thoracicsurgeryfoundation.org/donate 2 Dear Colleagues, Patients, and Friends:

It has been my privilege to serve as President of The Thoracic Surgery Foundation (TSF) for the past year. This time has afforded me the opportunity to learn and experience first-hand the generosity of the members of our specialty in supporting the Foundation’s research and education initiatives.

2019 was a great year for the Foundation. More than $1 million was awarded to 109 surgeons for grants and scholarships. The Foundation’s established role as The Society of Thoracic Surgeon’s charitable arm has strengthened our fundraising potential and covered our administrative costs, enabling us to have a greater impact with our mission.

A Message from I am so grateful to you, our wonderful donors, who make everything we do possible. the President From exemplary patient care to groundbreaking research to educating the next generation of cardiothoracic leaders, you are the heart and soul of all our endeavors.

TSF is truly YOUR Foundation. Research grants, fellowships, and educational scholarships from TSF represent all of our disciplines (cardiac, general thoracic, and congenital) and surgeons at all career stages. The Foundation’s awards have been instrumental in developing hundreds of young surgeons by providing the support needed for their career advancement. These awards also have been important stepping stones in furthering innovation in cardiothoracic surgery.

If you have not given to the Foundation recently, I urge you to consider doing so now. And, if you generously donated in 2019, please consider another gift at this time. Let’s make 2020 TSF’s best year yet. You can click here or anywhere on the bottom of each page to make an online donation. Your generosity will help us ensure a bright future for surgeon-scientists and excellent care for our patients.

Thank you for your continued support of TSF. Joseph E. Bavaria, MD, FRCS(Ed) 2019–2020 TSF President

TSF Research Awards support academic and research career development for future leaders in cardiothoracic surgery. These awards identify, promote, and fund talented young cardiothoracic surgeons and residents working to create the future of our specialty through research and innovation. This year, the Foundation funded $600,000 in research awards supporting projects in topics as diverse as improving the outcomes of heart transplantation through the induction of tolerance and mitochondrial transplantation, the use of artificial intelligence/machine learning for echocardiogram interpretation and risk stratification, and cell transfer as a therapy for lung cancer. These and other innovative projects funded by TSF will have a profound impact in our specialty and improve the care of our patients.

These grants are funded through the contributions of hundreds of cardiothoracic A Message from the surgeons and corporations. Their philanthropy and generosity allow these Research Chair outstanding researchers to implement their ideas and launch their careers. Since its inception, TSF has been able to provide the initial funding support that has allowed multiple cardiothoracic surgeons to attract larger grants from the NIH, the NSF, and other agencies.

Members of the TSF Research Committee are experts in the field of cardiothoracic surgery research. They spent innumerable hours reviewing, scoring, and discussing the applications. I’d like to recognize their selfless efforts and dedication to promoting cardiothoracic surgery research and the careers of the future leaders in the specialty.

I’d also like to congratulate the 2019 TSF Research Award recipients, who are acknowledged in this report, and express my most profound gratitude to the donors, members of the Research Committee, and the Foundation as a whole, for the privilege and honor to serve as the Research Committee Chair.

LEMAIRE, MD Subramanian, MD TSF Board of Directors Thoralf M. Sundt, MD The mission of the Foundation is so important. The first part of the mission is to develop Francis P. Sutter, DO cardiothoracic surgeon-scientists. They will be the investigators who help us better Lars G. Svensson, MD, PhD* understand the causes of and treatments for cardiothoracic disease and help us to provide James F. Symes, MD better care in the future. The second part of the Foundation’s mission is to provide better Stanley K.C. Tam, MD patient care through four main avenues—research, education, global outreach, and Christo I. Tchervenkov, MD innovation. In order for us to deliver better care in the future, it is important to support Terumo Aortic the people who are in training now, as well as support ongoing research efforts. This is an David F. Torchiana, MD incredibly important part of what’s going to make our specialty better in the future. Gregory D. Trachiotis, MD Alfredo Trento, MD WHY I GIVE: I have a personal reason for giving. It was my deep desire to give back to Bernard L. Tucker, MD the Foundation that played such an important part in my own career. In 2005, I was a James S. Tweddell, MD grateful recipient of a TSF grant that was cosponsored by NIH. This helped me develop the University of Iowa research skills I needed to create a research program focused on thoracic aortic disease University of Pennsylvania and help launch my career. I can’t even begin to imagine what I’d be doing right now if I University of Virginia hadn’t received that initial grant in 2005. So contributing to the Foundation, both in terms USC Cardiothoracic of leadership and in giving donations to the Foundation, is an important way I can give back Surgeons for everything that it’s done for me.
