These youths are disproportionately Black, and this condition often goes untreated. Consequently, their challenges with PTSD can surface and have tremendous impacts on teaching and learning at the schools they attend. These impacts include severe problems with academic achievement and discipline. The site of this research is a public, urban continuation high school in Northern California where many students exhibit symptoms of PTSD. -

MICHAEL MORTENSON Three Minutes he Conoco gas station was deserted when I rolled up. TSixteen fully-functioning, state-certified gas pumps and no one was interested, poor things. Surely, I couldn’t be the only one traveling along this desert stretch of I-15 with a thirsty car. I glanced across the street to the big, red-and-white num - bers on the Shell sign: $2.69 a gallon. Same exact price as the Conoco. No economic excuse for this empty gas station. I eased the car up to the nearest pump and the brakes let out an inglo - rious screeching, like a cheese grater on a chalkboard. I got out of the car and stretched. Oh, the glory of arching my back and reaching my arms to the sky! Fishing my squashed wallet from my pocket, I inserted a card into the machine. The gas pump gave an obstinate beep and spit the card back out. Its display flickered dimly, then went blank. Maybe it hadn’t read my card right. I re-inserted the card, only for the machine to spit it right back out again like a two-year-old with Gerber peas. I guess there are those that just can’t stomach Wells Fargo. I gave the keypad a couple of jabs, hoping—though not really expecting—that I might prod some sensibility into the 61 T HE R ESTORED G OSPEL machine. Meep . meep . meep . went the machine. No luck. I shoved my wallet back into my pocket. Fine. Be that way. I drove the car around to another pump. -

The Korean Internet Freak Community and Its Cultural Politics, 2002–2011 by Sunyoung Yang A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Anthropology University of Toronto © Copyright by Sunyoung Yang Year of 2015 The Korean Internet Freak Community and Its Cultural Politics, 2002–2011 Sunyoung Yang Doctor of Philosophy Department of Anthropology University of Toronto 2015 Abstract In this dissertation I will shed light on the interwoven process between Internet development and neoliberalization in South Korea, and I will also examine the formation of new subjectivities of Internet users who are also becoming neoliberal subjects. In particular, I examine the culture of the South Korean Internet freak community of DCinside.com and the phenomenon I have dubbed “loser aesthetics.” Throughout the dissertation, I elaborate on the meaning-making process of self-reflexive mockery including the labels “Internet freak” and “surplus (human)” and gender politics based on sexuality focusing on gender ambiguous characters, called Nunhwa, as a means of collective identity-making, and I explore the exploitation of unpaid immaterial labor through a collective project making a review book of a TV drama Painter of the Wind. The youth of South Korea emerge as the backbone of these creative endeavors as they try to find their place in a precarious labor market that has changed so rapidly since the 1990s that only the very best succeed, leaving a large group of disenfranchised and disillusioned youth. I go on to explore the impact of late industrialization and the Asian financial crisis, and the nationalistic desire not be left behind in the age of informatization, but to be ahead of the curve. -

They came from such diverse professional backgrounds and from very different countries and cultures. Yet the meetings and discussions were extremely harmonious and the process of selection remarkably consensual. And finally, did their books speak to children? Were these creators people whose books could be read by children all over the world, be accessible and meaningful to them, and enrich their lives and understanding? This research focused on how three agencies – the government, public broadcasting, and the culture industry – have negotiated their relationships in the process of globalization, and how the power dynamics of these three production sectors have been influenced by Korean society’s politics, economy, geography, and culture. The importance of the national media system was identified in the (re)production of the Korean Wave phenomenon by examining how public broadcasting-centered media ecology has control over the development of the popular music culture within Korean society. The Korean Broadcasting System (KBS)’s weekly show, Music Bank, was the subject of analysis regarding changes in the culture of media production in the phase of globalization. In-depth interviews with media professionals and consumers who became involved in the show production were conducted in order to grasp the patterns that Korean television has generated in the global expansion of local cultural practices. -

Bennett*a Received 3rd September 2009, Accepted 6th November 2009 First published as an Advance Article on the web 5th January 2010 DOI: 10.1039/b918213f In this paper we present a numerical and experimental investigation of a chaotic mixer in a microchannel via low frequency switching transverse electroosmotic flow. By applying a low frequency, square-wave electric field to a pair of parallel electrodes placed at the bottom of the channel, a complex 3D spatial and time-dependence flow was generated to stretch and fold the fluid. This significantly enhanced the mixing effect. The mixing mechanism was first investigated by numerical and experimental analysis. The effects of operational parameters such as flow rate, frequency, and amplitude of the applied voltage have also been investigated. It is found that the best mixing performance is achieved when the frequency is around 1 Hz, and the required mixing length is about 1.5 mm for the case of applied electric potential 5 V peak-to-peak and flow rate 75 mLhÀ1. The mixing performance was significantly enhanced when the applied electric potential increased or the flow rate of fluids decreased.
