St.Paul's McKinnon JFC Newsletter

From the Secretary June 28 2018

What a brilliant weekend for footy, with AFL footy visits, photos & celebrations.

Auskick

Our Auskickers were brilliant to kick off the weekend. With more than 120 kids for Grandparents and Special Friends Day, the boys and girls had a ball playing against their special person/s that came to help each of the coaches teach some of the fundamentals for our next generation of Demons. Michelle and the team are fantastic giving guidance on how to play and giving each of the kids a game at the end of the session. It is a sight to see the kids and the parents all get behind the song and give our song the gusto to set the weekend of sport.

Seniors

Saturday morning and the thirds were on fire to kick off our seniors footy with 11.15-81 against Endeavour Hills 6.5-41. The Reserves then backed up the day with a very good game of fast, dramatic footy kicking 20.11-131 to Chelsea Heights 6.5-41. The Reserves lead the Div 1 Reserves Ladder leading into this week’s home game (McKinnon Reserve) on Saturday at Midday against Bentleigh. Our seniors Div 1 team then finished off the Saturday events to see St Pauls kick 17.16-118 to Chelsea 5.6-36. This secured St Paul’s into 3rd position and heading into a clash against Bentleigh on Saturday this week at 2.15pm. Please feel free to come on down to the ground to watch our boys in action. Also please note that Ladies Day is on this weekend for all junior mums, grandmothers, girlfriends and friends to go and watch a fantastic match of footy. Please contact the secretaries for further details.

Juniors

With 5 games played at home last weekend, I had the privilege to see our U11 Yellow team play against one of the top Prahran teams to kick off the festivities at 8.45am on Sunday. With Lincoln and Paddy playing 50 games and celebrating in style, the boys stepped up their game to win a tough game. The U8s then took to Oval 2 and had a good game to follow on with U9 green, whilst the U14 Div 4 played a tough match on Oval 1 to follow on with the U14 Div 2 playing a tight game against St Bede’s/Mentone. Our away teams had a great run with a mixed bag of results, with the girls’ teams stepping up again. The U14 Demonettes played a really tight game only to top Oakleigh in the final minutes by 5 points and our U16 girls teams played a really enjoyable game against East Malvern. A great result for all the boys and girls with footy winning on Sunday. In the last couple of weeks we also saw Thivain Salwathura top his 50 games – great job Thivi!

Lighting Progress

The Glen Eira Council have advised that the poles have been ordered, the soil has been tested for founda- tions to be laid. We are awaiting a progress on the lamps to be delivered before the installation proceeds. Demon Pride

Whilst on holidays, remember to take your training top with you and get a happy snap. The competition has some real traction now that there is a cash prize up for grabs for the kids to win!!!! Just simply take a photo of your child showing off their training top in an unusual place to show how proud they are to wear the Demon. It must be creative. It must be original. It must be fun. Simply send your photo to SPMJFC: demon. [email protected] with your name, your child’s name and phone number. Three lucky winners will win a free registration for 2019 and a winner from each age group will win $50 cash each. Winners will be deter- mined and announced in August. Good Luck.

Demon of the Month

What a great night to top off the Sunday night. Our second Demon of the Month. The kids were super excited to see who would receive the award that pays tribute to behaviour, respect and resilience. Amazing traits to show in this game and our club. The coaches are very fortunate each Demon of the Month to have a great selection of kids that demonstrate different attributes. It is an amazing privilege to have you all in our club and the club commend you. It is great to have you and your families as part of the St Paul’s McKinnon Football Club community. Watch out for the final Demon of the Month. It will be a fantastic night with some surprises in stall!

Life Members

To receive a Life Member award it takes an exceptional amount of service and contribution for one person to receive such an esteemed award. At the Demon of the Month, we were very fortunate to have two people awarded with a Life Membership to the club.

Brendan Kiely was awarded for his 12 years of contribution to the club in varying roles. From being a committee member in 2006 through to 2010, including Junior Vice President, Senior Vice President, News- letter Co-ordinator, Auskick Co-ordinator, his varying roles as Team Manager over the years that his three sons, Campbell, Lachlan and Harrison played at the club and Website Co-ordinator from 2006 to present. Brendan is a well deserved St Pauls McKinnon JFC Life Member.

