Many of the uniqueness of Madura language that is not used in the speech, replaced with the Indonesian language. Recently, in Madura language communication, it is found the use of lexical elements that are not in accordance with the phonological rules of Madura Language. Consequently, in the future, Madura language will increasingly lose its uniqueness as a language, instead it will appear more as a dialect of the Indonesian language. Nowadays, the insecurity of Madura language has begun to appear with the shrinking use of this language in communication. Therefore, if there is no a very serious and planned effort, Madura language will be extinct soon; No longer claimed as language, but will only become one of the dialects of the Indonesian language. It has become the identity and characteristic of Indonesia that needs to be preserved and developed. Indonesian people can preserve it by recognizing its products’ existence and conducting development efforts by improving the quality of its products. In Indonesia, batik has been passed down from generations by wearing, producing and marketing its products. The article is the result of a study using a socio-legal method. The data collection was conducted through interview and observation techniques. The research subjects are batik business owners in Indonesia. This paper reveals the challenges and obstacles faced by the local batik product business people in Indonesia in the face of economic globalization. There have been legal efforts to provide protection for the Indonesian batik products. The problems are how the protection is applied and how the country and the community perform the protection. The other objective of this paper is to analyze the readiness of the local batik businesspeople in Indonesia in the face of economic globalization especially from the legal perspective. The article exposes the batik business owners’ weaknesses and seeks to give sound solutions which is hoped to be applied by the batik business owners in Indonesia in order to survive in the globalization era. -

Evidence from Indonesia Abstract This paper adopts an instrumental variable approach to uncover the impact of variations in minimum temperature on emergence and severity of actual violence through the effect on food availability, captured by rice crops per capita. The link between increase in minimum temperature and rice crops is suggested by natural science literature. We use Indonesia as a case study over the period 1990-2003. Results show that an increase of the minimum temperature during the core month of the ‘wet planting season’, i.e. December, determines an increase in violence fuelled by the reduction in future rice production per capita. Wayang is one of the cultural heritages of Java which is very deep understanding of the culture and character of the people of Indonesia. The meaning of symbols of wayang is the focus of this paper. The symbols are represented by character of Semar, Bagong, Petruk and Gareng. What is the role wayang in daily life, especially for Indonesian people, is becoming the main discussion as well. There are a lot of wayang performances that have a deep meaning of the life itself. Although there are some scholars who say that wayang is originally from India but it is not proved and, in the end, people accepted that wayang came from Java. Opinion about wayang originated from India was because the story in the puppet was adapted from the Mahabharata story originating from India. Using the concept of thick description by Clifford Geertz, the author tries to explain about the history and character of the puppet figures according to Javanese philosophy. Prominent figures such as Semar, Gareng, Petruk and Bagong were the reflection of the ideal human being depicted with an imperfect physical form. -

The perceived destination image of Indonesia: an assessment on travel blogs written by the industry’s top markets By Bernadeth Petriana A thesis submitted to the Victoria University of Wellington in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Tourism Management Victoria University of Wellington 2017 1 Abstract The tourist gaze theory suggests that tourists are taught by the destination marketing organisation to know how, when, and where to look. However, the birth of travel blogs has challenged this image as they offer the public “unfiltered” information. Travel bloggers have become more powerful in influencing the decision making of potential tourists. This study employs textual and photographic content analysis to investigate the destination image of Indonesia held by the industry’s key markets; Singapore and Australia. 106 blog entries and over 1,500 pictures were content analysed, and the results suggest that overall tourists tended to have positive images of Indonesia. International tourists are still very much concentrated in the traditionally popular places such as Bali and Jakarta. Negative images of Indonesia include inadequate infrastructure, ineffective wildlife protection, and westernisation of Bali. Natural and cultural resources are proven in this thesis to be Indonesia’s top tourism products. Influenced by their cultural backgrounds, Singaporean and Australian bloggers have demonstrated a dissimilar tourist gaze. The current study also analysed the bloggers’ image of Indonesia as opposed to the image projected by the government through the national tourism brand “Wonderful Indonesia”. The results indicate a narrow gap between the two images. Implications for Indonesian tourism practitioners include stronger law enforcement to preserve local culture and natural attractions, and recognising the market’s preference to promote other destinations. -

THE BIRDS OF BAWEAN ISLAND, JAVA SEA. By Harry C. Oberholser, Of the Biological Survey, United States Department of Agriculture. Bawean Island lies in the Java Sea, about 175 miles south of Borneo, and about 75 miles north of eastern Java. It is nearly square, some 11 miles long by 10 miles wide, and has an area of approximately 100 square miles. The surface is mountainous, and the highest point reaches an altitude of about 2,200 feet above sea level. The island is of volcanic origm and has still many volcanic cones and some hot springs. Its rocks are chiefly lava, basalt, and limestone; and exten- sive coral reefs fringe its coastal base. A lake of some 15 acres occu- pies the crater of Mount Telaga, an extinct volcano. The island supports a hmnan population of about 50,000, mostly near the coast, and these inhabitants speak a peculiar language. Little of the vu'gin forest remains: the largest tract is on the northern slope of the mountains in the center of the island; another area lies on the western coast ; and the rest comprises only a few small patches on the eastern and southern slopes of the mountains. Low brush and tall bamboos cover most of the remaining portions of the island. There are numerous cattle on Bawean, and their trails run everywhere through the scrub. Wild mammals, except for two or three species, chiefly pigs and flying foxes, are not numerous. Dr. W. L. Abbott visited Bawean Island from November 19 to 28, 1907, and made a collection of 35 spechuens of birds, which he pre- sented to the United States National Museum. -

