201400361461 Dear Shareholders, The Force was definitely with us this year! Fiscal 2015 was another triumph across the board in terms of creativity and innovation as well as financial performance. For the fifth year in a row, The Walt Disney Company delivered record results with revenue, net income and earnings per share all reaching historic highs once again. It’s an impressive winning streak that speaks to our continued leadership in the entertainment industry, the incredible demand for our brands and franchises, and the special place our storytelling has in the hearts and lives of millions of people around the world. All of which is even more remarkable when you remember that Disney first started entertaining audiences almost a century ago. The world certainly looks a lot different than it did when Walt Disney first opened shop in 1923, and so does the company that bears his name. Our company continues to evolve with each generation, mixing beloved characters and storytelling traditions with grand new experiences that are relevant to our growing global audience. Even though we’ve been telling our timeless stories for generations, Disney maintains the bold, ambitious heart of a company just getting started in a world full of promise. And it’s getting stronger through strategic acquisitions like Pixar, Marvel and Lucasfilm that continue to bring new creative energy across the company as well as the constructive disruptions of this dynamic digital age that unlock new opportunities for growth. Our willingness to challenge the status quo and embrace change is one of our greatest strengths, especially in a media market rapidly transforming with each new technology or consumer trend.

  • Subcultural Appropriation of Disney Normative Characters in Countercultural Performance Responses Brady Mcdonough, Communicating Arts Dr
Subcultural Appropriation of Disney Normative Characters in Countercultural Performance Responses Brady McDonough, Communicating Arts Dr. Alison Wielgus, Department of Communicating Arts University of Wisconsin Superior Introduction Walt Disney is remembered fondly as “Uncle Walt” who re-told fairy tales in ways that were less gruesome than their originals and moved audiences to laughter and tears. Disney’s hard upbringing led to his strict personal belief system that reinforced proper behavior and a heterosexual, nuclear family structure. Fantasy was Disney’s favorite escape as a child, and he loved telling stories as an adult so much that he made it a wildly successful business. Starting in 1923 as Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio, Walt Disney began with animated shorts before eventually moving into feature-length productions. The power to reach audiences comes with the ability to convey a worldview to the public. Disney used his adaptations of fairy tales from authors such as the Brothers Grimm, Charles Perrault, and Hans Christian Anderson to entertain and teach children and adults what the perfect fantasy world could be. Disney’s versions of classic fairy tales supported a white, heterosexual, Judeo-Christian worldview known as heteronormativity. This heteronormative culture maintains a dominant status in American society called hegemony. Dominant cultures often inspire the formation of subcultures whose members do not fit the hegemonic normative culture. This paper will incorporate the work of Dick Hebdige and Judith Butler to explain subcultural creation and modes of response to hegemony, specifically through drag’s appropriation of characters. Character traits being normalized or vilified is in issue of semiotics, meaning the signs of characters and traits signify one as “good” or “evil” dependent on their performance of certain characteristics.