Simon Forer was also presented with his Life Membership for his dedication, enthusiasm and commitment to the club. From 2011-12, Simon was coach of the U8 & U9 teams, he was treasurer of the club in 2013 and brought about an accounting methodology to provide the foundation for the club to be in a financial position of strength. He played a pivotal role as President in 2014-15 with his amazing work ethic and bringing the Auskick centre from Valkstone to McKinnon, whilst fighting for the electronic scoreboard that we have today. Simon was a committee member in 2016 and remains as Team Manager for our U15 merge team with Highett this year. In-between his roles as boundary umpire, co-ordinator for packing up the ground each Sunday and opening on others, he has played an enormous role in growing the girls football at St Pauls McKinnon JFC to where it is today. I am proud to induct Simon into the Life Members of SPMJFC and look forward to many more years with him as Rachel and Jack continue their football journeys. Congratulations and thank you to both Brendan and Simon for all the years of service you have put into our children at the club. You are both fantastic individuals!

AFL Player Club Visit

We were very fortunate to have the Melbourne Footy club players visit on Monday night. It was great hav- ing seven Melbourne Players help out with our boys and girls. , , Jay Kennedy Harris, Declan Keilty, , & Cameron Pedersen took the boys and girls for a training session on their own over the night and then finished off with some tough questions about favourite colours of clouds, superstitions, injuries, inspirations, motivations, food, skills and training drills. Despite having some injuries from the weekend’s big win, the Melbourne Demons were fantastic with our kids. Good luck for the rest of the season boys. Go Demons!!!

2019 Sponsors

We are currently working toward our 2019 planning year. If you know of anyone who would like to become a sponsor for next year, please feel free to contact me as we already have had some interest from existing sponsors.

Holidays I hope that you all enjoy your well deserved break over the school holidays. If you are going away, please travel safely. If you are not going anywhere and enjoying the Melbourne weather, please feel free to get out with a footy and have a kick. I hope to see you at the seniors match on Saturday and if you need any- thing please feel free to contact me.

Go Demons!

It was back to back premierships for the U15 Boys SMJFL 1 team!

After a ’round’ match loss against YJFL in miserable conditions, this was the Stars’ chance against their strongest rivals, and they were ready to go.

Both teams came out with high energy and skill, with the first 15 minutes of football the best Under 15 football you’d want to watch.

Even though the accuracy in front of goal was slightly off for SMJFL, they led at the first change by 8 points.

YJFL consolidated in the second term, dominating the centre clearances. While the Stars had a few chances to score, the scoreline was 4.4 a piece at the half-time break.

Both teams could taste the premiership in the third term, and the contest was tight. SMJFL curated more successful movement out of the middle, and built a small 4-point lead at the 3/4 break.

An inspiring pep-talk from Head Coach Nick Murray at the break, set the Stars on the path to the premiership. As the players were set to play for the last time in the AFL Victoria Junior Metro Championships, they played how they deserved to finish their time at this level of representative football.

The Stars brought their A-game and outplayed YJFL in the last quarter, despite a gutsy effort from their opponents who didn’t give up until the final siren.

Four individual goal kickers helped the Stars solidify their win – 1 each from L. Brooks, M. Sullivan, and L. Benton; and N. Dear, kicking 3.

With a competitive final margin of 13 points, the Stars were awarded the Under 15 Boys Division 1 Pool A premiership.

Best Players: L. Liakakos, C. McLeod, J. Ellwood, R. Kilburn, L. Brooks Final Score: South Metro Junior Football League 6.9-45 vs Yarra Junior Football League 4.8-32

Stay tuned for the Under 14 Boys premierships, upcoming on Saturday 30 June. You can find them at Eltham Central Park from 12.00pm next Saturday.