ON THE ZOOGEOGRAPHY OF JAVA. By Dr. K. W. DAMMERMAN (Buitenzorg Museum) In a paper read before the Third Netherlands-lndian Science Congress, held at Buitenzorg in 1924, the author expounded his views on the zoogeo- graphical relations of the Java fauna to those of the surrounding countries. These views were based upon lists of all vertebratesand the molluscs of Java, with their distribution, which lists, however, were not published with the paper that appeared in the Proceedings of the said congress(lQ2s). In the meantime I found a niimber of specialists willing to revise the various lists or to draw up entirely new ones, so I thought it desirable to publish these lists (see hereafter), which, I presunie, will prove to be a great help to future workers. Although the data now at our disposal are far more complete and exact, the results arrived at in the following pages are not materially differing from those already put down in my previous paper, written in dutch. The list of the mammals has been composed by the autlior himself Mr. BARTELS Jr., a student at the Bern university, made an entirely new list of the birds, based mainly upon the fine and almoït complete collection of Java birds made by his father, Mr. M. BARTELS Sr. He could secure the valuable aid of Mr. STRESEMANN of the Berlin Museum and the result of their coöperation is published separately in the next paper of this volume. The distribution of the Java birds, as entered in the list appended to the present paper, has been compiled by the author with the assistance of Mr. -

Here he accompanies a cangik, a maidservant to a princess, or demo ness, who fights on the side of evil. INDONESIA'S SOCIAL AND GEOGRAPHICAL environment is one of the most complex and varied in the world. Byone count, at least 669 distinct languages and well over 1,100 different dialects are spoken in the archipelago. The nation encompasses some 13,667 islands; the landscape ranges from rain forests and steamingman- grove swamps to arid plains and snowcapped mountains. Major world religions—Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, and Hinduism— are represented. Political systems vary from the ornate sultans' courts of Central Java to the egalitarian communities of hunter- gatherers of Sumatran jungles. A wide variety of economic patterns also can be found within Indonesia's borders, from rudimentary slash-and-burn agriculture to highly sophisticated computer micro- chip assembly plants. Some Indonesian communities relyon tra- ditional feasting systems and marriage exchange for economic distribution, while others act as sophisticated brokers in interna- tional trading networks operating throughout the South China Sea. Indonesians also have a wide variety of living arrangements. Some go home at night to extended families living in isolated bamboo longhouses, others return to hamlets of tiny houses clustered around a mosque, whereas still others go home to nuclear families in ur- ban high-rise apartment complexes. There are, however, striking similarities among the nation's diverse groups. Besides citizenship in a common nation-state, the single most unifying cultural characteristic is a shared linguistic heritage. -

He oversaw cultural missions abroad and produced ‘cultural events’ that showed off his grace and charisma on the dance floor to overseas guests. While Soe- harto showed little interest in the arts, new modes of arts diplomacy flourished dur- ing the New Order—scholarships for foreigners to study arts, artists in residence at Indonesian embassies, large-scale festivals aiming to facilitate artistic exchange and encourage foreign investments, to name but a few. In Indonesia today, arts dip- lomacy is represented by its own sub-directorate in the Ministry of Education and Culture. Indonesia is promoting itself through collaborations between Indonesian gov- ernmental agencies and professional, international producing bodies, galleries, and festivals. Cultural Houses are being built in key cities abroad, along with a nation- wide platform for international festivals, Indonesiana. ‘Indonesianists’, including for- eign academics and students of the arts, are being recruited to promote Indonesia abroad. The ethnographic method through the “thick description” technique in this study enables the researchers to formulate the substance of a group of people’s consciousness who identify themselves as being Bawean. As a result, the tradition of wandering and Islamic beliefs has become a cohesive basis between Creole culture tribes. In conclusion, the tribes in Bawean who proud themselves as Bawean community, they are subversive to the idea of regional and language-based nationalism. Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI), 35900 Tanjong Malim Perak Darul Ridzuan, MALAYSIA Abstract Cultural communication has obliquely shapes society relationships with another for the sake of togetherness prosperity. Diversity of norms and values from cultural symbols are able to be transferred as connecting elements in order to create interaction that is based on mutual comprehension of cultural norms. This study objective is to comprehend Bawean ethnic's cultural communication symbol. Employing qualitative methods, social construction paradigm is perceived through in-depth interview. This methodology adapted to realize the meaning of cultural communication between Bawaean and the other Malay sub-ethnicity. There are one main informant and ten other informant whom have been interviewed face-to-face. The result has shown that Bawean ethnic's cultural communication symbol such as language, cuisine, martial arts and religious rituals are the main elements in Bawean ethnic's cultural communication. In conclusion, cultural communication between Bawean ethnic and other ethnic has taken place according to the situations as either inside or outside the group. Cultural similarities has facilitate cultural communication tranquility. It creates social integration with relation to the ethnic relationship processes such as acculturation, accommodation and integration.
