The Village of Harmony Manor• 15050 Birwood Street • Detroit, Michigan 48238-1604 www.pvm.org Living in Harmony | The Village of Harmony Manor Page 5 During a recent visit to the Village of Sage Grove in Kalamazoo, Administrator Paula Hager took me for a stroll through their community garden to see their newly planted Living Memorial Tree. The idea for the tree sprang from a comment Paula overheard during the funeral of a resident who had recently died. Reflecting on the person who had passed, she heard someone remark, “we should plant a tree.” That simple comment put into motion what this spring and summer became a community wide effort to create an accessible space on the Sage Grove campus to honor the residents who spent the last years of their lives at the Village. A local supplier provided the concrete for the walkway; a local contractor provided the labor to build the walkway; and a local nursery provided the tree. Others donated anonymously to the project. In the end, the Village of Sage Grove did more than just plant a tree. They mobilized the community; built a lasting memorial to past residents and created a space for current residents and others to renew themselves spiritually. When it comes to wellness, you hear a lot about body and mind but seldom hear about spirit. That’s why I decided to share the news about Sage Grove’s Living Memorial Tree with you. If you would to learn more about the project you can reach Paula at (269) 567-330 or via email at [email protected] The Village of Harmony Manor• 15050 Birwood Street • Detroit, Michigan 48238-1604 www.pvm.org Living in Harmony | The Village of Harmony Manor Page 6 Upcoming Events in Detroit TOP 10 TO REMEMBER 1) FOBS Are For Residents Only 2) Do Not Open the Door/Allow Strangers Into the Building September 1-5, 2016 (Thur-Mon) Michigan State Fair at Suburban Collection 3) Wear Your Life Line Showplace in Novi, MI (northwest of Detroit). Thanks to YOU, that’s a choice seniors may not have to face. Too many hard-working Americans are just a health crisis away from financial ruin. Many have outlived their retirement earnings—the earnings they spent years working for. Many don’t have a relative nearby or a place to turn if finances fail. But they have hope. They have YOU. Because of generous donors, the PVM Foundation can offer Benevolence and Resident Assistance. These unwavering commitments help those who have outlived their financial resources. They ensure that residents can continue to have a home, get through an emergency, or simply afford basic medical needs—like glasses.

Automatic Movie Analysis and Summarisation Philip John Gorinski I V N E R U S E I T H Y T O H F G E R D I N B U Doctor of Philosophy Institute for Language, Cognition and Computation School of Informatics University of Edinburgh 2017 Abstract Automatic movie analysis is the task of employing Machine Learning methods to the field of screenplays, movie scripts, and motion pictures to facilitate or enable vari- ous tasks throughout the entirety of a movie’s life-cycle. From helping with making informed decisions about a new movie script with respect to aspects such as its origi- nality, similarity to other movies, or even commercial viability, all the way to offering consumers new and interesting ways of viewing the final movie, many stages in the life-cycle of a movie stand to benefit from Machine Learning techniques that promise to reduce human effort, time, or both.

Selling the Second Cold War: Antinuclear Cultural Activism and Reagan Era Foreign Policy A dissertation presented to the faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences of Ohio University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy William M. KNOBLAUCH has been approved for the Department of History and the College of Arts and Sciences by __________________________________ Chester J. Pach Associate Professor of History __________________________________ Howard Dewald Dean, College of Arts and Sciences 3 ABSTRACT KNOBLAUCH, WILLIAM M., Ph.D., March 2012, History Selling the Second Cold War: Antinuclear Cultural Activism and Reagan Era Foreign Policy Director of Dissertation: Chester J. Pach This dissertation examines how 1980s antinuclear activists utilized popular culture to criticize the Reagan administration’s arms buildup. The 1970s and the era of détente marked a decade-long nadir for American antinuclear activism. Ronald Reagan’s rise to the presidency in 1981 helped to usher in the “Second Cold War,” a period of reignited Cold War animosities that rekindled atomic anxiety. As the arms race escalated, antinuclear activism surged. Alongside grassroots movements, such as the nuclear freeze campaign, a unique group of antinuclear activists—including publishers, authors, directors, musicians, scientists, and celebrities—challenged Reagan’s military buildup in American mass media and popular culture. These activists included Fate of the Earth author Jonathan Schell, Day After director Nicholas Meyer, and “nuclear winter” scientific-spokesperson Carl Sagan.

  • By Noel Carroll
THE MOVIES - .. by Noel Carroll Vampires from outer space, pirate treasure, time machines, cowboys defending homesteaders, dinosaurs, a half-naked warrior vanquishing hordes of enemies, a house that turns into the biggest popcorn machine in history. These are the images you would have seen in some of Holly- wood's major productions of the past year-in Lifeforce, The Goo- nies, Back to the Future, Silverado, My Science Project, Rambo: First Blood Part 11, and Real Genius. This list may remind some older Americans of the kinds of movie choices they faced when they were children during the 1930s, '40s, or '50s. Those films could be neatly defined-as science fiction, horror, Westerns, war pictures, and slapstick comedies. For critics and movie-makers, these labels, along with others, such as musicals, mysteries, and thrillers, sort out the major film "genres." A decade and a half ago, the genre film seemed close to becom- ing an endangered species. Hollywood had largely turned away from the old standbys, seemingly forever (although it still produced a fair number of them), in favor of more experimental films in the vein of Steelyard Blues and Five Easy Pieces. "What these films-and oth- ers-had in common," writes Arthur Knight, a film historian, "was their articulation of contemporary attitudes and emotions, in a lan- guage that had its own modem rhythms and nuances." But Hollywood attentively follows ticket sales at the box office, and by the mid-1970s, the movie-going public was telling studio exec- utives that it wanted old-fashioned genre films again.

  • Staging Orson Welles
STAGING ORSON WELLES Matthew Christopher Gretzinger A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY December 2010 Committee: Dr. Jonathan Chambers, Advisor Dr. Stephannie Gearhart Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Scott Magelssen Dr. Cynthia Baron ii ABSTRACT Dr. Jonathan Chambers, Advisor In this study I consider the legacy of Orson Welles as a stage figure puppeted in a collective theatre of memory. The study builds on Jonathan Rosenbaum's observation that Welles remains a "mythical and ideological creature" and a "site for the acting out of various fantasies." Referencing Marvin Carlson's The Haunted Stage and Joseph Roach's Cities of the Dead, I apply their insights to three plays that feature Welles as a pivotal character: Jason Sherman's It's All True, Austin Pendleton's Orson's Shadow, and the Naomi Iizuka-Anne Bogart collaboration, War of the Worlds. My central concern is to consider the ways we remember and stage Welles and, in light of Rosenbaum's insight, to also question the myths and ideologies those stagings act out. A corollary to my interrogation of Welles's stage figure as a site of memory is my conviction that the collective memory of Welles's life and work might be staged more usefully. The plays considered approach Welles from different perspectives. However, all – to varying degrees – assess negative judgments. Welles's legacy has been subject to conflicting interpretations, and the arbitration of his historical and remembered significance is a process with important consequences.