SMJFL 2 @ 12.00pm v Yarra JFL SMJFL 1 @ 2.15pm v Northern FNL AUSKICK NEWS Hi Everyone,

Well it was very chilly but thankfully only a sprinkle of rain before the session yesterday. It was wonderful to see so many grandparents and special visitors watching their Auskickers. It was an amazing effort on a cold winter's day and I know our players enjoyed having you all there.

I know there were a few bumps yesterday and in the cold everything hurts a lot more, so for all our brave kids who dusted themselves off and kept playing, great job getting back into the drills and games. Congratulations to all of our award winners too.

A huge thank you to Mitch who cooked and served our BBQ yesterday. We wouldn't have a BBQ without our volunteers each week, so we truly appreciate your work. A big thanks also to our coaches who do a fantastic job each week coaching our kids. Thanks also to the parents and grandparents who were helpers and did a wonderful job supporting the coaches.

As I mentioned on Saturday, we have one more session next Saturday being 30th June before we have 2 weeks off during the school holidays.

Interested in being a volunteer in a great community? As I said on Saturday this will be my last session as Auskick Coordinator and I'm looking for someone or a couple of people to take on this role. You could do it with your husband/partner or even two friends/parents and work as a team. It's a rewarding role and lots of fun, so if you love your footy and being part of a community, please consider the role. I will be here to train you and around for the start of the season next year to help settle you into the role.

Our senior club is having their annual St Paul's Ladies Day with a Wild Wild West theme on Saturday 30th June 1-4 pm. It is always a fun afternoon with lots of laughs. Details:

Tickets are $50 and $55 at the door Includes 2 course lunch, drinks, entertainment, raffles, prizes, games and more RSVP to [email protected] For pre-purchased tickets, account details BSB: 633-000 and Acc: 1455-44029. Description LD and (name)

U8 MIXED MAROON St. Paul’s McKinnon vs Mordialloc Goal Kickers: Best Players: A great team effort!

Report not available sorry

U9 MIXED GREEN St. Paul’s McKinnon vs Beaumaris Sharks Best Players: : L Bowman, L Fletcher, M Comito, B Fischer, T Bitting, A Hyland, A Hill, L Hyland, E MacLennan. Goal Kickers: H Bennett 1, B Fischer 1, L Bowman 1 Our first home game in a month, in great conditions – the mighty under 9 greens were once again up against a determined and well drilled Beaumaris. Having played Beaumaris recently, we had a fair idea what to expect so the pre-game message to our players today was making sure they at- tacked the ball and kept up their tackling pressure. First quarter Beaumaris got the jump on us get- ting some fast clearances from the middle, but later in the quarter, through some great teamwork we were able to get the ball down to our forwards which resulted in Luke being able to score a goal. Second quarter was quite similar to the first with Beaui once again making a quick start, but again through some great team efforts especially from Luke, Lewis and Archie – the demons were once again starting to get on top. Half time and with the game evenly poised, the message to the players to start the third quarter was we needed to be on the bottom of the packs to provide first use of the ball to our teammates and not be afraid to have a run and bounce if we had the chance. A great quarter from our Co-captains today in Ewan and Tim together with strong marking and tackling from Max, strong work around the ball from Braden gave the demons great momentum to start the last quarter. Final quarter with the game still very much even, Beaumaris were winning the ball out of the middle but great defensive work from our defenders ensured the sharks were not going to be able to score very easy. Goals to both teams in the last quarter resulted in a very tight finish to a fantastic game with the two teams very much evenly matched.A big thankyou to the players who are rotating to the purple team – we hope you have had fun and the coaches very much appreciate the contribution of the parents who help out with the duties each week. Enjoy the school holidays and look forward to our next game against Ormond. David

U9 MIXED PURPLE St. Paul’s McKinnon vs East Sandringham JFC Goal Kickers: T Savva 1 Best Players: N Collard, J Bale, A Teo, C Savva, T Savva, C Willers, J Pope, J Nazaretian, T Bibby, H Adler, E Spiteri, H Wilson, J Morgan,

