SEARCH ‘KLUGER ’ Photo: Cameron Grimes Representative opportunities arise This weekend we celebrate community football with the annual WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships. A host of players will represent their respective leagues in 15 matches across Victoria on Saturday, with the feature game the battle for the No.1 spot in the league rankings between Geelong FNL and Mornington Peninsula Nepean FNL at the MCG. Looking through the long list of players representing each region, there are many recognisable names to TAC Cup and Peter Jackson VFL fans, with players starting or finishing their careers at local level. While the TAC Cup competition continues to provide over 50 per cent of new talent to the AFL level, we should never forget that each year 80 per cent of players exiting our program return to local leagues across the state (46 per cent) or move on to the VFL (34 per cent). Pleasingly, 37 per cent of players return to their original club, and we hope they have been able to develop their skills not only on the field but off the field and take their learnings back to their local competitions. Good luck to all teams competing this weekend, showcasing the talent at local level. Talking about representative football, the Peter Jackson VFL state squad was announced last week, with over 50 players named as part of the initial squad and a new development list. More players than ever before will be given the opportunity to experience the state-league team training program, which will begin on Wednesday night aft er the squad is reduced to 30 at the completion of Round 5 in the VFL. With only two games of VFL on the weekend of May 27, ensure that you get along and support the VFL team, whichever side you support. Let’s ensure the WAFL experiences the passion Victorian football followers have for the Big V jumper and pack the ground at North Port Oval. It will be a great opportunity to see the VFL return to the winners list and showcase the depth of talent in our competition.
