Its division into three main sections – remedies addressing complaints head to toe (a capite ad calcem), poisons and venoms (antidotes, theriacs, toxicology), and plasters, ointments, and similar “surgical” matters – allows for investigation of Scribonius’ approach to these respective aspects of medicine, the types of remedies and ingredients which form his therapeutic repertoire, and the technical knowledge and practical methods of drug compounding which constitute applied pharmacy in the early Roman Empire. The work’s preface and its index supplement the understanding of the Compositiones as a systematic reference work for treating common and dangerous ailments, based on a medical model with a strong commitment to ethical professional conduct and the tripartite nature of medicine as an inseparable union between pharmacy, surgery, and dietetics. While relatively obscure when compared to the more extensive and famous works of Pliny the Elder, Dioscorides, Celsus, and above all Galen, the material resonated with audiences of different time periods, leading to a varied reception and afterlife which ranges from second hand citations in Galen and extensive reproduction in Marcellus over individual recipes copied in medieval recipe compilations to dissertations by pharmacologists and dentists around the turn of the twentieth century, and include materials as diverse as medieval manuscripts, a Humanist commentary written in prison, a treatise on the pox, a doctoral thesis which is both a defence of Scribonius and of contemporary academic dentistry, and an engraving of the author on a large Theriac container. This thesis approaches these aspects of the Compositiones from two angles: in volume one, the text, its scholarly analysis, and the methodology taken here will be introduced before discussing the different sections and themes of the text – its approach to medicine and professional conduct, its structure and pharmaceutical practice, and its position in contemporary context, compared to the works of Celsus, Pliny the Elder, and Dioscorides. Its reception will also be discussed, with a focus on three late nineteenth and early twentieth century German language works which approach Scribonius from a pharmacological (Felix Rinne, 1892/1896) or dental perspective (Walter Wriedt, Fritz Trilk, 1921) which illustrate engagement of scientists and practitioners with ancient medical texts and medico-historical studies and their importance as part of the legitimisation and identity formation strategies of newly developing academic disciplines such as pharmacology and academic dentistry. Volume two lets the work speak for itself and aims to make Scribonius more accessible to a wider range of audiences by providing an English translation of the Compositiones which reflects the technical and at times challenging nature of the text and its translation into a modern language and attempts to clarify ambiguities, uncertainties, or problems with text or meaning by extensive explanatory annotations and comments, as well as drawing attention to noteworthy elements of medico-historical interest. Langdon NUMBER of ancient sites have been found over the years in the A neighborhood of Vari, an Attic village at the southern end of Mount Hymettos. One site that has recently attracted atten­ tion is the hill of Lathoureza just west of the town (Figure 1). A fortification at its top (elevation 132.5 m.) and a group of structures on a lower spur have been re-examined. 1 The studies of these sites are concerned with specific remains, so they do not mention a later rupestral inscription at the peak. Known for some time, the inscrip­ tion deserves notice, especially since two more inscriptions belonging to the same series may be added. The first inscription to be discovered (2) was found and briefly noted by C. W. J. Eliot. 2 It is a three-line boundary marker cut into the rock at the very peak (PLATE la; Figures 2-3). The lines are oriented 130 degrees west of north and read from south to north. In 1975 two similar horoi were found on the same hill. 3 1 (PLATE lb) is cut into level rock 200 meters distant from 2, near the edge of the cliff line that stretches down northeast from the top. Species of the Asteraceae family and the genus Eupatorium, have high biological potential and are used in folk medicine to treat various diseases. This review article presents the main phytochemical and biological characteristics of the Asteraceae family and the genus Eupatorium s.l., whose antimicrobial activity is promising, especially antibacterial and antifungal activity. The current review was achieved using an organized search of the scientific data published on antimicrobial activity and phytochemical of the species of the genus Eupatorium using various databases, including PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, Scielo, SciFinder and Google Scholar. The species of Eupatorium are rich in terpenes, phytosterols and sesquiterpene lactones, the latter being chemotaxonomic markers of the group, with broad anticancer, antiplasmodial and antimicrobial activity, making them promising for the development of new drugs.

It is listed as a BLM sensitive species and is included on the State of New Mexico list of endangered plant species. Most of the known populations of Brack’s are on lands under Bureau of Land Management (BLM) jurisdiction (about 80%), but it is also present on the Navajo Nation, State of New Mexico Trust Lands, and private property. Portions of the Nacimiento Formation have actively developing oil and gas fields that include the construction of well pads, roads and pipelines that have the potential to significantly negatively impact this species. Yet, the full extent of the species regionally, its habitat requirements, and abundance have not been systematically addressed to support the management of the species. Accordingly, Natural Heritage New Mexico (NHNM) conducted field study in 2015 with two primary objectives: 1) provide a regional assessment of the overall distribution of Sclerocactus cloverae ssp. brackii on the Nacimiento Formation in the context of other closely related Sclerocactus species; and 2 ) describe the potential habitats and relative degree of occupancy by the species within those habitats focusing on the Lybrook area, a major population center for the species and an area of ongoing intensive oil and gas exploration.