Round 10 v East Sandringham - a team we’ve never played before. No Intel this week about our opposition, other than to say the U11 and 12 outfits are quite strong, and to expect no different. 3 weeks in a row now, we have faced strong opposition, and I would have to say East Sandringham have given us the biggest challenge in our short football journey to date. Q1 East Sandy opened up with a few quick goals with passing precision never seen before at this level by our team. Aidan and Jacob had 3 or 4 strong defensive efforts, while the rest of our mids (Hayden, Daniel, Jackson, Joseph) and backs (Henry, Jonathan and Josh) had to work hard. There was very little space to go on our dashing runs as East Sandy had about 10 speed machines that closed us up. BUT…. with a Fear Factor of NIL - that was not going to stop Darcy, Thomas S, Christian and Daniel from taking them on anyway - such is the confidence and daring of this group. One of the quarter highlights for the team was watching Josh Pope (without instruction) assume the role of goal stop- per, and then going on to block a certain East Sandy goal. Charlie Willers, on his first game back after injury, was his usual bouncy self, roaming around with lots of energy and excitement that got the group going. Q2 – With scoring shots even, the defensive efforts of our leader Noah, along with the support of Jake, Christopher, Peter, Evan and Teddy were on show. Highlights were Jonathan’s toughness at the footy, some good marks by Henry & Noah , along with some good clearing kicks by Noah and Jacob, while Hayden used his smarts to create opportuni- ties in our forward line. Josh Pope had a great clearance kick from the centre, while Peter Wu blocked and didn’t allow the opposition easy passage to goal. Q3 Was even with a goal apiece and as we started to match them. Noah’s kick out of defence was the highlight with a kick of 40 metres that carried another 20 or so metres reaching close to the centre of the ground. Thomas S goaled, while our boys continued to work hard. Q4 Joseph’s uncanny skills, along with the efforts of Jackson, Evan and Charlie saw us limit East Sandy to 1 goal. Boys, overall, today I thought you were terrific. We were challenged in the 1st quarter by East Sandy. But then - we showed them how it’s done in last 3 quarters!!! I also think today we played the strongest opposition all year and the toughest game in 2 years – and I was proud that we matched them in large patches of the last 3 quarters! You boys have an amazing strength – today you showed it - and that is never to give up. Well Done!!!! Remember - the games we have played to date are NOT about results. This is all about developing our football skills, building our friendships, and enjoying ourselves along the way. Tom

U10 MIXED MAROON St. Paul’s McKinnon vs Waverley Hawks Goal Kickers: Best Players:

Cold clear early Sunday mornings are the best for our U8s. Playing at home, the boys and girls had a brilliant day on the track. With some really good plays from Aidan, Tom, Cully, Callum, Amelia, Kynan, Heath LK, Lily, Leith & Heath L the ball moved very freely over the ground for the boys and girls to kick 5 goals and 6 behinds for the match. All players are playing well as a team and understanding how to pass the ball throughout the ground as well as defending well. A great job today playing Mordi Brae to finish off singing the song with gusto for Paul Commerford as coach. Goals Kynan (2), Tom, Heath LK, Callum. Coach Paul.

U11 MIXED YELLOW - TEAM ARIDZONE St. Paul’s McKinnon 8.8.56 vs Prahran 2.5.17 Goal Kickers: Sideridis 3, Heelis 3, Nowell, Derbyshire Best Players: Sideridis, Heelis, Smith, Fato, Sullivan, Lasnitzki, Ryan, Barnacle, Behnk, Leech

Needing a win to keep our finals hopes alive, we hosted a strong Prahran at home. Prahran needed a win to close in on the top spot on the ladder. The boys were instructed to move the ball wide and to hand- ball quickly, in order to negate the impact of the taller opposition. And did the boys do well. Our run and spread was exceptional with the boys dominating all day. This was indeed our best performance for the year! Each and every boy did their job in a great team effort. It was great to see Ryder and Drew score goals, with Peter Kats also dangerous around goals. If we can continue this form, we will certainly be in the hunt for a finals birth.Sean

