Music from Peter Gunn
“The Music from ‘Peter Gunn’”--Henry Mancini (1958) Added to the National Registry: 2010 Essay by Mark A. Robinson (guest post)* Henry Mancini Henry Mancini (1924-1994) was the celebrated composer of a parade of song standards, particularly remembered for his work in television and film composition. Among his sparkling array of memorable melodies are the music for “The Pink Panther” films, the “Love Theme from ‘Romeo and Juliet’,” and his two Academy Award-winning collaborations with lyricist Johnny Mercer, “Moon River” for the 1961 film “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” and the title song for the 1962 feature “Days of Wine and Roses.” Born Enrico Nicola Mancini in the Little Italy neighborhood of Cleveland, Ohio, Henry Mancini was raised in West Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh. Though his father wished his son to become a teacher, Mancini was inspired by the music of Hollywood, particularly that of the 1935 Cecil B. DeMille film “The Crusades.” This fascination saw him embark on a lifelong journey into composition. His first instrument of choice was the piccolo, but soon he drifted toward the piano, studying under Pittsburgh concert pianist and Stanley Theatre conductor Max Adkins. Upon graduating high school, Mancini matriculated at the Carnegie Institute of Technology, but quickly transferred to the Julliard School of Music, concentrating his studies in piano, orchestration, and composition. When America entered World War II, Mancini enlisted in the United States Army in 1943. Assigned to the 28th Air Force Band, he made many connections in the music industry that would serve him well in the post-war years. -

Film I-Spring 2020 Plague Work Unit: New Hollywood Just like we did with the French New Wave, we’re going to try to take a look at one more film movement this year: the New Hollywood movement. 1. What is New Hollywood? Watching a New Hollywood film Watch the film The Graduate from 1967 directed by Mike Nichols. Writing comparatively You have two options! Do either one of the following two: Option 1: Choose any other American film made since 1967 that you can use to do a comparative study with The Graduate. This might be a film that shares themes with The Graduate or shows similar stylistic choices or one that you can analyze through a similar lens. Use that main area that they share to analyze the two films in comparison with each other. The final product should be two pages typed and should be uploaded to TurnItIn by Friday, May 15th. or Option 2: Watch Bonnie and Clyde from 1967 directed by Arthur Penn. The Graduate and Bonnie and Clyde were made at roughly the same time. Analyze them both in comparison with each other, both in terms of style and filmmaking choices and in terms of historical/sociocultural context and how they reflect the United States in the late 1960s. -

BICYCLE THIEVES Vittorio De Sica Sub : Film Studies (FE 3) By : Farah Faisal 2018-2021 Vittorio De Sica • Italian director and actor, a leading figure in the neorealistmovement. • Four of the films he directed won Academy Awards: Sciuscià and Bicycle Thieves(honorary), while Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow and Il giardino dei Finzi Contini won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. • Bicycle Thieves helped establish the permanent Best Foreign Film Award. These two films are considered part of the canon of classic cinema.Bicycle Thieves was cited by Turner Classic Movies as one of the 15 most influential films in cinema history.[ Analysis • The setting of this movie takes place in post-war Rome, where economic struggles are commonplace. • The film clearly contains many elements of the Classical Hollywood Narrative (the ending being an important exception), and it makes excellent use of film form, mise-en-scene, and cinematography to tell the story in a compelling way. • The film follows Antonio Ricci, the main character, during his search for his stolen bicycle. • The film focuses on the main character, Antonio Ricci, and his son, Bruno, throughout. Antonio’s main goal is to get a job, but it quickly changes into the main plot of the movie: to locate his stolen bicycle so that he can return to work. • The film progresses in a logical, linear fashion, having no major lapses in time. In addition, viewers are taken on an emotional journey, feeling the frustration and desperation of Antonio as his search continues. • While the film meets many of the characteristics of the Classical Hollywood Narrative, there was one important difference: There was no happy ending in this film. -

Some 2,000 research fellows, grad uate students, and professionals in business and government each year work with the Center's international staff in cooperative study, training, and research. They examine major issues related to population, resources and development, the environment, culture, and communication in Asia, the Pacific, and the United States. The Center was established in 1960 by the United States Congress, which provides principal funding. Support also comes from more than twenty Asian and Pacific governments, as well as private agencies and corporations. Kurosawa's Ran: Reception and Interpretation ANN THOMPSON AKIRA KUROSAWA'S Ran (literally, war, riot, or chaos) was chosen as the first film to be shown at the First Tokyo International Film Festival in June 1985, and it opened commercially in Japan to record-breaking busi ness the next day. The director did not attend the festivities associated with the premiere, however, and the reception given to the film by Japa nese critics and reporters, though positive, was described by a French critic who had been deeply involved in the project as having "something of the air of an official embalming" (Raison 1985, 9). -

B L O O M CC II TT II ZZ EE NN KK AA NN EE Directed by Orson Welles Produced by Orson Welles Distributed by RKO Radio Pictures Released in 1941 n any year, the film that wins the Academy Award for Best Picture reflects the Academy ' s I preferences for that year. Even if its members look back and suffer anxious regret at their choice of How Green Was My Valley , that doesn ' t mean they were wrong. They can ' t be wrong . It ' s not everyone else ' s opinion that matters, but the Academy ' s. Mulling over the movies of 1941, the Acade my rejected Citizen Kane . Perhaps they resented Orson Welles ' s arrogant ways and unprecedented creative power. Maybe they thought the film too experimental. Maybe the vote was split between Citizen Kane and The Maltese Falcon , both pioneering in their F ilm Noir flavor. Or they may not have seen the film at all since it was granted such limited release as a result of newspaper baron William Randolph Hearst ' s threats to RKO. Nobody knows, and it doesn ' t matter. Academy members can ' t be forced to vote for the film they like best. Their biases and political calculations can ' t be dissected. To subject the Academy to such scrutiny would be impossible and unfair. It ' s the Academy ' s awards, not ours. -

ISSUE #1 | JULY 2020 The Odyssey of Fellini Kayla Knuth Making raw cinematic artistry work on the big screen can be extremely challenging, and directors such as Federico Fellini meet that challenge by giving us unique films, each with a clear vision. There are many masterful auteurs within the film industry, but there is something about Fellini’s good-natured style that truly engages me, along with how he incorporates elements of both reality and fantasy in iconic films such as La Strada (1953), La Dolce Vita (1961), and 8 ½ (1963). Not everyone is capable of digging deeper into what the artist is actually saying, and many are too quick to make harsh judgements about what they see rather than what they interpret. This is another reason why his film work interests me. I enjoy the “chase” that helps me provide a deeper analysis of what certain scenes in his films actually symbolize. This makes me pay closer attention to the films, and I find myself rewinding scenes, taking a step back to investigate the meaning of what I’m seeing. Almost all of Fellini’s films feature a dominant protagonist character with qualities to which the audience can at least secretly relate. Some of Fellini’s most striking cinematic moments are memorable because of characters that tend to stick with you even when the films become unclear at times. In addition, the artistry, passion, zest for life, and inven- tiveness on display in his filmmaking help us appreciate a wide range of possibilities for cinematic representation. Aesthetically, Fellini’s films reach for what I will call “ugliness within beauty.” His films seem to ask: is there beauty to be found within ugliness? Or is there ugliness lurking within the beautiful? Fellini attempts to ask these questions through both his striking visuals and sympathetic characters. -
