From helping with making informed decisions about a new movie script with respect to aspects such as its origi- nality, similarity to other movies, or even commercial viability, all the way to offering consumers new and interesting ways of viewing the final movie, many stages in the life-cycle of a movie stand to benefit from Machine Learning techniques that promise to reduce human effort, time, or both.

American Studies, University of Massachusetts Boston A Jewish-created urban and cosmopolitan working girl feminism persisted in the 1950s as a cultural alternative to the suburban, domestic consumerism critiqued so eloquently by Betty Friedan in The Feminine Mystique . The film persona of Jewish, Academy Award-winning actress Judy Holliday embodied this working girl feminism. Audiences viewed her portrayals of popular front working girl heroines in three films written by the Jewish writer and director Garson Kanin, sometimes in association with his wife, the actress Ruth Gordon, and directed by the Jewish director George Cukor in the early 1950s: Born Yesterday (1950), The Marrying Kind (1952), and It Should Happen to You (1954).

  • Everything Began with the Movie Moulin Rouge (2001)
Introduction Everything began with the movie Moulin Rouge (2001). Since I was so obsessed with this hit film, I couldn’t but want to know more about this particular genre - musical films. Then I started to trace the history of this genre back to Hollywood’s classical musical films. It’s interesting that musical films have undergone several revivals and are usually regarded as the products of escapism. Watching those protagonists singing and dancing happily, the audience can daydream freely and forget about the cruel reality. What are the aesthetic artifices of this genre so enchanting that it always catches the eye of audience generation after generation? What kinds of ideal life do these musical films try to depict? Do they (musical films) merely escape from reality or, as a matter of fact, implicitly criticize the society? In regard to the musical films produced by Hollywood, what do they reflect the contemporary social, political or economic situations? To investigate these aspects, I start my research project on the Hollywood musical film genre from the 1950s (its Classical Period) to 2002. However, some people might wonder that among all those Hollywood movies, what is so special about the musical films that makes them distinguish from the other types of movies? On the one hand, the musical film genre indeed has several important contributions to the Hollywood industry, and its influence never wanes even until today. In need of specialty for musical film production, many talented professional dancers and singers thus get the chances to join in Hollywood and prove themselves as great actors (actresses), too.

  • The Graduate - If You Are New Here, Welcome to the Laguna Playhouse Family!
From the Executive Director ELLEN RICHARD From the Executive Director ELLEN RICHARD Dear Friends, As part of our annual core-curriculum tour to schools this spring, we are pleased to be bringing Stuart Little and By The Great Horn Spoon to 56 schools across Orange County, most of which are Title One. Our award-winning program, TheatreReach – Bringing Books to Life is designed to deepen and strengthen scholastic engagement with literature and in-school workshops. Over 7,000 lives will be touched with this incredible gift that was underwritten by Jamie Walters El-Erian and Mohamed El-Erian. I also want to thank Bobbi Cox and Terry and Toni McDonald for supporting this program for many years. Last year, Jim and Suzanne Mellor created a program designed to develop future audiences. The Mellor Ticket program offers those 21 and under the opportunity to enjoy live theatre for free. So far, more than 2,300 young people have taken advantage of our Mellor Ticket program during this season. This year, we created a new program titled THEATRE HOPE. We thank the Gimbel Foundation, O.L. Hasell, and The Ueberroth Foundation for funding this new gift to support audiences that would not otherwise be able to attend the theatre. THEATRE HOPE provides tickets, buses, workshops and meals to children at risk, disabled adults and people in recovery. Our Conservatory youth program provides theatre training to dozens of young people. In addition to training, students participate either on-stage or in the wings for three mainstage youth productions. Upcoming is A Little Princess.

KNOBLAUCH has been approved for the Department of History and the College of Arts and Sciences by __________________________________ Chester J. Pach Associate Professor of History __________________________________ Howard Dewald Dean, College of Arts and Sciences 3 ABSTRACT KNOBLAUCH, WILLIAM M., Ph.D., March 2012, History Selling the Second Cold War: Antinuclear Cultural Activism and Reagan Era Foreign Policy Director of Dissertation: Chester J. Pach This dissertation examines how 1980s antinuclear activists utilized popular culture to criticize the Reagan administration’s arms buildup. The 1970s and the era of détente marked a decade-long nadir for American antinuclear activism. Ronald Reagan’s rise to the presidency in 1981 helped to usher in the “Second Cold War,” a period of reignited Cold War animosities that rekindled atomic anxiety. As the arms race escalated, antinuclear activism surged. Alongside grassroots movements, such as the nuclear freeze campaign, a unique group of antinuclear activists—including publishers, authors, directors, musicians, scientists, and celebrities—challenged Reagan’s military buildup in American mass media and popular culture. These activists included Fate of the Earth author Jonathan Schell, Day After director Nicholas Meyer, and “nuclear winter” scientific-spokesperson Carl Sagan.
