  • Elements of Realism in Japanese Animation Thesis Presented In
Elements of Realism in Japanese Animation Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By George Andrew Stey Graduate Program in East Asian Studies The Ohio State University 2009 Thesis Committee: Professor Richard Edgar Torrance, Advisor Professor Maureen Hildegarde Donovan Professor Philip C. Brown Copyright by George Andrew Stey 2009 Abstract Certain works of Japanese animation appear to strive to approach reality, showing elements of realism in the visuals as well as the narrative, yet theories of film realism have not often been applied to animation. The goal of this thesis is to systematically isolate the various elements of realism in Japanese animation. This is pursued by focusing on the effect that film produces on the viewer and employing Roland Barthes‟ theory of the reality effect, which gives the viewer the sense of mimicking the surface appearance of the world, and Michel Foucault‟s theory of the truth effect, which is produced when filmic representations agree with the viewer‟s conception of the real world. Three directors‟ works are analyzed using this methodology: Kon Satoshi, Oshii Mamoru, and Miyazaki Hayao. It is argued based on the analysis of these directors‟ works in this study that reality effects arise in the visuals of films, and truth effects emerge from the narratives. Furthermore, the results show detailed settings to be a reality effect common to all the directors, and the portrayal of real-world problems and issues to be a truth effect shared among all. As such, the results suggest that these are common elements of realism found in the art of Japanese animation.

  • Costellazione Manga: Explaining Astronomy Using
Costellazione Manga: Explaining Astronomy Using Japanese Comics and Animation Resources Daria Dall’Olio Piero Ranalli Keywords Onsala Space Observatory, Chalmers Combient AB, Göteborg, Sweden; Public outreach, science communication, University of Technology, Sweden; Lund Observatory, Sweden informal education, planetarium show, ARAR, Planetarium of Ravenna and ASCIG, Italy [email protected] learning development [email protected] Comics and animation are intensely engaging and can be successfully used to communicate science to the public. They appear to stimulate many aspects of the learning process and can help with the development of links between ideas. Given these pedagogical premises, we conducted a project called Costellazione Manga, in which we considered astronomical concepts present in several manga and anime (Japanese comics and animations) and highlighted the physics behind them. These references to astronomy allowed us to introduce interesting topics of modern astrophysics and communicate astronomy-related concepts to a large spectrum of people. In this paper, we describe the methodology and techniques that we developed and discuss the results of our project. Depending on the comic or anime considered, we can introduce general topics such as the difference between stars, planets and galaxies or ideas such as the possibility of finding life on other planets, the latest discoveries of Earth-like planets orbiting other stars or the detection of complex organic molecules in the interstellar space. When presenting the night sky and the shapes of constellations, we can also describe how the same stars are perceived and grouped by different cultures. The project outcomes indicate that Costellazione Manga is a powerful tool to popularise astronomy and stimulate important aspects of learning development, such as curiosity and crit- ical thinking.

Sanders, Dean of Graduate Studies Date Abstract Commodore Matthew Perry was impactful for the United States Navy and the expansion of America's diplomacy around the world. He played a vital role in negotiating the 1854 Treaty of Kanagawa, which established trade between the United States and Japan, and helped reform the United States Navy. The new changes he implemented, like schooling and officer ranks, are still used in modern America. Nevertheless, the memory of Commodore Matthew Perry has faded from the American public over the decades since his death. He is not taught in American schools, hardly written about, and barely remembered by the American people. The goal of this paper is to find out what has caused Matthew Perry to disappear from America's public memory.

Anime, a Universal Language Defying Boundaries: An Applied Study on a Sample of Egyptian Youth Salma Medhat, Cairo University, Egypt The Asian Conference on Media & Mass Communication 2014 Official Conference Proceedings Abstract: The Japanese animation, commonly known as Anime, is becoming one of Japan’s most distinguished cultural features. While it dates back to the late 1910s, its true beginning was in the postwar period. It survived and evolved from targeting a local market to an international market. Still maintaining strong links with its Japanese heritage and identity, some commentators think that anime is stateless, happening in a world of its own, which contributes to its worldwide popularity. Its unique narration and character design styles gave it a competitive advantage over other types of cartoons, making it unpredictable, entertaining, and distinctive. This paper aims to understand why Egyptian viewers were motivated to watch anime despite the boundaries of language, distance and culture. It also tries to find how Anime changed their views about Japan and its culture, encouraging them to participate in activities related to anime like attending drawing workshops, taking Japanese language courses, reading about the history of anime, or planning trips to some Japanese cities. In this paper, two data collection tools will be used: in depth interviews with a sample of elites as well as focus group discussions with a sample of anime viewers in Egypt to understand the anime appeals that drove them to watch it as well as the gratifications met and fulfilled by Anime. Keywords: Anime, Egyptian audience, Uses and Gratifications, International Communication. iafor The International Academic Forum www.iafor.org Introduction The Japanese animation, commonly known as Anime, is one of Japan’s most distinguished cultural features.
