I. Introduction

The report that follows provides the University community with a summary of Seton Hall’s 2013 baccalaureate graduates’ career statuses (employment and graduate school). The survey was administered in May at cap-and-gown pick-up, one week prior to graduation. A six month post-graduation follow up survey was administered in November 2013. In addition, Stillman students were surveyed three months post-graduation, in August 2013. (Prior to 2012, the six month follow-up survey was conducted every three years.)

Data analysis is based on 1,062 baccalaureates (the total number who graduated in December 2012, May 2013 and August 2013 as reported by the Office of Enrollment Services). A total of 839 or 79% of the 2013 baccalaureates responded to the survey administered in May at cap-and-gown pick-up.

During the month of November, Career Center staff attempted to contact 465 baccalaureates who indicated in May (and August, for Stillman graduates) that they had not yet accepted career-related professional employment (including post-baccalaureate service, military service, or planned to start their own business), or had not yet been accepted to graduate school. Career Center staff successfully reached 306 alumni during the six-month post-graduation phone survey, or 66% of the attempted calls. Data collected during the November follow-up phone survey has been combined with the May 2013 and August 2013 (for Stillman alumni) information, resulting in “known career status” information on 680 of the 1,062 baccalaureates, resulting in a 64% response rate.

Response rate per college after six-months, based on data provided by the Office of Enrollment Services: • College of Arts and Sciences – 316/407 or 78% response rate • Stillman School of Business - 155/171 or 91% response rate • School of Diplomacy and International Relations – 40/51 or 78% response rate • College of Education and Human Services – 56/58 or 97% response rate • College of Nursing – 99/134 or 74% response rate • School of Theology - 14/18 or 78% response rate

Career status information on “known status” of 680 of the 2013 baccalaureates (2012 comparative data provided in parentheses):  59%* had accepted employment in a career related position (55%)  11% had interviewed and were awaiting a career-related offer (11%)  2% had not yet started the career search process (1%)  1% were employed in a part-time non-career related position (N/A)  1% were continuing/beginning a new internship (N/A)  24% had applied, been accepted, and intended to enroll in a graduate program (22%)  2% had applied to a graduate program and were awaiting acceptance (3%)  1% intended to apply to a graduate program, but had not started the process (1%)  1% had not pursued graduate school or a career-related position (1%)  84% overall employment rate (84%) *Includes post-baccalaureate service, military service, missionary activities and students starting their own business; N/A = No comparative data available

Note 1: Not all respondents provided valid responses for each question; therefore, the data analysis, figures, and percentages provided in this report are based upon the number of valid responses for each variable. Note 2: Whenever possible, comparison data has been provided for the Class of 2012 and preceding classes of graduates for the purpose of analyzing trends over time. Note 3: Some academic majors were not included in this report because there were no respondents. Note 4: The Career Center acknowledges that Economics majors may graduate with Bachelors of Arts or Bachelors of Sciences degrees. Therefore, throughout this report information regarding Economics majors has been clearly delineated to one of the two classifications. Note 5: Business Administration was identified by one Stillman respondent. B.A./B.A. includes students who pursue an interdisciplinary program within the Stillman School of Business. The Career Center would like to recognize Alexandra Stratyner, M.A., and Donjae Catanzariti, M.S., graduate career assistants and students in the Counseling Psychology Ph.D. program, for their time and dedication to the data analysis and construction of this report. 5

II. Summary of Tables

Table One – Employment Rate Table One provides employment rates across all colleges/schools. Employment rate is defined as percentage of “active” students pursuing employment, calculated by those employed in a career-related position, post- baccalaureate service, military service, those starting their own business, and those applying and/or interviewing for a career-related professional position. Comparative data for the 2012 and 2009 baccalaureate graduates is also included.

Table Two – Career Status of Respondents by College and Major Table Two provides information about the career status of respondents, as reported upon graduation in May 2013 and November 2013 (and August 2013 for Stillman graduates), with a breakdown by both college and primary academic major. Comparative data for the 2012 graduating class, as reported in November 2012, is provided in parentheses.

Table Three – Salary Table Three provides starting salaries of Seton Hall University’s baccalaureates as compared to previous years. A total of 209 data points were reported during both the May and November survey administrations. The overall average starting salary for all Seton Hall baccalaureates was $43,074. The College of Nursing reported the highest starting salary, with an average of $49,605, followed by the Stillman School of Business, with an average of $47,397. (See Appendix A for a listing of hiring employers with a breakdown by college and academic major.)

Table Four – Graduate School Acceptance by College and Major Table Four provides information on those respondents who had been accepted to graduate school or were awaiting graduate school acceptance as of November 2013. A total of 166 or 97% of the respondents who had applied to graduate school had been accepted. (See Appendix B for a listing of graduate schools with a breakdown by college and academic major.)