U11 MIXED PURPLE St. Paul’s McKinnon vs St Peters Goal Kickers: B. Fluxman Best Players: The under 11 purple boys were revved up and ready for a battle - and battle they did till the final siren. Every contest was exciting to watch to see who would win the ball. More often than not we came out with the pill. Great work out of the middle from Ryan, Cody, Dylan and Dan P. With Blake down back winning almost each opportunity, the midfield gave run from half back towards Julian who at one point decided to take on two opponents with one hand while clutching the ball with the other - a sight which made the coach scream with applause and encouragement. Up front we missed a few chances until the goal sneak Ben put the ball through the big ones and show all that we can score from hard work. Our boys had the ball at least 70 per cent of the time. The score will soon come with everyone working hard. The lads are about to burst...... keep working boys. We just fell short of the win by the time the siren blew. The great game was followed by a great night to award Demon of the Month. The boy who was given this membership to the Demon award is always at training working hard, always listening to instructions, always saying thank you to the coach and by far one of the most well mannered young men I have had the pleasure of meeting. His future will always be bright because he has his head in the right place and has amazing positive support from his wonderful parents who are also a pleasure to be engaged with. Samual Markham is the Demon of the Month. Many lessons to be learnt from Sam’s demeanour, positive attitude and want to listen and be better. Thank you Samual for being part of the team. Dave

U12 MIXED RED St. Paul’s McKinnon vs East Sandringham Goal Kickers: F. Pacak Best Players:

U14 GIRLS DIV 4 St. Paul’s McKinnon Demonettes vs Oakleigh Goal Kickers: Ella Best Players: Ella, Erin, Tess, Mim, Mia, Rina, Sienna, Jess P, Rosie Five in a row! It was an absolute slug fest on Sunday. We had some key outs and late withdrawals due to illness and so we started with only 16. Erin started on fire, dominating the clearances with help all day from Tess and Ella (BOG). The forward pressure was impressive with Jamison taking some telling marks and Rosie, Bacci and Sofia gang tackling (all day) to keep the ball locked in the forward line for most of the quar- ter. When it came out Sienna mopped up and pumped it straight back in. Unrewarded for effort though it was nil all at quarter time. The second quarter was the backs turn to soak up the pressure. Mia, Jess P and Rina repelled everything with help from the two Lucys who both played their best games for the year. 2-1 at half time. Third quarter was much like the first - Bridget, without a couple of unlucky bounces, would have put through a couple of goals, but it wasn’t to be. 2-2 three quarter time. The last quarter was thrilling, Mim was roving her own taps and Lea was under every pack. Oakleigh hit the lead (3-2) and despite the ball being in our forward line for most of the quarter, the match looked over until 90 seconds to go when Ella broke free from a pack and slotted through the winning (and only) goal! It was a complete game with every single girl making a contribution and keeping us on top of the ladder going into the holidays. John

U14 MIXED DIV 2 St. Paul’s McKinnon 3-2-20 vs St Bedes / Mentone 2-11-23 Goal Kickers: Rousakis 2, Tran 1 Best : Aiden Chilcott, Ethan Tran, Julian Manev, Jack Behnk Again the U14 Div 2 boys made a slow start with St Bedes kicking what turned out to be ½ their game’s score in the 1st quarter before we had troubled the scorer. The second and third quarters were all about defence with both teams being tough and hard. Jack Behnk was strong on the ball all day, as were the two big men in Julian and Ethan. Aiden took multiple strong marks at critical times of the game. At ¾ time we were still in it, but two (and a bit) goals down and the coach gave the boys an old fashion spray, and it worked. We played great football in the last quarter, but just could not get there. This team needs to find a way to play the first quarter the way they play the last quarter and they will win games. Pat

