The unit has cross curricular links with science. The story begins in the old Tyrone coalfi elds and Jamie traces the development of our inland waterway system, which was designed to carry local coal to Dublin and Belfast. Some Key Stage 2 pupils show Jamie around the Newry Inland Canal and Ship Canal. We learn about the heyday of the canals and some of the problems that beset them. We learn how the advent of the railways sounded the death-knell of our canals as viable commercial routes. Jamie explores the remains of the old Lagan and Coalisland Canals and fi nds that a section of the Lagan Canal between Sprucefi eld and Moira now lies under the M1 Motorway. We see work in progress at the Island site in Lisburn where an old canal lock is being restored. -

LAGAN WATERWAY HISTORY Navigable waterways Prior to the advent of canals and railways in the 1700s and 1800s, packhorses and horses and carts or packhorse were the main means of moving stuff. Although Ireland has had a good road network since the 1600s, such roads were poorly surfaced and not always well maintained. The loads transported were thus limited by the hauling power of the horses and condition of the roads. Bulky, low-value goods such as coal, building materials and grain were particularly expensive to transport. Railways solved this problem, but only after the development of reliable steam locomotives in the mid-1800s. Before then, rivers were the cheapest way of moving large heavy loads where speed was not essential. Except for their tidal sections however, most rivers were not navigable for any great distance and the size of boats, and thus of the loads carried, was invariably limited by obstructions such as shallows, rapids and weirs. Navigations and canals Navigable waterways are of two types – navigations and canals. Navigations are existing natural watercourses whose navigability has been improved, whereas canals are entirely artificial channels excavated by hand and/or machine. The pros and cons of each type of waterway are as follows: For Against Navigations No major civil engineering works Prone to strong currents in winter and required so relatively cheap. lack of water in summer, both of which may make navigation temporarily impossible. www.WaterProjectsOnline.com Wastewater Treatment & Sewerage Annagher Wastewater Pumping Station upgrade to reduce spills to Coalisland Canal, providing flood protection to the Coalisland catchment and rejuvenating the Coalisland community by Keith Bingham BEng Hons IEng MICE pgrading the Annagher Pumping Station (PS) involved the construction of a new pumping station on the existing site, as well as supporting pipelines in the region of the Annagher coal mine and the Coalisland Canal Uon the outskirts of the town of Coalisland, County Tyrone. Northern Ireland (NI) Water invested £2.5m to rationalise and upgrade the existing wastewater collection and transfer systems within Coalisland. Implementation of the scheme has ensured that NI Water is able to meet its strategic customer-oriented targets, compliance with European Wastewater Treatment Directives and protection of water quality in the Coalisland Canal. Implementation of the scheme has also played its part in the regeneration plans for Coalisland. Alan Godfrey Maps
ALAN GODFREY MAPS Alan Godfrey maps are reprints of Old Ordnance Survey Maps. They are based on either 25" (or 1:2,500) plans, reduced to 15" to the mile, or “Inch to the Mile” maps. As all these maps predate the Second World War, they show the configuration of streets before bomb damage, after which many streets in Belfast were lost. Each map includes a history of the area, and some include extracts from contemporary directories. Co. Antrim Co. Antrim Sheet 32.16 Ballymena 1903 This very detailed map covers much of Ballymena, including the town centre. Coverage stretches from the station eastwards to the Braid River, and from the Union Workhouse southwards to Harryville Bridge. Note that most of Harryville is off the map. The map covers the town centre with houses and other buildings all neatly delineated; The Castle, Braid Water Mills, station including narrow gauge line, Market Place, Fair Green, Town Parks area, Recreation Ground, Court House, Adair Arms Hotel, weaving factory, McClurkanstown, St Patrick's church, Kintullagh House, District Model School, People's Park, cottage hospital etc. A list of private inhabitants from a contemporary directory is included. Co. Antrim Sheet 40.04 Larne 1903 This very detailed map covers the important harbour town of Larne. Most of the town is covered on this busy map and major features include the Harbour railway station and the two town stations. Other features include the northern part of Inver (around the stations), Inver Mill, Market Place, Invermore, Bleach & Dye Works, Pound Street, Main Street, Union Workhouse, McGarel Buildings, Linen Weaving Factory, Aluminium Works, Curran House, Olderfleet Hotel, Chaine Monument, Drumalis (or Drumaliss) and much more. -

HISTORIC ENVIRONMENT DIVISION Historic Monuments of Northern Ireland Scheduled Historic Monuments 1st April 2016 NORTHERN IRELAND ENVIRONMENT AGENCY DEPARTMENT OF THE ENVIRONMENT HISTORIC MONUMENTS OF NORTHERN IRELAND Historic Environment Division identifies, protects, records, investigates and presents Northern Ireland's heritage of archaeological and historic sites and monuments. The Department has statutory responsibility for the sites and monuments in this list which are protected under Article 3 of the Historic Monuments and Archaeological Objects (NI) Order 1995. They are and are listed in alphabetical order of townland name within each county. The Schedule of Historic Monuments at April 2016 This schedule is compiled and maintained by the Department and is available for public consultation at the Monuments and Buildings Record, Waterman House, 5-33 Hill Street, Belfast BT1 2LA. Additions and amendments are made throughout each year and this list supersedes all previously issued lists. To date there are 1,977 scheduled historic monuments. It is an offence to damage or alter a scheduled site in any way. No works should be planned or undertaken at the sites listed here without first consulting with Historic Environment Division and obtaining any necessary Scheduled Monument Consent. The unique reference number for each site is in the last column of each entry and should be quoted in all correspondence. Where sites are State Care and also have a scheduled area they are demarcated with an asterisk in this list The work of scheduling is ongoing, and the fact that a site is not in this list does not diminish its unique archaeological importance. The Northern Ireland Sites and Monuments Record (NISMR) has information on some 16,656 sites of which this scheduled list is about 12% at present. -
