Nourished by the Sacraments, Scripture, and a diversity of individual gifts, we understand that our mission comes from Jesus Christ who calls us to teach, to preach, to serve those in need, and to be a presence of Christ in the world.

It was a privilege for me to accompany Bishop Clark last Mass Schedule week on his 7th visit to “Ad limina Apostolorum.” Since 1585 every residential bishop has been required by church law to travel to Monday, December 2 Rome, “to the threshold of the Apostles,” to venerate the tomb of St. Is 4:2-6 Ps 122:1-9 Mt 8:5-11 Peter on the Vatican hill and that of St. Paul outside the city walls OLQP 7:00 AM †Jim McCauley - Linda McCauley and to give an account to the of the state of his diocese. Since STM 8:00 AM †Terry Dryer 1911, this visit has been required to take place every five years but, Tuesday, December 3 St. Francis Xavier, priest because of the age and disability of the last two , it has slipped Is 11:1-10 Ps 72:1-2,7-8,12-13,17 Lk 10:21-24 to eight years. These days this required visit is preceded by an OLQP 7:00 AM †Barbara Gager - Marcia Seeger extensive written report submitted to the Vatican Secretary of State STM 8:00 AM †Joseph Kelleher six months prior to the visit. 10:30AM Highlands at Brighton Mass Currently, because of the large number of dioceses and Wednesday, December 4 St. John Damascene, priest, doctor of vicariates in the world (3,160), the bishops have to come to Rome in the church regional groupings. In the United States alone there are 197 dioceses Is 25:6-10a Ps 23:1-6 Mt 15:29-37 and archdioceses which in turn are now divided into 12 regions. OLQP 7:00 AM †Deceased members of King family - Some of these regions will be grouped together for their visit to the Mary Ann Obark Pope but our region, comprising the eight diocese of New York STM 8:00 AM †Florence Kelleher State, travelled to Rome alone. After all, the New York enjoys the Thursday, December 5 ministry of 27 bishops. Is 26:1-6 Ps 118:1,8-9,19-21,25-27a Mt 7:21,24-27 In the past, the bishops who were in charge of a diocese met OLQP 7:00 AM †David Miller - Ellie Booth with the Pope individually for about a half-hour during which he STM 8:00 AM †Terry Dryer brought up matters for discussion and the bishop was given a chance Friday, December 6 St. Nicholas, bishop to question the Pope on matters which were on his mind. Later there Is 29:17-24 Ps 27:1,4,13-14 Mt 9:27-31 was a plenary meeting of all the Bishops from a region during which STM 8:00 AM People of the Parish the Pope read a prepared statement. During the pontificate of Pope Saturday, December 7 St. Ambrose, bishop, doctor of the church St. John Paul II there was also a luncheon meeting during which the Is 30:19-21,23-26 Ps 147:1-6 Mt 9:35-10:1,5a,6-8 Pope asked input on particular topics. OLQP 4:30 PM †Dorothy A. Murphy - Ruth Patterson This time it was different. Taking the best of the various STM 4:30 PM †Carol J. Schwartz - Kathy Guarino approaches, has decided to meet with all the bishops of Sunday, December 8 SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT a region—whether in charge of a diocese, an auxiliary bishop, or a Is 11:1-10 Ps 72:1-2,7-8,12-13,17 Rom 15:4-9 Mt 3:1-12 retired bishop—for a two hour period. After a brief statement, he OLQP 9:15 AM †Ann Reinhardt - Family allowed the bishops to bring up matters which confront our local 11:45 AM †Rev. John F. Robbins, CSB - Heffernan churches—immigration, declining Mass attendance, the sex-abuse Family crisis, the need for more vocations, the de-population of the upstate STM 8:00 AM †Frank & Genevieve Palermo - Mary Jane & dioceses and the over-population of the downstate dioceses, etc. The Marty Rimmele Pope asked questions and took part in a dialogue with the bishops. 10:30 AM †Michael & Carol Diodato - Sherylanne The bishops were also required to visit five Vatican offices: Diodato the Office of the Secretary of State, Congregation for Bishops, Congregation for Clergy, and Congregation for the Doctrine of the Sanctuary Lamp Intentions this week are in Memory of: Faith and for the Protection of Minors. They STM Otto Funderburk were also encouraged to visit other Vatican offices according to their OLQP Laura Wetmore interests: Congregation for Divine Worship, Congregation for the Causes of Saints, Congregation for Consecrated Life, Congregation for Catholic Education, for Promoting Integral Human Prayers Requested: Please pray for the individuals who have requested Development, Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life, Pontifical our prayers: Patrick Brennan, Amy Campbell, Mary Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization, Pontifical Jean & Carmine Castellano, Christine Barry Comito, Council for the Promotion of Christian Unity, and Secretariat for Mary Delman, Mary Ann Fischer, Louise Foxenburgh, Patt Communications. In the past, these visits were perfunctory with a Guerrette, Mary Helen Hiller, Kathleen Hurley, Ginger Ierardi, cardinal reading a prepared statement which talked down to the Steven Kistner, Barbara Labroi, Kathleen Lowe, Lourdes May, bishops or even scolded them. Pope Francis has changed all that, Cecile McDonald, Diana McCaulla, Linda McCauley, John reminding these offices that they are not the boss of the bishops but McGinnity, Ed Meagher, Janice Milliman, Dolly Nolan, Dian rather the servant of the bishops. As a result, the bishops found these Oakes, Quinn Oliphant, Bob O’Neill, Phillip Pinto, Marion meetings more helpful, more dialogical, more informative. All in all, Robinson, Penny Rose, Edward Rosenzweig, Angelina it was a very good trip for the bishops, even if it did pour rain every Snyder, Tom & Kathleen Sullivan, Barb Tindale, Phillippa day. Peace to all, Wilson, and Christine Yaeger. Fr. Hart Page Three Parish Community of Our Lady Queen of Peace/St. Thomas More, Rochester, New York
