York St., 2nd Floor, Elmhurst, IL 60126 historictheatres.org Finding Aid for the THEATRE HISTORICAL SOCIETY THEATRE FILE COLLECTION Acc No.: Future Additions Expected: Yes Finding Aid creation: July 31, 2014 Size: Approximately 148 linear feet Abstract The Theatre Historical Society Theatre File Collection consists of approximately 148 linear feet of files on nearly 10,000 theatres. The Theatre File collection has international holdings but the primary focus is on United States theatres. Background Information The Theatre Historical Society of America was founded in 1969 to promote the legacy of America’s historic theatres and insure the documentation of the architectural, cultural and social history of those theatres. Materials were collected by members and kept in separate locations. Over time the collections were brought to one location and combined. From these initial collections the materials were organized and separated into several different collections. Records detailing histories of specific theatres were labeled the Theatre File, materials containing information on theatre mechanics, cinema chains, architects, THS members, vaudeville circuits, among other topics became the Subject Files, Photos that were used in the publication of Marquee were gathered into the Editors Collection, photographic slides, postcards, and negatives became the THS Slide Collection, THS Postcard Collection, and THS Negative Collection respectively. These collections came from THS members and donations made throughout the organization’s history. Scope and Contents Note The Theatre File collection consists of 148 linear feet of folders stored in 28 vertical filing cabinets. The files are organizes geographically by country, state, city and then alphabetically by theatre. The file headings use US postal code abbreviations and include the city and theatre name in the file name, for example IL-Chicago- Tivoli. Below represents a list of file folder headings. The file folders may contain correspondence, photos, news clippings, promotional material, magazines and other publications, audio visual material, data discs, ephemera, postcards, programs, historical information, etc. Though theatres may have more than one file of material each heading is only listed once. Records in the Theatre Files date back to the late 1800s and span to present day. Coverage is primarily of the United States. There is also material on international theatres. A great research university should nurture the unique and powerful role of the arts in the education of the whole person. University President Ernest DeWitt Burton recognized this when he wrote in 1925: “We need to supplement science and the scientific study of all branches of knowledge with the finer arts of music and painting, of sculpture and architecture. We owe it to our students, to whom it is our ambition to give the best possible education. We owe it to our professors, that they not become dry-as- dust investigators and lecturers but symmetrically developed and cultivated personalities.   • The Music of John Williams
    Dear Friends of Our New Philharmonic, On behalf of my colleagues in the orchestra, we are hoping that you are all safe, healthy, and we certainly miss seeing you! Recent months have set out challenges that I had never before seen in my lifetime. This period, however, reminds me greatly not only of what I learned from my parents’ lives, but also of my grandparents/great grandparents’ lives and the obstacles that they overcame in their overwhelmingly hard times. These people somehow though came through it all - with courage, grit, kindness, good spirits, good hearts. I have a sign on my fridge that says: “Wallace Hartley.” It is to remind me that this violinist on the Titanic was sharing music with his fellow passengers even in The most extraordinary moment for any musician in history. The calling that each of our musicians has felt in their lives is just that - music. We may not be good at flying airplanes, fixing teeth, or playing for the Hawks, but what we look to give the world is music. This coming year we have monster-great season, opening with the astonishing music of John Williams - a concert that celebrates Mr. Williams’ 66th year of composing music for film. And, for the first time we can offer you a Holiday Pops concert that is full of praise, fun and joy. New Year’s Eve and the opera/ Broadway concerts are both BLASTS with some of your favorite singers! In April, I have programmed something that I believe has never been done anywhere in the world before.