U14 MIXED DIV 4 St. Paul’s McKinnon 3.2.20 vs Chogs 16.11.107 Goal Kickers: Gabe 2, Luke Best Players: Luke, Thivi, Jos, Declan, David Q1 – Over the past few weeks we haven’t been at our best. We came to McKinnon reserve ready and firing we had a very good first quarter with Declan controlling the backline and with David taking a lot of well-timed and handy marks in the backline. As a team we tackled very well. We were also excellent in our second efforts. Q2 – We had a good second quarter but they held us scoreless but there were a few positives with the midfielders such as Luke, Thivi, Jos and Rory who were winning the midfield battle and also with David saving a certain goal by tackling a much taller bloke and getting rewarded with a free kick. But they still scored a lot. However the scoreboard didn’t reflect on how we played that half. (Special mention to Jos who rucked all day.) Q3 –We came in a half time disappointed but Steve was proud of our efforts all because we were facing a big and strong panther’s outfit and that we had to keep trying to get rewarded. We did by getting a goal this quarter with Gabe and we had to believe that we could score a few more. Also the backline was brilliant keeping them to just 2 goals. Q4 – The fourth quarter was ok because we kicked two goals and we were only outscored by 2 goals with Gabe and Luke scoring and that was a positive. We were proud of our effort considering we were playing a side that had massive players. C’mon boys. Let’s get the win over Oakleigh in the next two weeks. David

U15 MIXED DIV 2 St. Paul’s McKinnon vs Bentleigh 7-7-50 vs St Kilda City 7-9-51 Goal Kickers: Patrick D’Amico, Jules Goldenberg, Jairo Hechavarri Coste, Matthew O’Brien, Matthew O’Beirne, Riley Weir, Joe Walsh Best: Ty Hewett, Matthew O’Beirne, Daniel Zhang, Finn Sullivan, Aussie Kelly, Thomas Hughes Today was one of our best efforts since being regraded up a division, losing to 2nd placed St Kilda City by 1 point. The instruction today was to , and the boys did not let us down…tacking ferociously from the first bounce. Scores were level at quarter time and only 1 point separated teams at half time…..it ended up being a nail biter! Ty Hewett’s ruckwork and overhead marking was the standout, but the consistency and effort from all the boys was notable. Patrick D’Amico kicked a blinder from the pocket, Jules Goldenberg kicked a massive torp on the run and Matthew O’Brien was silky smooth quarter after quarter. Congratula- tions to Matthew O’Beirne on his 100th game and to Jules Goldenberg on winning our Demon of the Month for June! Simon

U16 GIRLS DIV 3 St. Paul’s McKinnon Demonettes vs East Malvern Goal Kickers: Sarah Quist, Lou Lloyd, Jordyn Freeman Best Players: Beyonce Wigg, Carla Arrighi, Ellie Williamson, Sarah Quist, Kylie Wei, Chops Byrne, Bridget Ellis, Mackenzie Byrne, Lou Lloyd, Issy Howard, Ebony Side. Another great performance by the girls today. After coming back from a wet week, the girls were ready to run the ball down the field. Whilst East Malvern were short with only 13 players, our girls rotated through East Malvern to ensure that all girls had 4 full quarters of footy. Starting off in the first quarter, the girls moved fast out of the square to capitalise on the early wind. With our captain for the day, Sarah Quist, kicking the first goal for the game, our back line held strong to ensure that East Malvern maintained a single 1 behind for the quarter. The 2nd quarter saw the come back with Bridget dominating the play for East Malvern. With Lily kick a behind and with some assistance by the wind East Malvern levelled the scores at half time. Coming back from the break, the girls wanted to make sure that they maximised the wind. With some big marks from Lethal Lou Lloyd she kicked a bomb into the goals and saw the money fall from the skies from Steve’s wallet. Another close goal from Jordy Freeman in the third put the girls in front. Ellie, Bridget and Jemima all maximised the backline to shut down the play. Ella, Paige and Sophie were exceptional in ensuring that East Malvern were held to 3 points for the quarter. The 4th and the girls had Lily, Georgia, Bridget, Sophie B and Kenz all go over to East Malvern. Kylie and Sarah were great in the centre with Beyonce. With some open spaces created by Tayla, Zoe, Chops and Carla, the girls dominated the last quarter with Jordyn Freeman kicking the last goal of the match. A great effort today girls. Great job. Paul
